But seriously folks, as y'all watching this: You just got to give plenty of credits to Phil Collins for contributing so much of his drumming effort to the rock n roll world...Band Aid, Genesis, and a whole bunch of other recordings!!!
@gg41r I doubt that. That must just be someone trying to create and spread a rumour.
But this concert was during a period when Robert Plant rather disliked Stairway to Heaven. Later, having greater perspective, he changed his mind again. But here, he performs it just because it's expected of the band. Jimmy, though, always liked Stairway.
Yes only the three of them , we were missing Bonham due to unforseen circumstances but I'm sure everyone remembered him that day, along with all the other great legends of Rock. Seligor x

@normy11yt I agree the two drums sounded muddled. Should have been just one drum, Phil or the other guy. This was 30-35% Plant, you could put it down to rustiness I suppose.
@diego59x He did. Look at the video again - Page actually cues him to come in at that point, which is roughly the same point he comes in in the original.
@magicbus144 ....WELL..lol...!!!....I'm a recovering heroin addict....I did it because

I remember being 14,got permission to watch Live Aid,dragging a big tv in my bedroom so others could sleep. Me with a blanket in a chair recording it on cassette, still have them. Sometimes I look in the book & think back & now It's amazing to see it again!
How time flies btw... nowadays my 19 yo son,a guitarist, plays this song on stage with his band or alone 'cause it's 1 of his favorite songs. And I think it's great that the new generation of musicians respect these guys & see them as examples!
I really don't know why people hated this performance, honestly, after all those years they got back together quick to play a charity concert, so... thanks zep!

bloody shame, it wasnt there best performance but you have to remember they were missing the key member bono on drums., colins was good in his own bad genisus.
You all have to remember this was for a cause, lot of bands , not there sound system. Huge venue, oh ya and Jimmy still on smack. At least they were there!!
he is more than extra ordinary, lucky these people, who attended his concerts, i got birth in 90 and missed these great musicians, LED ZEPPELIN forever !!
Right Around 6:01, Plant admitted he had a mini breakdown. He said "Singing the song without Bonzo there, just felt empty. It wasn't right. Then I had to sing The Piper's Calling You To Join Him, and that threw me a curve ball. I recovered, but it was not the same. Ya know what I mean?"
Well I can say, I don't care if this performance was bad (which it was, but could have been worse) it would still have been a mind blower to be there to see them!
I'm no Phil Collins fan, but JP has a reputation for blaming others when he sounds off, usually roadies and guitar techs. How he could pin this on Collins is ridiculous
this was undeniably a subpar performance, but only by led zep's godly standards. for mortals, a performance like this would be the pinnacle of their life. even when led zep "sucked" they rocked
A great band, a classic of a song, but the performance was subpar--additionally, the sound and video are more like a home-movie quality--so this perhaps adds to the feeling of a "tribute band" sound. I'm a huge u2 fan, and the same comments can be found on many of their live performances-but u2 has figured out that SOUND QUALITY on the big stage is a huge factor-and they heavily invest in good sound equipment. Finally, let's be honest, it is a gift to sound as good live-Queen outdid themselves.
I'm gonna be honest here and say if they would have asked Simon Phillips to drum and be the only drummer for this song they would have done better at least as far as the drumset is concerned. Not saying that Tony Thompson or Phil Collins are bad drummers they just don't have what it takes to drum for this song. I saw film of the Concert for ARMS and Simon did a great job at drumming for this song and it was just Jimmy Page by himself playing the song instrumentally too.
People hate on this performance too much because it's not as good as Zep USED to be. It's still a pretty phenomenal live performance by practically any standard. The fact that this is "trash" for Zeppelin is remarkable.
First off, let me say that Phil is a BRILLIANT drumming genius, so with that in mind, of course I"m going to defend him. He would have nailed this entire performance with Zeppelin note for note, but unfortunately, the late, great Tony Thompson is to blame here for the tempo problems. He was racing too much while Phil did what he could to keep it Bonham style. I still loved it & this stage is full of people who could do no wrong, but Tony played too fast while Phil kept the backbeat intact.
But seriously folks, as y'all watching this: You just got to give plenty of credits to Phil Collins for contributing so much of his drumming effort to the rock n roll world...Band Aid, Genesis, and a whole bunch of other recordings!!!

the sound of the bass is horrible... is he poppin' n' slapping to STAIRWAY?!?
all that chorus on jimmy's guitar - another victim of the 80's. *sigh*.
and for the record, plant screws up more than phil.

Well I can say, I don't care if this performance was bad (which it was, but could have been worse) it would still have been a mind blower to be there to see them!
Toydude1984 6 months ago
I'm no Phil Collins fan, but JP has a reputation for blaming others when he sounds off, usually roadies and guitar techs. How he could pin this on Collins is ridiculous
seivad9 6 months ago
The amount of suckage this performance exhibits is inversely proportional to the amount of awesomeness bonham could have added if he had been present
0000AllFitness0000 6 months ago
this was undeniably a subpar performance, but only by led zep's godly standards. for mortals, a performance like this would be the pinnacle of their life. even when led zep "sucked" they rocked

Does anybody remember Laughter?!....
birdofprey51 8 months ago
it's live, it's not going to be the same as the studio recording, I think it sounds great, and they are in 80's styles because it's the 80's.
I think he should drop the remember laughter bit, now that has gotten old for me.

On balance, Rolf Harris probably did it better.

Horrible solo, horrible overall performance.

Great song, but the hair and clothes are too '80s.
sabiab 8 months ago
@sabiab Might be something to do with it being sung in 1985. The song is from 1971.
You should listen the original...

People hate on this performance too much because it's not as good as Zep USED to be. It's still a pretty phenomenal live performance by practically any standard. The fact that this is "trash" for Zeppelin is remarkable.
JohnnyShred612 8 months ago
First off, let me say that Phil is a BRILLIANT drumming genius, so with that in mind, of course I"m going to defend him. He would have nailed this entire performance with Zeppelin note for note, but unfortunately, the late, great Tony Thompson is to blame here for the tempo problems. He was racing too much while Phil did what he could to keep it Bonham style. I still loved it & this stage is full of people who could do no wrong, but Tony played too fast while Phil kept the backbeat intact.
