  • For what he's doing that tone is awesome. These are fun little jams you do, i wouldn't mind seeing a couple in a more rock context than blues. Either way, they are killer for practicing.

  • Dave!! The tone was so much better this week!!! But I can hear the potential in your tone. Do you keep your guitar volume down a lot? I see the knobs are all at 12o'clock. So you have a lot of cut and not a lot of treble to begin with. It's ok to have some treble.

  • This type of thinking absolutely CHANGES EVERYTHING in terms of how you play and think. I am guilty of not doing it too. But I KNOW HOW IT MUST WORK. It works even for playing over chords that share a scale but works for phrasing because you know what notes to emphasize. Thanks for the wake up Dave!

  • Can anyone tell me which of the I IV and V (7th) chords are better suited to playing major or minor over? Great video as always Dave!

    Hey, man. Well, since in this case all the chords are dominant 7th chords and dominant 7th chords have a major 3rd, I guess major. But it depends what you mean, because you couldn't play major SCALES over them. You could think of it as playing mixolydian modes starting from the root of each chord over each respective chord, but I think that the recommendation in the video is to start from A pentatonic/blues scale and then add the chord tones unique to each chord in the progression.

  • @Kaaru you can't play major scales over a I, IV, V? You need to listen to Clapton more. The master of mixing major and minor tonalities.

  • @TheSammyreynolds major pentatonic is not the same as a major scale. two notes lacking. yeah, Clapton played a lot of major and minor pentatonics over dominant chords. but try to play major scale on a dominant seventh chord and you create one of the worst sounding tensions possible - playing natural seventh on a dominant chord.

    after all Wes Montgomery did it. but i doubt you will throw tritone substituted II-V's on a 3 chord blues.

  • @Kaaru I don't think you really understood my question. I wasn't necessarily talking about the 7th chord, just any blues progression, but they are mostly 7th chords. I know you can't play major over a minor chord progression, but you can play both major and minor over a major chord progression (you know, à la BB King, Clapton, Hendrix, etc).

    I was just wondered, when you are mixing major and minor, which tonality sounds better over which chord (the I, the IV or the V)...

  • @D3adk3nny13 scales are the shapes that you play in a certain key to make riffs. you learn the scales, create different patterns as you learn how to improvise, which is just that and over time you will get you own riffs and solos
