  • Many Thanks!

  • Bono the ponced up arserag

  • this song is about a trade unionist leader. and luke was a communist.

two little fact most people don't know.

    iNo Pasarán!

  • If a song can be an eye-opener, this is one. I always thought the only version of this song worth talking about was by Joan Baez. How wrong can a man be. Rarely is it so pleasurable to be wrong. Kelly is sadly unsung in the USA--even the Irish radio shows seldom play him. Paddy Reilly did a terrific tribute song to him, "The Minstrel Bo y."

  • Joe Hill is in Mt. Pleasant, MI with the faculty of CMU.

  • Joe Hill is in Wisconsin this evening.

    ~

  • as early as i can remember back, i heard luke singing. my grandfather would sit and play his records on a sunday afternoon, and i would sit and listen to his amazing voice.

  • i dreamed i saw luke kelly last night, best dream i had in years.

  • did luke play fiddle

  • Luke, you were my early inspiration; I remember my proudest hour was singing this song in school and my dad cheering me with tears in his eyes,.

We spoke the other day, my dad and I...he is now 83 and I am 54. This song is as relevant now as it ever was. Bless you, Luke Kelly.

  • @gairid i love this x

  • I know of two thieving capitalist bastards who wouldn't be a fan of this tune, that would be Michael Lowry and Denis O' Brien

  • i would rather c a statue of the great luke kelly than the spire but what can ya do ............. im beginning to think scorn not his simplicity was written about bertie ahern

  • @shankeed

I think you're thinking of "Scorn not his duplicity" - greetings from "the black north"

  • @cass1957 simplicity?

  • tony 10396962 couldn't have said it better myself!!!!!

  • Joe Hill has been spending a lot of time in Wisconsin, lately.

    ~

  • @thenthelightningwill Here here! We need a lot of Joe Hills these days; ever since Reagan decided to fire the Air traffic Controllers and posties, politicians think they can just legislate workers' rights out of existence!

  • This mans talent was just freakish, one of a kind, and he makes every other singer seem so mundanely average in comparison. He is a world treasure and deserves to be recognised as such. He had everything you could want in a singer, and we'll never see his likes again thats for sure

  • is there a biography of Joe Hill?

  • more than death to kill luke his music lives forever

  • awwwwh luke

  • did luke played the fiddle too? o_0

just asking, cause he has a fiddle on the pic.

  • love the comments love the music love luke kelly.rip

  • My last name is Kelly and I'm proud to share it with the likes of Luke . . . if I were blessed with another son I'd name him Luke . . . and his sister would be named Lucy . . . RIP, Luke (and Joe)

  • Says Joe, "I ain't dead!".

Joe Hill is at yor side!

  • To Arms against Fascism! !No Pasaran!

  • Says i lLuke yer not dead....when ye year the wind in the trees or whistlin through the long grass in the meadow ... tis thar yeal foine Luke Kelly.

  • 70 today - RIP Luke

  • joe might have died but luke never will.

  • the gun's coalminer-operators killed Joe Hill in the turn of the century, but Globalization is killing every Joe Hill around the world in THIS turn of OUR century

  • norah.kennedy

  • they cant kill the dream

  • legend

  • Solid as a rock

  • great version from an unsurpassed master

  • irish man all the way;-)

  • do teenagers today have any idea who luke was? he should be still played on radio instead of that guff they put on now. i'm not old but if i ever have children i'll make sure they know his music and what he stood for and believed in

  • @bottletop82 well said mate

  • someone point me 2 one one that sings this better than luke.

  • joe hill was swedish rip luke

  • bless the worker's union!

  • Wow! Stunning...

Luke Kelly was surely blessed with the most awesome singing voice you ever heard, It's sometimes difficult to put into words the enormous talent of the man..Thee Best there ever was or will ever be...God Bless you Luke. R.I.P.

    Patrick (Ireland)

  • Even the Irish can sing this great song about the unfortunate Swede Joe Hill.

  • long live the memory of joe hill!

  • great someone took initiative and wrote a song about this great man, we swedes arent that good at honoring and being proud of ourself and our own. we got a saying in sweden thats the first thing every swedish child learn, ''dont forget that you are worth nothing'' thats the thing that makes us a socialistic country :)

  • @heheilila This song is an old song. The lyrics are based off of a 1930 poem and the song was written in 1936. The most well known versions of this song are by Pete Seeger and another by Joan Baez, but this is my favorite version.

  • Classic music brings back memorys when i was a wee lad

  • Legend ! Both Luke & Joe Hill !

  • Luke, Wigan Lancashire salutes you.

  • Ireland's best

  • A national memorial / monument to the memory of Luke Kelly is in order,

The man is simply Legend, in many ways he further enhanced Ireland's status internationally. Kelly is easily the greatest male vocalist this country has ever produced. Ireland needs to remember this genius who once lived in thier midst. Worldwide comments about his amazing talent are coming thick & fast.

    His Legacy Will Live Forever...

  • Dublin city council are for making one but when... your guess is as good as anyone else's.

  • Kelly Oneil very good collection of mr Kelly.seen Chris Cavanagh last week in Armagh great night.GREAT SINGER. GREAT BAND.

  • I met Luke in Sheffield,what a man.

  • dam you luke, you set the bar to high for us mere mortals.

  • comment for kellyoneill, can you tell me the name of your site please.cheers

  • R.I.P My friend....

  • do you think we could do a petition to have one erected ?? i could make a site.. see how many would be interested ??????

  • I dont think there would be much point to it just now, all they would say is, its impossible because of the so called recession,

what kinda site did you have in mind?

I made a site and dedicated it to luke myself a few weeks ago :)

  • hey kelly.. i love the site.. fair play.. its just so hair raising when hear luke Kelly's voice. What a talent.. about the site im not too sure but i know what you mean about the reccession.. i do think however if there were a statue people would actually come from far to see it.. i mean you have people from all over the world leaving commects about Luke Kelly : )

  • @kellyoneill mullingar got a joe dolan statue in quick time

  • Luke and Joe were both SOCIALISTS! Hence, decent people.

  • This is Luke at his best. Fantastic ballad & a great great singer.

  • Beautiful Luke, just beautiful.......

  • Luke will never be dead as long as his songs are listened to. A true Dub and Irishman.

  • Jag drömde om Joe Hill i natt, nice greetings from sweden

  • The first Irish soul singer.......Luke Kelly

  • that voice of yours is inspirational boi,.,,,

  • Just curious, is there a monument to Luke anywhere in Ireland?

Yeah, I know, his monument lives in the hearts of those of us who love his music and what it stood for. But is there a plaque or anything.

  • Dublin Corporation were supposed to be erecting a lifesize statue of luke, but when the time came they decided it was costing too much money and want to settle for a 2D Plaque instead,

Rightly so his family are arguing the cheap decision, Luke more than anyone deserves the statue.

There is The Luke Kelly bridge in Ballybough tho also called Tolka Bridge.

  • Can't believe they want to not go ahead with the statue. Luke is Ireland's greatest ever singer. Cost shouldn't come into it. They are printing more money every day.

Joe Hill is my fav song ever.

  • @kellyoneill we should start a fund for a statue to luke.because he is the proper working class hereo and the voice of a true irish man fact.

  • I feel sure they named a street after him in Dublin....a life size statue on the same street would remind everyone of his warmth.

  • there,s a bridge named after him in ballybough which several west brits ojected to at the time but no monument that im aware of nacho

  • Hi , there is a plaque to him in Larkhill, Swords Road, Dublin, near Witehall RC Church. A few years ago I took a photo of plaque but it is mislaid. Luke lived in larkhill whilst a teenager. Also, whilst a teenager he played for Home farm FC at a good level.

There is a photo of him in History of Home farm FC. Same photo is in Luke's bio by Des Geraghty.

  • @nacho1560 theres a small brigde the luke kelly bridge in ballybough, hardy fitting is it, i mean just a bridge!

  • Too true!

  • word has it that there trying to get that bono to put his hand in his pocket and pay for statues of Luke and Ronnie!...but fat chance on that shitebag making it happen! , he sooner rather talk about how great they were!!

  • @carolan16 you got it right there, bono n that mob are a bunch of shitbags, lukey hated what they stand for.

  • Luke you 25 years dead, but you woudn't think it, because your singing will live forever.

  • Amen to that, machree, he lives every night on my pc.

  • @machree01 He died 4 months before I was born. Isn't it great that I can still love his music though?

  • @DwnAszPunk Any chance of a Summer School?

  • @DwnAszPunk I love his music too. He died on the same day I was born, though four years before. I think I'll always love his music.

  • CAN U IMAGINE THE SESSIONS THAT lUKE AND rONNIE ARE HAVING NOW???

  • we are good friends of luck and if u knew who joe hill was u know wat the song ment he was one in a mill . my best childhood days were here him sing in a small pub call'd ren's nest and in the dublin city center with my mum ! RIP. luke and sweet drems

  • Funny thing is about this song, I actually imagine this might be the kind of dream Luke might of had. Also mildly interesting, I dreamed I saw Luke the other night, I knew he had died, just like this song, but he belted out "Bonny Shoals of Herring" as though it was live...I was born close to the time Luke died, that's the closest I'll get to live; and still it was unreal.

  • rest in pece

  • RIP, Luke, who cared so much for humankind, and Joe Hill, the same.

May his music of socialism live on.

  • Joe Hill gave the order to Fire at his own execution! According to Bod dylan anyway, good enough for me.

  • hopefully rte will have a major tribute for his first major anniversary im a waterford man so im not actin d dub but why is there not a statue of luke in dublin RIP LUKE THE LEGEND

  • I have to agree.Luke is a legend make sure when they build it, build it big enough. He deserves nothing less.R.I.P.

  • it will be 25 years next week...god rest ya luke..

  • Just substitute old Joe Hill for every man woman and child in America. The government has trumped up charges on you all and you were found guilty, citing you dont deserve your freedom or rights because there may be a terrorist lurking among good honest citizens. Therefore you all have lost your rights and freedoms, you just dont know yet. Joe died for what he believed in and that is the reason such a mild song can bring such strong emotions.

    Peace=War

    Freedom=Slavery

    Ignorance=Strength
