the "Christmas Tree" is taken from the Ancient Norse practice of using an evergreen tree as an effigy for Yggdrasil, the World Tree, under which the Aesir (Norse Gods) were said to live. It was said that the stars dangled from the branches of Yggdrasil, hence the lights and tinsel on the tree. Odin was said to go from house to house on his 8 legged horse, delivering toys made by his elves (and in Norse mythology, elves were Odin's helpers).

Christmas is so pagan, it's funny.

Christmas tree is an oxymoron already. If you don't think so, you need to take a religious history lesson. It's straight out of a pagan holiday. If you were a real Christian you would have a nativity scene and that's all. Also you would probably make a bigger deal out of Easter. Christmas says a guy was born. Easter says he rose from the dead. Which one takes more conviction in your beliefs?

Actually you could argue that both ways. By calling it a Christmas tree you are shoving Christianity down peoples throats, by calling it a holiday tree you are showing respect to all non Christians. Going back in time the Christians seemed to have appropriated the idea of bringing in green trees and plants from non Christian faiths so it could be argued that calling it a Christams tree is quite intolerant.

Basically stop being so sensitive :)

@lennyf1957 LOL, he's not calling it a Holiday tree to be PC, he's calling it that because he doesn't celebrate a sacred mass for an ancient infant-king, and most of the people watching this probably don't either. The truly PC thing to do would be to call it a Christmas tree only for the Christian majority who might be offended by "Holiday tree."

@lennyf1957 - Which part of the Bible mentions northern european trees with blinking lights being present at the birth of Christ? You call it a Christmas tree because you live in a mostly christian country and because the people who invented that religion decided to pick a pre-existing festival date for the birth of their invisible friend's avatar. The tree was there before the kid, and will probably remain there after he becomes a footnote. Trees are important, and do give us gifts.

What if it did mention the Christmas tree? Say in Jeremiah 10, where Yahweh orders not to follow the traditions of the pagans that the church stole the ritual from and the tree specifically.

Half the population are women, check the statistics for assaults, most people will not tolerate intimidation of others just for being different.
