  • 11 people in the world are Hamburgers.

  • A brilliant musican- too crazy, too talented maybe.

    Too miscellaneous and unadapted...

  • How can you watch this & not like this? This is real fuckin music boy...

  • Zappa's old bassist and drummer are here (and former Mothers guitarist?). figures they'd play with Beffheart.

  • Insanely love Beefheart. Thanks!

  • CAPITAINE COEUR DE BOEUF AU BATACLAN PARIS POUR POP 2

  • I fuckin love the way it's so disjointed!

  • @AskMeArse1966 Not disjointed - original.

Its contemporary smoothed-over identikit production-line Xfactorcrap that's making you think that.

  • @LondonDada Jesus sorry,original. Point is I love this band,and many others ranging from 1950's - the present day,and I disdain X Factor. Why bother argueing mate,lifes too short ; )

  • its like these guys on the instruments could play and everyone went oh yeah then they went hell yeah and then some,

  • Even though he borrows heavily from Howlin' Wolf, among other masters, he sings a mean blues and does his own thing. You can't say that about Clapton, Jon Spencer, Jagger, etc. And the bottleneck work here is super clean! It's a shame that CB probably won't ever be considered a real blues musician/singer, because he's so "eccentric" and for veering from the traditional style.

  • Much better live. Looks like the band actually enjoys this version...don't think they had too much fun on the studio version...

  • This is the version they should have played on the spotlight kid.

  • 10 people have no idea what is happening before them..

  • ummm that's good

  • That's Roy Estrada playing bass on this tune. Roy played for Zappa and was the first bass player in Little Feat.

    CFaust

  • Drummer was about to pass out at the end of the song.

  • They look like they're having a fucking great time on stage...musta kind of made up for all the shit they got off The Captain...

  • These boys were nuts!!! Sad I never heard of him before he passed, he plays a mean harp too

  • there's my baby wavin' a handkerchief 'round! my ears stand up! when i hear that sound! got to love it.

  • de hole ting is gear fab. nor'linz go down to norlinz

  • de hole ting is gear fab.

  • This beat blows my mind ,great vocal and great harp solo....an' if you don't like it it's 'cause yer don't get it !!

  • The best voice in the business, or was the best voice in the business.!!!

  • Um, That is amazing.

Guitarist says " Spot-Light Kid" was their worst record, pretty damn great for a worst record (click Clack appeared on that record) I only knew Click Clack as a kid from the "Whole-Earth Catalog" Comp. record. Always liked that Beefheart sound. Live version just puts it over the moon for me.

  • Ummmmm, That is amazing.

  • @axewarmer Oh My God you remember WB's "Whole Earth Catalog"??? I thought I was the only one left on the planet that knew of that great record. People just give me blank stares when I bring it up. That record got me hooked on T. Rex.

  • Guys, this isn't from 1973, it's 1972. He didn't play in Paris in 73, also, Alex St. Claire was with the band.

  • Can someone invent a time machine so I can go to this gig!!!!!!

    RIP Don.

  • This was actually taken from a German television appearance...the Captain was a genius!

  • @smoreent You are thinking of the "Beat Club" appearance, where they did "I'm Gonna Booglarize You, Baby" same tour, recorded a few days before this appearance.

  • gitarist loses hat. and gives not one f^#%

  • A grEat muSical dAdaisT .. and a remarkable human being. RIP ( rock in paradise ) el 'Cap.

  • Damn... how does a crude old recording sound so $%$#@@@@!!! good!!!???

GENIUS ... the Van Vliet vein should be mined as long hairless apes are picking up instruments.

  • What year is this?

  • @kenjd111 the year 1973 Live in Paris

  • true to music ........great respect to Don van Vliet.........

    peteratanas

  • I'm gonna grow fins...

  • go down to n'awlins get herself lost and found

  • Nice harmonica playing from the Captain (R.I.P.)

  • Clickity Clack bring my spirit back!! I just got his biography from the library last week!

Wierd how things are arranging themselves! Changed the way I listened to music and changed my musical tastse forever! Thank you Don!! RIP

  • We have lost one of the true innovators and visionaries in this life. Who can ever forget the first time you ever heard ANYTHING on "Trout Mask Replica'? He opened my ears to all the possibilities that lie in music and rhythm. He had a gruff exterior but was a real creampuff-look to his lyrics. Was there ever a greater love song than "My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains"? I'm happy that he came along during my lifetime. Rest in Peace Captain.

"Apes-ma, you're not getting any older."

  • R I P DON

Great Musicien, forever in our ears and our heart

  • The best recording artist ever!

  • the ship the ship its the mothership.

  • So long,farewell the captain.

  • bye Don, glad you visited us!

  • Captain Beefheart has died and so has a a small part of me. His songs and performances were so big for me in college and beyond. He taught me Dada which has remained my favorite art ever since. In a biblical sounding lyric, "The Dust blows forward and the Dust blows back!" Long live Captain Beefheart! And Trout Mask Replica! This video looks like the show we saw in Atlanta circa 1972?

  • RIP Captain....a 'mother of invention" in his own right. click clack click clack

  • I still hope this is a Neon Meat Dream (from an Octafish)

  • Thanks for discovering the 7th and 9th musical dimensions

  • RIP Captain. One of a kind.

  • RIP Donnie.

  • rest in peace gentle captain.

you're probably clickin and clackin and booglarizin with zappa right now

  • R.I.P. to one of the best there ever was...

  • Captain - Thank you, thank you, thank you for blowing the door off the hinges. It was JUST what we needed! You're STILL ahead of your time, Brother! Fare thee well.

  • I love you.

  • R.I.P. Don Van Vliet.

  • the white sun ra

  • He's like the misbegotten son of Howlin' Wolf and a bottle of Whiskey XD

Don't ask me who's been the woman in the relationship X'D

  • Looks like 9 people need their youtube accounts deleted.

  • Sublime

  • THIS iS LOVE

  • @lagginswag I agree,but all geniuses are assholes..(it's Don Vliet)

  • I really love this music. Too bad Van Fliet was a fucking maniac who verbally and physically abused his musicians, paid them very little or not at all, and ran the magic band like a goddamn cult. Someone shoulda beaten the shit outta him.

  • @vankook Who cares? They chose to stay.

  • @vankook I agree,but lots of geniuses are assholes..!

  • @vankook I agree,but lots of geniuses are sociopath assholes..!(ps.it's Don Vliet)(RIP)

  • @vankook Yeah, that's probably why Zappa and Beefheart didn't get along, two strong minds that could not be controlled.

  • these are colored people.

  • This live version better than album version

  • @themitchies yup

  • "My ears stand up when I hear that sound" Brilliant...I saw this line up in Oxford, dynamite.

  • Terrific!

    ..Blew my hat off too

  • Wow! Nice stuff - I guess I saw them on this same European tour, in London.

  • Guitarist looks a lot like Harrison. That little slide riff in the beginning is delicious.

  • people dont understand the geniusness of Beefheart. I am most definitely NOT one of those people who dont understand this.

  • Fast and bulbous!!

  • One of the best things I've ever seen.

  • It's like watching Bilbo Baggins rock out.

  • Check out Estrada gettin' down!

  • Kinda music that makes you realise there's not much point listening to anything else

  • @kristalklass

It just set that bar way too high for anyone else to reach it

  • @kristalklass Been thinking the same thing myself a lot recently.

  • I hear poor, devolved, ripped-off kids talking about "beats," nowadays and how 'modern' everybody thinks they are. That's sadly comical when you think about and listen to the dynamite these guys were playing with 4 decades ago.

This song's always rattled my bones the right way and made me feel better about being an Earthling. What a band!! Fast Forward....into the Past - and bring it back! Thanks and kudos for posting this to parris43...

  • Great Beefheart song , saw Roy Estrada last year in a band with Don Preston ,nice to see he is still playing

  • what a groove!! like only the Captain can.

  • I sawthe captain and his band when they came to the UK in 73 they were brilliant. Thanks for posting.

  • That cape is FUCKING awesome!! _O_

  • badass.

  • like.... this is music, yes.

  • i hear my baby walkin' down duh hall leavin' me alla' tah heem...

  • this is fuckin amazing

  • CB - King o' the Blues

  • My woman threatened to go down to New Orleans,to get herself lost and found...

  • It disturbed me then, it disturbs me now...I AM disturbed.

  • They don't make music like this anymore. And they didn't back then either. One of a kind.

  • I love how Mark Boston's hat falls off at 0:42 and he doesn't seem to notice it. Art Tripp is awesome! Don's voice sounds great here too, they probably blew everybodys' mind.

  • my ears stand up when i hear that sound

  • genuis... saw the cap'n when i was 14 in glasgow, blew the house down... perverted me totally, life's never been the same, even 40 years later, thank god

  • Camera work is brilliant.

  • Has anyone seen the performance of Ashtray Heart from SNL? It's been removed from youtube. Tragedy. On that night they were the best band on earth. A second or two after the band comes to a screeching halt, there is absolute silence. Then from the audience, comes a subdued but definite...Holy Shit!!! Amazing performance.

  • Top of their form. This track is legendary.

  • Zoot Horn Rollo is one good looking man.

  • If you were a REAL woman youd easily the CAP is the most attractive MAN on the planet !

  • 1973 live in paris? i remember 'click clack' coming out in 76 from the lp 'spotlight kid'.

  • 'the spotlight kid' was released in early 1972

  • fuck me this band can rock

  • The Cap' & the band in their pomp right here.

  • One of the best live performances recorded. Look at Art Tripp wail on the drums!

  • roy estrada!!! yeah!!!

  • This performance is great and slightly hypnotic.

  • Yeah what a band this was. I saw them four times over a couple of years. Saw them a couple of weeks before everyone in the band quit.

The band made an album called Mallard.

And Beefheart carried on the tour with hired guys who were pretty tragic.

  • Man, the Cap'n sure blew a mean harp!

  • Brilliant how Don managed to get his musicians gyrate around him.

It seems spontanuous ,but I think he choreographed it that way.

One get's the image of a shaman like master performer with his "mad"servants around & around him.

Especialy in the' Icecream For Crow" vid.

  • God what an influence in bands came from this guy. I hear early AC/DC, Stevie Wright. He is now getting recognised.Sad but cool..

  • Light years ahead of his time, saw him at Notts uni in 1972? A hot late summer eve he Stated "Ive got too many fans and not enough Fans" The World aint Stable

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band.

  • It is insane that Art Tripp wore a monocle whilst drumming!

Amazing, much love to the Magic Band + Mr. Magic Man Van Vliet.

  • Fast and bulbous!

  • fast n bulbous indeed

  • Genius.

  • The magic band was so fuckin sweet.

  • I'm sure I already posted here but it bears repeating- on of the greatest concert acts I ever saw was this tour -these guys.

Irks me to no end when crits refer to it as his "commercial period".

This song is a masterpiece PERIOD. Numerous songs from Spotlight Kid and even Clear Spot are A+. Spotlight Kid got played constantly in our apartment in 73.

  • well what a bonus i saw the captain and the magic band this year(73)at the university of kent along with 500 other people all off whom were trippin thanks to the boys in the lab(free with the orange drink as you went in!!)

  • First song I ever heard by Beefheart. I was hooked. My friends thought I was zonked (of course I was!). Man, what an artist. I saw the whole movie "Trout Mask Replica".....yes it was a movie...via a little windowpane. There's no substitute for the original. What an artist........ Listen to the original vinyl version...of Mirror Man, still holds the record of the most psychedelic music in the history or man (or woman) kind. WOW

  • Its a shame there's very little footage of the magic band during this period.

  • @shortprsn zappa holds most of the footage of the magic band

  • roy estriata what are you doing there? haha great song

  • he's on the "booglarize..." video on here, too. And it's Estrada.

  • This version, IMO is better than the studio version, as it is fuller, and sounds like it has more oomph to it. Did Beefheart ever release this version?

  • yeah, it's on the 'grow fins rarities' box set

  • Such great music.

  • I just discovered beefheart a week ago and I can't stop listening.

  • Welcome to the fold. ;-) A crankin oil dripping brother hood of man.Along with many Zappa fans of course. :-).

Have a listen to "Bong fury" too,Album is a live Zappa concert featuring the Captain as well as Franks own genius.Nice mix.

  • it's 'bongo fury' and frank's, not franks. you are most certainly a zappa devotee!

  • Yeah i got the Album just type fast and dont re read in enough detail.I do well for a dyslexic. I know, I missed a '

  • This is a lightning bolt every time for me. I want to hear people try to cover it.

  • so fucking thick and juicy

  • winged eel fingerling

  • High voltage man

  • Fast And Bulbous!!

  • Fab And Bulous !!

  • Just noticed Don giggle at 2.21 and I must have watched this a dozen times! Rockette truly ran on laser beans.....

  • FYI: If you use a : instead of a . for time stamps, YouTube automatically makes it a link, like thus: 2:21. :D Nice observation btw, very attentive.

  • Hey, nice one - hadn't realised!

  • Thank god this shit's on video. It's like nourishing food.

  • @solarwave Amen, brother.

  • ba da da ba bom ba da da ba bom

  • nice

  • Great harp player - Great man

Check him out on Advance Romance - its too much along with Denny Walley's slide

  • greatest blues track ever.

  • This isn't experimental, it's simply one of the greatest blues ever produced, and not many other white artists can claim that. Awesome in the real sense of this much overused word.

  • this is the show i saw in vancouver at the first ever commodore ballroom rock concert, march 1973. what an incredible memory, what a band.

  • mind candy it aint. but i envy anyone who witnessed his gig live.

  • Man, this sounds so good and right on to the record, bands who write boring songs can't even do their crap right live. Long Live the Captain.

  • is that french blowin' drum? someone help?

  • Thats Ed Marimba

  • Organic! Orgasmic!

  • My ears stand up when I hear that sound. Cut the cake! We'll all get well!

  • Since 2 weeks I am the possesion of a genuine copy of Grow Fins 1965-1982 :D

  • I enjoy Beefheart's music for the sheer enjoyment of it. I certainly don't expect everyone to enjoy or even understand his music. He does have a unique slant on blues and experimental music and is definately one of music's most colourful characters.

  • beefheart certainly has his share of fanatics, but so do many cult-pop entities. beefheart was an original and, of course he was a self-promoter, but certainly nothing along the line of today's shameless 'musicians". his music is for those who like avant-garde with a wry smirk...by something that doesn't come through the same factory press as nearly all commercialized pop-pabulum.

start with jim morrison's fans if you want to trash people for worshiping the inane and talentless.

  • whats the thing with Jim Morrison? Talentless and inane are you crazy? He was a wild beast, man, that' all the shit you want right under your nose, his genitals in your face, y'know? Don't be square, man!

  • your comment is nearly incoherent gibberish...seems you speak morrison's language.

  • hey thats a funny thing to say on a Beffheart post

  • morrison was drug-addled.

beefheart was only pretending to be dissipated.

c.beeheart was always spectacularly coherent when interviewed.

morrisson was a god...to teeny-bopper, reebok wearing, prepubescent girls.

  • what does it change if he was drug-adled or whatever? you cant deny he IS rock'n roll, man, he personifies it absolutely

  • ok, you like jim morrison, you are in good company....i like the doors, but jim morrison leaves me cold. that's all, 'nuff said on the subject. i'll give u the final word.

  • ur an idiot!

  • i really hate the term experimental music, isn't all music meant to be experimental? I don't get prog either... eeh. Beefheart music for Beefheart people. Is it wrong that I feel smarter than people who don't like this?

  • you ARE smarter than people who don't like this. this is the shit!

  • I think, perhaps, you feel you have a greater awareness and appreciation of music that's more individual like Beefheart's, which has a willingness to take chances. A lot of people have been musically dummied down by aggressively hyped, clone acts who don't challenge them, and therefore, have a low appreciation or tolerance of music that's in anyway different from what they're used to. So, I'd have to say no, not all music is meant to be experimental. Some music is meant to sell massive units.

  • Bandcouver, you took the words right out of my mouth. People are very unsophisticated when it comes to music nowadays, they don't like tunes that make them think.

For the critics/people who say Captain Beefheart's music was nothing more than just an artsy fartsy music dabbling ego trip. Well, you can just go back to your mindless sheep background music bullshit.

  • Listen to Love-lies on The Shiny Beast album, then come back and tell us what you think. Don's voice is beautiful. NOt that we/he have to prove anything, but still....

  • Maybe you need to stick with the Vanilla Ice and you won't be faced with trying to comprehend something that you obviously aren't equipped to evaluate.

  • Beefheart had, like Freddie Mercury, a four-octave vocal range :)
