In Asia, "Gentlemen & Ladies!" is said. I thought they're right. Their reasons are they greet people in order of the Creation & suppress the females, because they're afraid of Eve's repetition. So again, thanks for clarifying about the images serving as a reminder for you. Though I don't agree with that particular practice, it is still interesting to learn about other people's beliefs and what is behind those beliefs. In the past I had seen Catholics kneeling before statues and praying and was confused about it. Still am. But to each his own.

It also says In James 5:16 "Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." I don't see any where that instructs us to appeal to Mary or any dead Christians. But again, I don't want to be argumentative. I can only go on my understanding of the Gospel, and if we have different understandings, it does not mean that we are against one another. We just believe differently.

O well, it is just a difference in how we believe. I believe that the dead saints are in heaven praying for us. They are the cloud of witnesses mentioned in Heb 12:1. But I don't believe we need to appeal to them for help. As for laying of hands and praying for one another, that is part of what the scripture tells us to do. 1 tim 4:14 tells us "Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery."

So again I sorry, it was really partially due to the fact that I was curious about some of the things Catholics believe that I don't particularly agree with and which I find no basis for in the Bible. But as a Christian, I am to love and pray for all people and have the same hope and faith that Christ had for me and everyone else - that we come to know Him, to follow Him and to become like Him. To my knowledge, God's Word speaks against graven images. "I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images." (which are statues) Isaiah 42:8 and there are many other versus against graven images in the Bible. I am not trying to attack you or anything.I really do apologize if I came off as incendiary, mean, or anything of the sort. It is really not my place to judge ANYONE, that is God's task and one that I would never want that job.

Well, Mary does not have the power to help you in any way from what I read in the bible. However, Thank you for that very candid reply. I always wondered about that because many times when I talk with Catholics or see them on their religious television channels and things, they talk more about Mary than about Jesus and I just found that kind of strange. I also went to the wedding of a friend of mine and found some of the things they did to be strange. Like going to the shrine of the Holy Family.

As far as the canon, catholics also made decisions on which writings to include in the bible. there were many writings by people who were frauds and were determined inauthentic by the early church and were therefore not included in the cannon. For you to just keep saying Protestants arbitrarily remove books from the bible is just ridiculous. If anyone ever did do so wrongly, God will judge them accordingly. It has nothing to do with me. God will lead me according to His ways.

Really, I was just asking a legitimate question. I just have never understood why Catholics place Mary where they place. The bible just does not place her in a position to deliver us from our sins. And obviously I have sinned. I am a sinner. All people are sinners and have sinned. Only Jesus has never sinned, that is why He can save us. I actually like all of the Ave Maria songs. Caccini, Schubert, and the Bach/Gounod. I like their melodies and as a musician I enjoy playing them and listening to them as much as any of the secular classical pieces I like. I just don't understand why Catholics hold Mary so high, as if she can save them when she cannot. Only Jesus Christ has the power to save.

Catholics hold Mary so highly because she truly was the mother of God. As such they ask Mary to intercede on their behalf in the probability that as a son loves his mother He would not refuse her requests. Also Christ can only be pleased when we honour(not worship) His beloved mother. Hope that explains the Catholic position.

Praying to statues of mary is like praying to an idol, which the bible expressly tell us not to do. To attain salvation, we must go the way that Jesus went and no longer be servants to sin.
