You know, the best poet and singer I ever met, told me that Wendy O. Williams convinced her to try her hand at rock. She told me she was back stage at a Plasmatics concert and decided that "If she can to it, anybody can". Well, she is to remain nameless but she was much more successful that the Plasmatics. I'm glad she was inspired by them but it's a little (very little) too much noise for me.
One question I have...were the Plasmatics a punk band, or a metal band? I think the band were always a punk band, then later when Wendy sent solo she became more metal...
@huntr7777 A little bit of both. Punk and metal are usually the go-to styles when your agenda is to be loud, fast and edgey. And what better way to get your point across than a nice crossover metallic hardcore assault? Their music to me reminds me of that powerful UK sound that GBH, The Exploited or even Motorhead had but with some tough chick on vox.
And yeah you're right, Wendy went full blown 80's hair metal in her solo career similar to the way Billy Idol went New Wave in his.
@huntr7777 Their first albumn's were REALLY punk.Thier "Beyond the Valley of 1984", and "Metal Priestess" you begin to hear a bit of metal within some of the songs...and then :Coup D' Etat"(my personal FAVORITE) was the real shift to Metal!! The WOW solo albums were as well, but seemed to have lost the metal Plasmatics flavor.
Search "The Damned" and " Put your love in me". These songs ROCK!
@snatchhog And THAT Was for Real, Like Everything She did.! I Would Like to See the Posers and Other Wannebe-Wendy's Like "the butcherbabies" & co. Do Only One Percent, of what SHE Did... Wouldn't You?
What's the big fucking deal here ,sawing a $25 Korean Fender replica in two ?She holds it aloft like some kind of just conquered priceless war momento.Just silly. She could've struck gold in these empty"Guitar Hero" days though.

This is a continuation of the performance art scene that emerged in NYC in the early 70s and was part of the punk scene. Wayne County used to simulate sex on stage, among other things. This is taking that performance art element, which tended more towards camp, to an extreme. The danger of doing this is that you become a spectacle. I never liked the way the media treated the Plasmatics; it seemed a bit exploitative.
@ihasch well, i would say the Plasmatics maybe in a way exploited the media as much as the media exploited them, but otherwise I agree with you! Interesting point made about the 70's art scene that a lot of ppl over look!
Jeez, I can remember that when I heard (and saw) that for the first time. Must have been the 80s somewhere. More rejuvenation somebody..!? Great memories for if you are taking your grandchild to daycare...
I bought this LP, New Hope for the Wretched, in about 1981, still have it. Cool cover, sitting around a pool with a Cadillac sticking out of it. Wendy O used the chainsaw in the studio as well. Always remember watching a safe little corporate rock TV show in mid-80s South Australia and the host introduced a song... and a Plasmatics clip came on. He looked shocked at the end. I laughed and laughed and have always wondered how the hell it got in there..
This was fantastic. Like most people ahead of their time pushing envelopes, she just never understood why people didn't "get" what she was doin'. I miss her and the band.

The Plasmatics actually played at my college during the Seventies and I saw them live. Unfortunately, I was in my "Jazz Snob" phase at that time and didn't appreciate them properly. I thought they were the crassest, most annoying band ever! Later I learned to appreciate Punk and now I look back that this clip and contemplate how awesome they were.

Wendy was brutally beaten by police officers and harassed during numerous performance yet there were no cultural critics, feminist elites and media to surround her with the kind of protection that Madonna received. bought this album (New Hope for the Wretched) in a vinyl store in Edinburgh in the early 80's in limited edition coloured vinyl. Still stick this album on occasionally.
I was 20 in 1981 and here in Los Angeles in a nightclub in Hollywood I used to lip sync this song in drag and used a chain saw to cut up living room furniture and smash TVs with an large axe. Wendy was awesome and this stage act was unique and creative. The 80's were fun musically, there is nothing but garbage on the radio now. Times are different I couldnt do that now in a club.
@eldrasa It was never said once that the younger generation can't listen to this kind of music. Just that the younger generation can't have a stance on it because well, they didn't exist when this music was around. Just accept it and move on.
Did anyone notice they were all wearing masks in the vid (excepting of WOW); I saw this show years back and I didn't remember that little funny detail. And check out Wendy as she's sawing the guitar -- all porn star like - lol!
I met Wendy at a show in CT. She was sweet. She was cool as hell. The band kicked some serious ass. One of the best shows I've ever seen. RIP Wendy-O you were one of a kind.
Except for stupid mass media, the PLASMATICS were not considered a "Punk" band, and really, they weren't. They were a bunch of studio musicians fronted by a crazy performance artist trying to cash in on some shock-rock tactics in the late 70s / early 80s.
As a by-product the music turned out to be fucking great, tho. Still is.
punk rock changed my life. all for the better. the best lesson from punk rock: question authority. I have since expanded on that motto: question EVERYthing. seeking wisdom is worth your entire life. I decided to BE a musician at 12. punk rock threw gasoline on that desire. I was born punk, but I became a punk at 15. It was a combination of the death of Randy Rhoads, and the single "Too Drunk To Fuck" by DK. saw them twice, 2 many shows to list. punk rock lives, because we still affect.

I saw Her LIVE in CONCERT in TORONTO in 1981! She was an ORIGINAL Punk Princess. This is my favourite song of hers, So sad to hear of her passing until I just Googled it. Jamie lee, You must be NEW!
I also was a teen in the 70s...and the mainstream music now sucks (it always sucked) and tries to copy and invent what Wendy and others has already covered. It's just rehash!
I remember 35 years ago wearing a mohawk or green spiked hair was considered rebellious, sick and the teacher would send you to the principal's office for a long ass lecture . ..but now it's considered the norm and you can see it in dumb ass shows like American Idol. Jump on the poser bandwagon!
W.O.W took Shock Rock to another Level !!!! I wish she was still here , just the sweetest person to meet & fought her demans inside. The music business chewed her up and spit her out and sure she felt lonely?
I was a teen in the 70's......I went to see the Saints in '76 (in Melbourne Australia - have a look at the you tube posting) and my life changed! Sex Pistols, Clash, the Blessed, Plasmatics, Johnny Thunders..... unbelievable!!!!!! I'm now an old fart, an executive of a large company, and a guy that, when I'm alone, put on all the old music and remember a time when life was absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!

Lady Gaga seems to think she created everything, I think she is as shocking as a dull butter knife, but then again I loved Wendy O and Dale Bozzio from missing persons back in the 80s. Gagas look is nothing new. Tape covering the nipples? ya I seem to think ive seen it be4 lol

I saw Wendy O Williams and the Plasmatics in concert when I was 17. I found her both attractive and frightening.
