I have to drive my parent's 08 BMW m3. It's tough to start with a car, whose engine carries a lot of inertia. So when I take my foot off the accelerator, the car slows down a lot faster than (lets say) our Honda odyssey. It's a lot of fun to drive. I can brake and launch from a stand still pretty well for a 15 year old, but my only concern is shifting gear. When I'm going for 2nd, I let go of the clutch slowly, but then the car has this moment where it drastically slows a bit, but then engages.

I recently tried my hand at driving a manual car after using only automatics for years. It was fun, but scary as fuck.

It took me 15-20 minutes just to learn how to launch the car smoothly. Then the part with hills came up and I was stalling 3-4 times holding up traffic. By the end, I only really learned how to properly shift and brake. Put me on a hill and watch me begin stalling again.

It wasn't easy...but I still want to do it!

@INumba1Stunna 1. Personally I'm pressing the brake first; this way I using both the brakes and the engine to brake. It reduces wear on the brakes and helps you keep control of the car. I'm only pressing the clutch at the last moment before going to a complete stop.

2. When stopping at the lights I usually put neutral, so I don't have to keep the clutch pressed. I switch to 1st gear only moments before the lights change. When parking you should always leave your car in gear.

@FoolishInTheEnd there's not really set speeds for the gears, generally, though first is for starting and very low speeds, in my experience, the fastest you can go in 2nd in about 20 or 25, 3rd and 4th are really versatile, 5th for highway. I never look at the tachometer, eventually you will just learn to feel it in the engine, at a certain point you can't go any faster in 2nd and the engine will start to strain, you shift to 3rd and it will feel nice and smooth.

@FoolishInTheEnd when you shift gears depends on your driving situation, the higher the rpms are when you shift up, the faster you can accelerate, if you shift from 1st to 2nd and thus go from 2500rmp to like 1500, your car wont accelerate as fast, but if you shift from 4500rpms and end up at 3000rpms, your vehicle will accelerate faster with the higher rpms, its like starting into a sprint from standing still and then from jogging, starting from a jog is easier, same with rpms
