It was sad the mental stress Mary was put through, during her life, being denied seeing her mother, being humiliated having to wait on her half sister, fearing for her life for years upon end, abandoned and then forced into submission by her father. Never having known true love and never able to be a mother. Yes she burned people, but history needs to cut some slack with Mary, the "bloody" title is unfair considering what she went through, I don't think she was truly evil.
@CatherineSuffolk. It's called, I know what a monarch is and what it does, I don't need you to tell me, I was stating a point, about power and monarchy, that's all.
God I could never understand how people worshipped one person so much, when there was only one of him. Hundred people in the room could easily overpower and kill him, so why didn't they. He was a human like the rest of us. I swear people were so stupid back then.
Personally I don't know if it was because she was first born or because of her Spanish royal genes but henry the 8th was actually very fond of Mary. When she acted out and disobeyed him he was angry and called it her Spanish stubborness but at times cried too because they were at odds. It's in the biography books to prove it!! She was priviledged and she knew it and spoiled!!!!!
I feel so sorry for Mary. One minute she's his daughter, the next minute her beloved mother's marriage to her father, a marriage of decades, is suddenly invalid and she's labelled a "bastard". He shuns her and prevents her from seeing her mother when she is dying, for years. Then, he suddenly acknowledges her again but still mistrusts her. She's an innocent playing ball in Henry's sick power game. He's the only real bastard in this.
@brandie7654 She isn't even 22, yet! IMDB lists her birth year at 1991. The third season of Tudors came out in 2008-ish. That would make her around 17-ish.
Why isn't Cromwell bowing as low as the others? I mean I know he's worried but you think that he'd be smart enough to know that he'd draw more attention to himself by NOT bowing low than if he did. In any case he should've since Princess Mary is a Princess AND a King's daughter after all.
Mary is very beautiful. Jane is pretty, of course, but Mary is more unique.
No wonder Cromwell looks worried. Mary may have influence over his father, and even worse - Henry don't have a son and if something happens to him, Mary will probably be the Queen. Not good for the Reformes. In any case, he's so adorable! I almost melt when I'm looking into his eyes!
name examples please of how she was so evil. is it the murders of protestants ? will what about how her father killed catholics and her sister did too. so maybe she was a bit bitter and evil but so were elizabeth and henry. and we only have henry to thank for the way his children turned out. i'm sick of ppl always hating on mary. wonder how u would feel in her situation
@fleurgi Just cause Henry did killed more Catholics doesn't make it right and she's evil cause she burned a woman after giving birth and they threw the baby in the fire with her mother.
@Romanodibellezza her father had catholic pregnat woman raped to make her either lose her baby or to hurry labour then after that if it was a girl have it raped then if it was a boy death but the soilders would make the mother watch her innocent baby die and if she didn't change religion the she would be dead you decied which is more evil
Mary wasn't a 'villain' in her early life. She was actually the outcast; discarded as a child. And she very muched loved her father and was fiercely loyal to her mother. She also got along well with Elizabeth and Edward despite the age difference and religion. It wasn't until she became queen that she became the 'Bloody Mary'.
The actress who portrays Mary is very beuatiful.. Mary was in fact very beuatiful as a young lady. I bet Henry had never expected that she would follow him on the throne and rule England for five years.
But I personally think Mary was a women, who experienced one dissappointment to another. She was banned from court as a child, never saw her mother again, married a man who not loved her and died childless by a tumor.
Some father Henry was! Who tells a crowd of people "I remeber some of you were desirerous that I should put this jewel to death." that in front of your own daughter?? No wonder the poor girl fainted from fright.
I don't think Henry ever hated Mary. He loves her, but like father, like daughter, she is as stubborn as he on the religion issue. Plus he's kinda jaded in life, so it's good to see him surrounded by Jane and Mary.
Henrys so cool the way he bes so Evil and Dark in that scen >=). Johnny is an amazing Henry! I just hope in season 4 they make him look fatter :(. Or at least make him wear loads of clothes under his Tudor Costumes to make him seem bigger.
Btw how come its only women who love The Tudors? All I see is women going on about how "Sexy ppl are in it" and all lol. And its all women O_O.
Am I the only guy who is obsessed with The Tudors?? O_o
Sir Francis Bryan was known as "The Vicar Of Hell" and renown for his blunt manner of speaking so his exchange with Mary was very much in character. BTW, I believe at this point we are in late 1536/early 1537 so Mary (born 1516) would be about 20 years old. And at the risk of seeming as lecherous as Sir Francis let me say that Sarah Bolger is one of the most beautiful women on Earth.
Henry gets to me! I mean you make a REALLY HOT MAN and turn him into one of the most bitchy men in the world who was fat! Johnny makes an awesome Henry but it just makes me believe him as Henry and i hate him but i like it!
I really think that jane was lucky. As we see with the episode 3-3 previews, elizabeth was re-introduced at court. To me, it feels like that was pushing her luck.
Cromwell looks downright constipated Lol! He did seem (apart from Anne Boleyn) to put it into Henry's head to be rid of his eldest child at some point. He certainly deems Mary a threat.
oh sure she is of the old faith. cromwell wants power like wosley did in season 1. Liked cromwell when he first appeared in season 1 but late into season i didnt !
I still like Cromwell-as one of the characters I love to hate. :) And speaking of characters-I am deeply disappointed Archbishop Cranmer/Hans Matheson is not present this season. He was there right to the end-until Mary I had him burned as the stake. :(
me too. maybe he doesnt believe mary is like her mother, honest in virtue. cause his is the only one who known apart from catherine that she was a true virgin on their wedding night!
Henry is trying to find out if his daughter Mary is a virgin. Sir Francis asks Mary who is obviously innocent if she had ever heard of a court game called 'cunnilingus'.
Lol. My Nephews who are in their teens know more 'scientific' words of a sexual nature than I ever did well into my twenties-and even in my thirties lol! They certainly do seem to learn a lot faster in this generation. :)
I remember reading a bit about him in Tudor books but I could not recall his story-thanks for refreshing the old memory! Jonathan's 'Luca Brasi' analogy is classic-just brilliant lol!
"I will TRY Sir Francis". Translation: Just wait until I ascend you ugly old lecherous goat-I am going to have me a Bar B Q!
Lol. All joking aside-Go Mary! She is doing what she should have done years before-and as her sister would do after Mary ascended to the Throne. She's playing the game she has to play to survive. I think her zeal, her deep piety worked against her. Elizabeth was religious to a degree but not a zealot. She was wise enough to play the 'when in Rome' game. And it worked.
I know Henry wants to know if his daughter Mary is truly still a virgin-but it's kind of creepy the way he goes about trying to find out. He could have at the very least sent one of the married ladies to Mary-perhaps even her own governess.
Creepy lecher is just the word! I don't know how old Mary is supposed to be here (The Tudors series is all over the place as far as historical facts) but anyway in this day and age he could at the very least be charged with sexual harassment lol! And her father maybe for worse..
at the time of elizabeth's birth mary was 17 years old so here , as elizabeth was around 6 when they killed anne must at least over 20! Just a guess on my part
I have always understood Elizabeth to be about 3 years old when Anne was murdered (that's what I call it-murdered not just killed). The producers of the show are definitely taking quite a bit of artistic license as far as the facts.
well like all shows children characthers age quicky. remember angel when connor aged from a few months to 20 in a few episodes. henry doesnt even look like a father of an 18 year old here. he should look 40 here not 30!!!
I agree about Henry. The producers of the show are trying to age him versus having the actor JRM wear fat suits but he is just too good looking-and in real life he IS in his early 30's-perhaps they should give him a bit of grey on the sides.
Sir Francis bryan wasnt only a creepy lecher. He was a backstabber who was also partly responsible for his cousin's anne boleyn's downfall. Lol. I liked when JRM compared him to Luca Brasi from the god fatehr!
erh. this is season 3 anne is/was dead. if she had not signed the act of submission in the last episode. And Anne doesnt explain why he was a bish to the other 4 wives AND how he treated elizabeth.
hate his show..... why are they running off stage anyway.... and the woman who had to test 12 men. god if your cycle is 28/32 days you should know who the daddy is... god what a slut she making herself out to be! Trash Tv gone even worse!
I always think-what would any of us had done-or how would anyone of had grown up-if we had been in Mary Tudor's shoes. And with such a tyrant of a father.
I admire Mary too very much where once upon a time I did not think very well of her. But over the years as I learned more about her-and her painfully stunted life-I felt a great empathy for this tragic Tudor Queen. I'm glad that it seems the tide of opinion has turned for many Tudor fans over the years.
I have noticed quite a few revisions in people's opinions of Mary since my childhood-including from me. And I am glad. And you are right-it is as it should be. :)
i feel for mary too cause of the tudors. i dont care what david starkey says the tudors have changed minds on the main tudor characthers, anne, mary, & catherine. we can see their lives and understand them better!
I have seen mention by Tudor fans of a book about Mary called "The First Queen of England: The Myth of "Bloody Mary" by Linda Porter. I would very much like to read it so I am ordering it from Amazon. :)

Thank you for posting this!
I know Henry wants to know if his daughter Mary is truly still a virgin-but it's kind of creepy the way he goes about trying to find out. He could have at the very least sent one of the married ladies to Mary-perhaps even her own governess.

I know...especially sending that creepy lecher after her *shudder*.

CatherineSuffolk 2 years ago
I have always understood Elizabeth to be about 3 years old when Anne was murdered (that's what I call it-murdered not just killed). The producers of the show are definitely taking quite a bit of artistic license as far as the facts.

well like all shows children characthers age quicky. remember angel when connor aged from a few months to 20 in a few episodes. henry doesnt even look like a father of an 18 year old here. he should look 40 here not 30!!!
CatherineSuffolk 2 years ago
I agree about Henry. The producers of the show are trying to age him versus having the actor JRM wear fat suits but he is just too good looking-and in real life he IS in his early 30's-perhaps they should give him a bit of grey on the sides.

put this jewel to death, erh, henry wasnt that ur idea? O.o

it was anne who put it in his head!
CatherineSuffolk 2 years ago
Indeed it was. Thank goodness he was not THAT mad. Or too scared to try to kill the daughter of Katherine of Aragon.

Sir Francis bryan wasnt only a creepy lecher. He was a backstabber who was also partly responsible for his cousin's anne boleyn's downfall. Lol. I liked when JRM compared him to Luca Brasi from the god fatehr!
:-D

I admire poor Mary so much. She went through so much. I'm happy to know Queen Jane was there for her as a Mother figure.

Same here. :)
I always think-what would any of us had done-or how would anyone of had grown up-if we had been in Mary Tudor's shoes. And with such a tyrant of a father.
PhillyGal4Ever 2 years ago 2
I admire Mary too very much where once upon a time I did not think very well of her. But over the years as I learned more about her-and her painfully stunted life-I felt a great empathy for this tragic Tudor Queen. I'm glad that it seems the tide of opinion has turned for many Tudor fans over the years.
PhillyGal4Ever 2 years ago 4
Yes, I've noticed that there are a lot more Mary supporters, as there should be in my opinion.
Gabbycrts 2 years ago 5
I have noticed quite a few revisions in people's opinions of Mary since my childhood-including from me. And I am glad. And you are right-it is as it should be. :)
PhillyGal4Ever 2 years ago
Yes I've noticed that too, and there seems to be some more sympathetic biographies of her.

i feel for mary too cause of the tudors. i dont care what david starkey says the tudors have changed minds on the main tudor characthers, anne, mary, & catherine. we can see their lives and understand them better!
CatherineSuffolk 2 years ago
That's a very good thing. It's just a shame it took this long for them to be more sympathetic to her.

I have seen mention by Tudor fans of a book about Mary called "The First Queen of England: The Myth of "Bloody Mary" by Linda Porter. I would very much like to read it so I am ordering it from Amazon. :)
