Orienteering Part 1 How to Judge Distance by Pace Count

If you don't mind metric units,you can go to the local high school track and use the lane for the one hundred meter dash to get a pace count. If you don't know which lane markings to use then go to the track when no one is using it and use the inner lane to get a pace count for one lap(400 meters),divide by four. Please respect the runners and stay out of their way!

@gammondog That's a good tip, especially for flat ground. For uneven terrain, one really needs to do their pace count on sight.
