If a song can be an eye-opener, this is one. I always thought the only version of this song worth talking about was by Joan Baez. How wrong can a man be. Rarely is it so pleasurable to be wrong. Kelly is sadly unsung in the USA--even the Irish radio shows seldom play him. Paddy Reilly did a terrific tribute song to him, "The Minstrel Bo y."
as early as i can remember back, i heard luke singing. my grandfather would sit and play his records on a sunday afternoon, and i would sit and listen to his amazing voice.
i would rather c a statue of the great luke kelly than the spire but what can ya do ............. im beginning to think scorn not his simplicity was written about bertie ahern
@thenthelightningwill Here here! We need a lot of Joe Hills these days; ever since Reagan decided to fire the Air traffic Controllers and posties, politicians think they can just legislate workers' rights out of existence!
This mans talent was just freakish, one of a kind, and he makes every other singer seem so mundanely average in comparison. He is a world treasure and deserves to be recognised as such. He had everything you could want in a singer, and we'll never see his likes again thats for sure
My last name is Kelly and I'm proud to share it with the likes of Luke . . . if I were blessed with another son I'd name him Luke . . . and his sister would be named Lucy . . . RIP, Luke (and Joe)
the gun's coalminer-operators killed Joe Hill in the turn of the century, but Globalization is killing every Joe Hill around the world in THIS turn of OUR century
do teenagers today have any idea who luke was? he should be still played on radio instead of that guff they put on now. i'm not old but if i ever have children i'll make sure they know his music and what he stood for and believed in
Luke Kelly was surely blessed with the most awesome singing voice you ever heard, It's sometimes difficult to put into words the enormous talent of the man..Thee Best there ever was or will ever be...God Bless you Luke. R.I.P.
great someone took initiative and wrote a song about this great man, we swedes arent that good at honoring and being proud of ourself and our own. we got a saying in sweden thats the first thing every swedish child learn, ''dont forget that you are worth nothing'' thats the thing that makes us a socialistic country :)
@heheilila This song is an old song. The lyrics are based off of a 1930 poem and the song was written in 1936. The most well known versions of this song are by Pete Seeger and another by Joan Baez, but this is my favorite version.
A national memorial / monument to the memory of Luke Kelly is in order,
The man is simply Legend, in many ways he further enhanced Ireland's status internationally. Kelly is easily the greatest male vocalist this country has ever produced. Ireland needs to remember this genius who once lived in thier midst. Worldwide comments about his amazing talent are coming thick & fast.
hey kelly.. i love the site.. fair play.. its just so hair raising when hear luke Kelly's voice. What a talent.. about the site im not too sure but i know what you mean about the reccession.. i do think however if there were a statue people would actually come from far to see it.. i mean you have people from all over the world leaving commects about Luke Kelly : )
Dublin Corporation were supposed to be erecting a lifesize statue of luke, but when the time came they decided it was costing too much money and want to settle for a 2D Plaque instead,
Rightly so his family are arguing the cheap decision, Luke more than anyone deserves the statue.
There is The Luke Kelly bridge in Ballybough tho also called Tolka Bridge.
Can't believe they want to not go ahead with the statue. Luke is Ireland's greatest ever singer. Cost shouldn't come into it. They are printing more money every day.
Hi , there is a plaque to him in Larkhill, Swords Road, Dublin, near Witehall RC Church. A few years ago I took a photo of plaque but it is mislaid. Luke lived in larkhill whilst a teenager. Also, whilst a teenager he played for Home farm FC at a good level.
There is a photo of him in History of Home farm FC. Same photo is in Luke's bio by Des Geraghty.

Funny thing is about this song, I actually imagine this might be the kind of dream Luke might of had. Also mildly interesting, I dreamed I saw Luke the other night, I knew he had died, just like this song, but he belted out "Bonny Shoals of Herring" as though it was live...I was born close to the time Luke died, that's the closest I'll get to live; and still it was unreal.
hopefully rte will have a major tribute for his first major anniversary im a waterford man so im not actin d dub but why is there not a statue of luke in dublin RIP LUKE THE LEGEND
Just substitute old Joe Hill for every man woman and child in America. The government has trumped up charges on you all and you were found guilty, citing you dont deserve your freedom or rights because there may be a terrorist lurking among good honest citizens. Therefore you all have lost your rights and freedoms, you just dont know yet. Joe died for what he believed in and that is the reason such a mild song can bring such strong emotions.
