There are no more great writers, great actors who are manly without being psychos, or great actresses. Hollywood is a cesspool now. You will not see anymore great movies like this one ever again. It is a shame.
This film was on at our local cinema in the good old days when they used to show two films, and it was on with Bruce lee`s Enter the Dragon. They never cleared the cinema at the end of the film so me and my mate went on the afternoon and watched both films twice! They dont make em like this anymore!!
netflix actually describes this movie as "zany and irreverent" in their catalogue.I gaurantee you the guy that wrote that discription is an obama supporter.
An amazing film. Underrated, beautifully shot, amazing rapport, and one of my fave Eastwoods. Its like a 20th century western set in (then) modern times. Its sad such an exhuberant, full of life character like Lightfoot dies because of Leary but also in a way because of Thunderbolt..... But its also about the loss of the American Dream and moreover, loneliness (both the title characters). I'd like to think TB buried LFs body nearby, and after a while, moved on-he always would.....
Hey kid you dont look so good......ermmm i believe your right, classic film watched this many years ago and seen it many times since, that George Kennedy was a right b**tard, my video cassette was all worn at the bit when Bridges was doing that womens garden the bit she came to the window :)
Eastwood took a heck of a long time to realize something was wrong with him. What gave away the fact that he didn't look too well? Did it have anything to do with the fact that he looked like he was having a stroke? Somewhere in a dictionary they have a picture of Thunderbolt next to the word "UNDERSTATEMENT"
My all-time favorite movie, period. Locations, cinematography, story, and especially characters, from Eastwood and Bridges down to scene-stealers like the kid that tells Red and Goody that their ice cream company's pistachio sucks.
This is a classic, they don't make em' like this. But I remembered the ending differently, still a good ending. God does Jeff Bridges look so young! Great death scene.
@hotrodnindeynine eh i think red hit him in the head with a handgun sometime after the robbery...i think he died of brain swelling due to the blow to the head...albeit delayed....
@kidstl Its from the hell of a beating Red gives Lightfoot toward the end before Red tried to take the loot and dies in the store. I'm not surprised the boy dies, however, remember the bit when Red punches Lightfoot in the belly? Maybe hes ill already, or hes not a fighter, he got so winded by the belly punch...its implied. The ends very sad as the boy wanted a Father figure, or big brother and Thunderbolt knows the boy essentially died due to him knowing Red.
@TheMasterNo6 yeah,TB knows he got the kid killed and he feels bad about it but he also knows he just doubled his loot. The genius of eastwoods acting here is that you're not sure which is which.
@rw5791 No, I got the feeling he felt far sadder and guilty Lightfoot died because of him-yes, he got all the loot in the end but its a bitter sweet victory, thats why he stops smoking and breaks the cigar-symbolic of no 'celebration' as Lightfoot put it when he gave it to him to smoke: 'saved them for a celebration'...Thuderbolt was a drifter, lost and a criminal but at heart he was a good person so the certainty is he's far sadder when LF dies-because of him.
@TheMasterNo6 your view of the ending is too sappy and sentimental. If TB was really emotionally involved he would have been in a panic as LF was dying. What TB is really sad about is that a lifetime of crime has left him unable to feel anything.Yes,he breaks the cigar but he still drives off in the caddie filled with loot and he's still gonna spend it.
listen to the song,man..................."where does a fool go when there's no one left to listen".
this movie is so moving.i especially like the song "where do I go from here" in the beginning and in the end of the movie.this movie really hits a nerve with me.Jeff Bridges performance was unbelieveable.especially the last scene.the ending scene in this film has got to be one of the greatest endings I've ever seen (although sad,but it makes you think).rip Lightfoot.
Man the first time I saw this I felt like Jeff Bridges really, literally died....it felt so terrible, and sad... :( what a great movie and acting......!
Clint's spaghetti westerns, Dirty Harry are of course what he best known for and are classics in their own right, but in my opinion, this was his finest film. Great story, high caliber acting and ending.
Bridges was superb in this movie, doesnt matter how many times you watch it,you always want it to end differently....michael ciminos other great film is The Deer hunter.
Great movie, haven't seen it in years, I'm gonna get it on DVD. I like how with all that money Clint buys a new Cadillac but still has the same cloths.
another classic film from my childhood in the 70's , these films stay with you throughout your life unlike a lot of todays movies . its arguably eastwood and bridges finest film .
personally i think the downbeat ending of the film was the correct choice .
@alcoholicbasketcase As personable & outgoing as Lightfoot was,he did die by the very sword he had lived by.They let us,the viewers draw our own conclusions about Thunderbolt & what he might have done with Lighfoot's body.
@landrykkb I like to think he buried Lightfoot nearby after driving a while longer, he wouldn't have dumped him by the road. Stayed by the grave for a bit and then drove on, Thunderbolt probably carried on drifting, maybe not in crime but drifitng - he said it himself, 'your 10 years too late kid' and Lightfoot says something like 'your one lost dude'. The song at the end is essentially about Thunderbolt really....'where do I go from here?'....
Very good movie. I was about 16 yrs. old when I first saw this movie and the ending kinda almost brought tears to the ole eyes. The song is by Paul Williams "Life goes on".
I stole/lifted/borrowed this information from a different video comment by K24skin (shhh don't tell him....ok!) .
i first saw this film when I was 18 - many years ago now, and I fell in love with Jeff Bridges. Sad ending! I'm glad he's still making movies and still handsome :)
You know, Bridges, I think, really made it to the forefront with 'Starman' (1984). He had such a fine performance in that movie. From there, he really started to turn the producers heads...

why does he just suddenly die out of no where? i guess when he got kicked all those times it knocked something loose in his head. probably had a stroke or an aneurysm or something.
Great but touching ending. I always thought what would Thunderbolt have done with Lightfoot's body after driving away? Bury him in the mountains?? Also, Paul William's song is PERFECT.
Clint never got any respect for these films he acted in, i.e. Eiger Sanction, Thunderbolt, etc. This one was a classic..Bridges did get a Best Supporting Actor nom...great scenes in Montana, Idaho...the steam boat, the highway ending. Clint vowed never to work with UA again because he felt they didn't promote enough and he was right. I just hope the younger generation gets to see these.
I saw TB&LF for the first time on Hulu, and thought it was a really good buddy flick--the kind they don't make, like they used to. Hollywood should let bygones be bygones and give Cimino another shot. Almost 3 decades later, and they still haven't forgiven him for Heaven's Gate.

The nature of freedom and loneliness. Youth vs age. The American dream - inverted (criminal as hero). I can talk about it forever. It's the kind of movie that sticks with you. It is an unappreciated masterpiece.
Very good. Yep, I reckon it was ol' George kicking him in the head.

In college, everything has to have a friggin homosexual subtext when you are analyzing movies, stories, etc. in class.
Yeah, he died because of an cerebral hemorrhage caused by Leary beat him up and kicks em several times to his head, this is the only logical explanation I have.
I love this movie, one of my all time fav´s.
I like that Paul Williams song at the end....IMHO he sung it better than Elvis did ;)
He didn't die from a broken neck idiot, he died from some kind of brain damage like a Cerebral Hemorrhage as "syrett76" stated, caused by Red Leary kicking him multiple times on the side of his head. This is a great example of the acting talent of Jeff Bridges, it was awesome the way the left side of his face looked like he had a stroke and it affected his speach. He was nominated for an oscar as Best Supporting Actor 1974 for his excellent performance in this movie, but he didn't win.
A great often overlooked film with a unforgettable ending. Love the Paul Williams song. The look on Clint's face at the end says a thousand words. Similar ending to Midnight Cowboy.
He gets the shit kicked out of him. You need to watch the film. IMHO, a classic movie. I remember it well. It was on at the local flix with Enter The Dragon. Me and my mate stayed all day and watched both movies twice over....amazing.
one of my all time favorite films....The ending is very sad it always moves me, how basically "the Kid" got what he wanted...ie he hit the big time and it destroyed him.
There are no more great writers, great actors who are manly without being psychos, or great actresses. Hollywood is a cesspool now. You will not see anymore great movies like this one ever again. It is a shame.

@FromCanadaEh This was one of the few roles George Kennedy has had where he's a mean mo-fo.

He died from broken neck. George Kennedy beat him up for taking the piss.

i think he's more likely to have died from a cerebral hemorrhage from the kicking - hence the slurred speech and drooping mouth.

This has been one of my alltime favorite films since I first saw it at a drive-in theatre in 1977.
