There is no "right" or "best" version of this song. It's been around for at least before the Civil War and has been done and redone 1000's of times with just as many versions of the lyrics. No one is even certain just when it was written or who wrote it...or just what the original lyrics were. So IMO all versions are good. If nothing else, it keeps this great tune alive and kicking.
Yes, this is the best version of this song and all the rest falls short of the feeling from the heart when you hear it. I wouldn't care if this was played at my funeral. And everone got up and danced. And yes I am a Christian.
This is the best version of this song I have ever heard. It is either the original that played in the movie "Places in the heart". or by his sons. I understand that the man that played in the movie committed suicide. That is so sad to me because the was THE #1 talented banjo/fiddle player ever!
@Savemefromhelen Actually NO it doesn't. This is a fine version and if you like more traditional Country Music sure you'll like and even prefer it. But the Rednex version is great. It's upbeat, fun, and gets people moving and has become an American Classic. Don't be on old stodgy who thinks everything older which came first is better. If not for the Rednex version I'd never have gotten interested enough to even search out this verson.
@skierbarry The Rednex are a bunch of Swedes singing a song out of the belly of America. They don't understand the lyrics. That's why the song is "upbeat and fun." If an American wants to sing about how he gave his life to his employer and have fun dancing to it, it's one thing. Another for a Swede to sing this as if he were ridiculously happy.

@lilsuperkid2020 - Amen, sister! Why be sad? Let the dead bury the dead. The rest of us, get up and party. Death is a promotion. Why not celebrate?
