The original drawings of him by ditko showed him as being rather chubby and out of shape, his tentacles make him a menace tough. He was a physicist and nuclear engineer, not a superpowered thug.

In the 90s cartoon, I believe "the big man" this show refers to was a small time crook or maybe a big name crook that was childhood friends with Robby. I won't say who so I don't spoil it, but his real name does come up later in this show.

Also Spidey didn't get the ability to shoot webbing form the spider, he has these web slingers attacked to his wrists hidden under the costume's wrists.

In the movie they ditched the latter idea and in turn allowed him to shoot webbing from his wrists just like that.
