  • I agree with Brownpride480'scomments, except that I think at his height and weight he couldn't compete with today's top heavyweights (compared with the heavyweight's relatively smaller size back then), and the advanced training and nutrition they have available now How would he fare against Ali, Joe Frazier, Joe Louis, or Marciano? But he could dominate the middleweight/super-middleweight divisions today, maybe even light heavyweight. One of the classic greats of all time.

  • @dal6828 yeah but when it comes to Heavyweights, I wasn't really trying to exaggerate but I mean the undisciplined and fat heavyweights like Chris Arreola or blown up Light Heavyweights like Tomasz Adamek losing badly to Langford but Langford would still lose to the the Klitschko brothers not only because of size advantage but because the two brothers have underrated skills.

  • I believe Langford would of killed many boxers if he were fighting right now in the Mayweather-Pacquiao era that's how great and underrated this boxer is. Too bad he was never able to win a title from any weight classes because of his race and the era he was in. Hell I think he would of even beat today's heavyweights too regardless of his size but he's one of the toughest small boxers along with Dwight Muhammad Qawi IMO.

  • Its amazing that he was a heavyweight and only 5`6...

  • OMG - @ "It is amazing how many people really appreciated my grandfather's boxing style" - Jesus Christ you people believe anything.

  • Jack Johnson said himself he would not want to fight Langford, once did in the ring and once in a bar room cellar, said both times that Langford was unlike any fighter he himself faced, what a timeless fighter, what grace, power, skill. OOOhhhh how i wish i lived then. but hey i wouldnt have all this old time footage to marvel at. god bless.

  • Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the first fight clip is his fight against Bill Lang...1911.

  • i read[maybe here]a thing about this mans record, you see he fought an amazing number of fights with THE SAME FIGHTERS.I dont have the data in front of me but it seems like he had 50 or 60 fights with 5 guys, maybe even more fights.the other thing i noticed is that the majority of his fights were in Boston Ma..he didnt get on the road as many boxers did.i wonder how it feels to fight the same man 10,12,13 times?i have no idea how common this was back then?

  • the fought without good gloves?

  • Sam was amazing boxer. I have him 4 in my h/w list. A lot of boxers would be in serious trouble against Sam.

  • @danceswithwolvesful - Amazing buddy! I ranked Langford 2 in my Top Ten Heavyweights of all time and 4 in my top ten P4P!

  • Fucking baddest man to never win a title. I dunno if he could have taken down Sullivan, but other than him Langford could have beaten any other gloved boxer. Prime vs prime and Langford might kill your favorite. I love this old bastard!

  • I like the music at the beginning !! lol very nice ol' good days

  • I notice that Langford loved to cut off the ring, with his guard down! As great of a fighter he was, I wonder whether a Larry Holmes, Buster Douglas-style left jab would've neutralized his fighting style!

  • Don´t let the poor quality of the old films mislead You. Sam could have knocked all of the havyweight-champs today out! No matter how big they are.

And think of that: Sam had great athletic looks. Is there really anyone out there who thinks let´s say the K-Brothers have their bodies styled without support form the Pharmacie? Without growth-hormons or other doping-medicine they are litterally nothing!

  • Even not much more than a middleweight he fought all and every heavyweight who made the mistake to accept a bout. After the great Jack Johnson had fought him, Jack said Sam was the greatest fighter who ever put on gloves and he would never fight Sam again, ´cause Langford was the hardest hitter he ever knew.

Sam fought from welter to heavy more than 350 official bouts! Can You imagine the new Champs fight half as much?

  • how can people judge these old fighters when the footage is almost impossible to see?

  • How did one of the most feared men to ever step in the ring lose almost 50 fights? I know at one point in his career he was almost completely blind, but did ever throw fights?

  • He went blind after his career, can't see him throwing any fights but can't be sure unless you watch all his fights :P, next to impossible to see all 314 now though.

  • Wtf? This is like the black and white version of Tom & Jerry

  • @SlimDavy1337 - Wtf are you watching this for anyway? youre not a boxing fan so gtfo. dont write stupid comments.

  • That is quite funny, but....... FUCK YOU

  • whats the point in this video? can't see a thing anyway!

  • lol sounds like sam got around.

  • I am proud to be his great grand daughter. I get my incredible strength from Sam (on my dad's side) and my mom. I have overcome more tragedies and obstacles than the average person could imagine, yet nothing keeps me down. I know this inner strength comes from GOD first, and the blood of my relatives second.

  • That is interesting that you are related to Sam Langford. One of the best atheletes ever and a man who was humble.

  • nicely stated! best of luck to you Charmaine!

  • 45 ROUNDS? These, pansy, whimpy fighters of today, can barely last 12, without panting like dogs.

  • what is that assertion based on?

  • I rate langford up there with Ali, Johnson, Jeffries, Dempsey and Marciano

  • Hey Killpolitics..remember me..we sure miss you on the rocky marciano sites..

  • I too am a descendant of Sam Langford.

My Grandmother Bernice Langford was Mr Sam's Great niece.

It's amazing how small this world is once you start exploring it.

  • he had so many fights

  • im related to sam langford TOOO!!!!!

    hi family!!!

  • Dempsey was afraid of Sam Langford & took pains to avoid Sam.SamLangford was for a time the uncrowned heavyweight champion of the world.Had Dempsey given him a shot it would have been official, boxing historians know this>God Bless You Sam Langford.

  • Sam Langford is my great great Uncle. I had no idea old footage of him existed. This is amazing.

  • Sam was a HUGE puncher being amongst the very chosen (such as Saddler and Moore) few to get 100+ kayos in his career. Even Dempsey admitted: "Sam probably would have knocked me out!" RIP Sam Langford

  • whats the name of the band who's playing that song??

  • this is my great great uncle

  • who`s your uncle?? langford??? are you serious?

    how cool is that

  • yes langford. this is true. its pretty cool.

  • Hi ashl905, may I ask who your parents are because Sam Langford is my great great Uncle too.

  • yeah, thats really information i would give out on youtube.

  • is there proof???

  • Sam Langford's family line cannot be traced so all these "uncle" claims are uh, nutst.

    They are funny bunnyz.

  • actually it can be. where did you get the idea that it cant be traced?

  • Well, ash, in Sam's case as in the cases of many other Northern Black-Americans, the records just are not available as they are in the former slave states.

  • You have GOT to be kidding. My father is Sam's grandson. Sam is my great grandfather. Why is it so hard to believe that famous people have "ordinary joe" relatives, who are not famous. True, a lot of people claim to be related to famous people, but in this instance, I am truly the great grand daughter of this man. If you are a Langford who is related to Sam, PLEASE email me. I would love to get to know more of my fathers side of the family.

    Thanks,

    Charmaine

  • wow, you must be proud. Sam Langford was a great fighter..with such a sad story

  • Sam Langford was a real credit to the human race! you have some great blood flowing through those veins. Arguably the greatest fighter that ever lived!

  • I would say he was without a doubt the greatest fighter ever p4p. I know Greb and Robinson are highly regarded, but neither would last 15 rounds with Langford in there peaks. Other than Johnson, he was the 2nd bets fighter in the heavyweight division for 6 years and was a light-heavy. I believe from 1905 to 1915, he was the best fighter under 175 lbs period.

  • It is amazing how many people really appreciated my grandfather's boxing style. My father and half brother are/were both boxers as well. Ironically I don't like boxing at all LOL. Maybe because I am a female, but thanks to all who leave the nice comments. For the skeptics who leave somments about me NOT being related to him, well, it doesn't bother me, because I know the truth.

  • @charmaine118 did you know him ? did u have the chance to meet him before he died ? Maybe you dont get it fully but for boxing fans he's such a legend !

  • @charmaine118 Sam Langford my favorite fighter

  • You are totally right on that statement. Even the great Jack Dempsey said that Sam Langford would have probably knocked me out!!!

  • hes my sister too

  • I'm not 100 percent certain about this, but there is a chance the first bit of footage is from Langford's fight against Ian Hague, the English heavyweight champ, in London in 1909.

I did a search and apparently film of that fight does exist. Also have seen a still photo of Langford from that fight that looks like it could match up.

Don't know for sure. Just a theory.

  • Great stuff. Thanks for posting. It's a shame the footage is so degraded; it looks like it's been kept in a damp cupboard for seventy years. I really wish these old fights had been preserved with a little more dignity.

  • Man I wish that also. But much like the majority of silent films in general, they are either all gone or in bad shape. Nostalgia was not an honored in those days of early film. Even with the hand powered/fast projection, you can still see the subtlties and great power and skill the "Terror" had. Sam is the man!

  • thanks man
