Well great tell your Uncle thanks for messing things up. The europeans really messed up our island and our cultural. Not something I would be so proud of if I was you. Not your fault but you might what to read up on your history before broadcasting something like that.
Kaelani8 do YOU even know the history of this island? Your island and culture were dead from poverty and civil wars long before the europeans got there. Rupert grats on being related to the guy that brought the knowledge and culture of this island to the rest of the world
It doesn't matter if he doesn't know. What he said was along the lines of the truth. It's a big clash of cultures here in New Zealand. Us Polynesians have alot of conflicting values with western culture, it has caused a lower standard of living for the majority of us here. However it is close-minded for blame to be put on westerners today for the mistakes of there ancestors - New Zealand, Hawaii, Samoa not Easter Island.
Well Paul (mootaku), you don't seem to be of Polynesian descent? Since you're actually thinking that the Europeans brought knowledge of our culture to the rest of the world? It doesn't seem you know too much history yourself. I'm not putting this guy down for being related to "first euro landing on the island."
I am a wahine, not kane. I have and will never be closed minded. In order for us not to repeat past mistakes we must make way and understand what our ancestors have done or not done to make way for our future, and in our culture.
." I simply am stating that with in current affairs as well as history, that bragging about being related to a much disliked history of people in the past as well as with in current affairs, that's nothing to brag about. But since you want to continue this conversation and add your two cents, let's talk a little history, although Easter Island is not my island per-say; figure that between 1722 and 1774 this so called civil war had taken place, history show that when the Dutch (European)
explorers came to the island the island was peaceful, by the time Captain Cook arrived in 1774 the island was pretty much destroyed. From the Polynesian point of view, why would the people have destroyed their own island or themselves, when it was against their traditional values to do so? There are only two choices, either there was a civil war caused by the Europeans against the Polynesians as history has stated on many occasions of genocides on many islands NOT just Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
or maybe Paul, maybe there was a natural disaster that destroyed the populations and eco system of this Island before Captain Cook arrived. Paul what I do know is that Europeans, started this war, symbolically or not it continues. The only difference between the Native American Indians, the Polynesians, and the Africans is that the Native American Indians and the Polynesians are still fighting for their land and still holding on to their own of what is left,
where as most African countries have allowed theme selves to become colonized and owned by these other Euro Countries except for Ethiopia for one who refuses to be led down that path. The only reason Hawai'i joined the union of the states was due to the war between Japan and the US at that time, trying to protect their land and culture of what was left from the invasions of Europeans and the US., most currently on sacred land.

And you should never assume things before posting inflammatory comments.
Im very conversant with the facts and the history
of Rapanui...and am more than aware of the people killed, diseases left..and the cutlture disrupted.
However..I am not my ancestor...and you are not
yours. And I certainly dont have to apologise for anything anyone else has done ...good luck with that chip :-)

I am not simply just speaking on Rapa Nui, but for our Polynesian heritage and culture touched and un-touched.
