well nascar has done amazing things in past ten years to protect there drivers. for years now I can not understand why indy car has sat on there laurels for the sake of money. this COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. RIP
Proof of how strong the roll bars are. Both of these accidents would have killed him if these cars did not have roll bars. Ironically both roll overs are Dan Weldon.
Really sad to hear that he died, but whoever posted this is ignorant with no concept of how these cars are designed. There is indeed a roll over bar that is extremely strong that is built into the cars that the camera sits atop. No car, open cockpit or closed, is going to save a driver whose car enters the catch fencing at 220 mph the way his did.
Count your blessings because we're lucky we only lost 1 driver today. So easily could have lost several plus spectators. RIP Dan
@atjays funny you made the point of video in your own post and do not realize it. you said we are lucky we lost only one. I do not consider that lucky. I consider it sad and neglect of researching new safety. Safety 1st. Now RIP 2 of my favorite drivers, Greg Moore and Dan Wheldon because of lack of preparation and safety. People don't watch these races for Max speed they watch for the completion of it. Less speed safer car still would get as many fans.
This is a great tragedy, but racing is all about speed and risk. Dan Weldon was a great driver. Please don't turn this into a "hate racing" rant. Racing is a dangerous and risky sport. These people race and understand the risk. Dan died doing what he loved doing.
great video from a visual perspective, does anyone know which car Dan's was?
RIP to the man anyway, I can't say I had ever heard of him before, I know nothing of US racing, but obviously to those who did this is a great loss. The speeds those cars go at is ridiculous.
If anything good can come form this it is improved safety.
@ufewl The video Starting at an "on board" on the car n ° 77 (Weldon car). Some cars collide first forward, all trying to decrease and go back down. Weldon fails to slow down. Weldon hits another car from behind and embarks on a flight rolling to the wall. In 3:33 you see the car coming into the picture and hit the wall inverted. A disgrace.
THIS IS THE RISK, HE TOOK IT. HE GOT IT. It's not Indy cars fault! Those racers know what can happen, They do it cause they love it. R.I.P. Danny boy...
