  • You would think they would throw their stuff down so it can Keep hitting the chariots and maybey make them flip

  • @mariomario9595 Good idea, let's throw away our shield and swords. Oh wait, now we are sitting ducks.

  • @InnerSentry fear is not equal to logic. Anyways 30soldiers(who recently fought a battle?) against 10+ chariots. Theres a limitid number of steps u can take before u get runned over.

Now I do not know when this movie is taking place. But saying that the Romans had tactics against chariots does not mean that they had those tactics during the 1200years of Rome.

  • Now I have to find COOLrunnings369's comment :/

  • @AliiiiLewis Don't bother, it's probably something stupid and related to CoD somehow.

  • @Nitoryuu Or not.

  • @AliiiiLewis It's not hard to find. Basically, he points out that there are many Roman strategies for dealing with chariots and that the Centurion doomed his men by ordering them to run.

  • Yeah! LOL! Now that you mention it.... The movie though was awfully casted! The dresses tough were good, the loricas, the gladii and the pila

  • Awful movie, but good historically!

  • @TheYu87 except the scyted chariot part lol and some other parts in the movie.

  • Channing Tatum is this generation's most overrated and hired actor.

  • CENTURION IS SO MUCH BETTER!!

  • urban conhort :P

  • fools the only good thing about the roman army is its organization and discipline.

  • @attackmike Yeah mate that is utter bullshit right there.

  • I liked this film.

  • they have the fucking big shields and like a whole battalion yet run away from a few chariots, thats why Spartacus owned the Romans.

  • sythed wheels never existed they make no sense....dangerous to your own men and if you hit something with the sythe that does not give it would turn the chariot round violently throwing the passengers out.

in hollywood the the battlefields are always flatas well but if you ever visit one the terrain is mixed and rarely much use for cariots, their more skirmish troops and spear platforms.

  • These guys need a lesson from Russel Crowe on how to stop a chariot =P

  • 0:59 THIS IS SPARTA.

  • that was pretty sweet

  • Why not just throw their pila and be done with it.

  • Channing <3

  • this movie wasnt as good as i thought it would be kinda disappointing but the movie centurian was faboulouse

  • ROMANS WOULD HAVE NEVER RETREATED THIS MOVIE IS A FAKE

  • @MySecretWeapon77 Its a MOVIE. Movies are not supposed to be 100% historically accurate. Calm. the fuck. down.

  • When are we going to accept that Channing Tatum can't act?

  • Deeply disappointed with this film. too much detail lost from the book that renders this versions plot gormless. In every way tailored for an American audience.

  • Romans suck. GREEKS RULE!

  • @SithScumSlayer1138 Fuck the Greeks they are all fagots rome fucked even the superior spartans

  • Our men are running from the battlefield! A SHAMEFURR DISPRAY!

  • ABANDON UR POSTS RUN FOR UR MISERABLE LIVESSS

  • There is way to handle those er...(Is it war wagon?) by using a shield formation which could be successful with their shield. Although many Asian Soldiers used flat Rectangle shield, but could have maneuvered it at 90% at best. What you do is to send 6 shield regiments, and then form a 6 circles and when they come closer, you lay down in the ground and those wagons run across it, and when that happens the soldiers lift their shields up. Which can do same thing with spear, but without Casualty.

  • @Xyeho

That sounds a bit too sophisticated even for me. As I understand it a wall of spears will repel most horses. But remember, this was before the all-important advent of the stirrup and the ascendance of the cavalryman on the field of battle.

  • @pinz2022 What part of my strategy is sophisticated for you? This shield formation was done by my Ancestor Daemusin of Goguryeo. During the war with Dongbuyeo, he fought with their war wagons, which was very similar to these war wagons, and manuevered great victory with the shield formation. Spears might work against horse, but it works better with shield and less casualties, someone can use kamikaze style if you know what I mean.

  • the greek armos is much better thean the roman HOPLITTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol why are they fighting old farmers

  • @theend1245 they are fighting the Britons (barbarians) who inhabited present day Great Britain

  • why would roman infantry run away from chariots, if they had seperated into cohorts and left 3 meter gaps between the horses will naturally run into the gaps regardless of what the drivers do. then you can kill the men on the back with a spear or bow, that is what alexander the great did at the battle of isis. those scythe blades on the chariot wheels are only affective against light infantry of dumb asses running away like these guys.

  • @COOLrunnings369 chariots not involved as much at issus as it was over quite quickly. Tactic more so used at gaugamlea. As for romans, good example is with the elephants of hannibal as well as his chariots.

  • @COOLrunnings369 Exactly!

  • @COOLrunnings369

why not just get some skilled archers and pick them one by one?

even a neatly thrown pilum will do a good gob

  • @COOLrunnings369 Excuse me have u ever been in a war? Have u ever had a chariot comming towards u? There is something called fear... And many times did soldiers fall back because they got scared.

  • They didn't run because they feared the chariot (elite Roman legionnaire in fear?), they ran because they knew their tactical disadvantage

  • @sangyuni96 Yes they got feard. They were men of flesh n blood u know.. During some period every tenth of a roman soldier was killed when they run from battle by theire officers in attempt to make less soldiers run from battle.

  • Romans went up against armored Elephants in Carthage Army and won. Do you think they would be afraid of hillbillies on chariots?

  • @sangyuni96 Well according to what I have read the reason why chartago used war elephants against the romans was because it frightend off the enemy from the battle, war elephants themself were not so good in battle and highly unpredictable. And the romans tactics against war elephants was to scare them.

  • @Uuuurk The Roman tactic was to step out of the way. When a elephant was charging, they would break formation and the elephant would run right through them. Than they would scare them

  • @siegeghost100 as i wrote the romans tactics was to scare them yes...

  • @COOLrunnings369 that is inposible here because the chariots formation was to tight

  • @COOLrunnings369 its hard to think of that strategy, when a huge chariot is running towards you....

  • @prooijtje I think he's just trying to sound smart. This was actually a famous battle strategy used by Alexander the Great in the battle of Gaugamela, when Macedonians came up againts King Darius' charriots.

  • @prooijtje The actual historical Romans didn't seem to have any trouble, they even used it on charging elephants, much more fearsome than shitty wee British chariots. They opened channels in their formation and the elephants instinctively moved through them, getting pelted with javelins as they went and at the end of these channels was a group of triarii armed with extra long spears to finish the elephants off...

  • @Kiwis4life indeed they did, but before that they fled the field when elephants would charge, it took a long time to adapt to those elephants and your strategy sounds good, but it takes a lot of time to set up for such a defense

  • @prooijtje It didn't take as long as you think. Every aristocratic Roman had to study historical military practise as strategy and then serve compulsory military service as a tribune. They had so many great minds working on strategies constantly. And yes they may have fled when they faced the elephants of Carthage for their first few battles but by the time the Romans fought the British their soldiers were developed into the famous legionnaire. Legionnaires would...

  • @prooijtje ...stand against anything and their commanders would adapt incredibly quickly to any situation. By this time in history the Romans had faced basically anything they could so their commanders, who had to study every military doctrine and strategy from the past, knew everything to do in most situations.

  • @Kiwis4life but just like now, you can learn as much as you want, but in a real fight the panic might always get to you, there were of course commanders that would adapt rapidly, but not all of them did

  • @prooijtje True, Rome wasn't renowned for its commanders, aside from Gaius Julius Caesar and Gaius Suetonius Paulinus, it was renowned for its soldiers. Roman soldiers don't retreat unless ordered because they are drilled that way and they know they will be decimated. They had incredibly high morale and pride. Fear wasnt that apparent in experienced Roman soldiers. They knew they had the best armour, weapons, strategies, skills and strength of any army. What was there to be afraid of?

  • @Kiwis4life the general started running so everyone started running

  • @mitzitwo Yes and that is why this movie is weird. The centurion should have had enough experience to know that retreating is going to get many of his men killed and only save a few without causing any casualties on the enemy. Standing their ground the Romans could have easily repelled using the strategies I mentioned earilier.

  • @Kiwis4life a nuclear weapon obviusly =DDD

  • @elgerrerometin2 Lol, they'd just credit that to the Gods, XD

  • @prooijtje they where trained for those situatuons

  • @Voicua training is nothing like a real fight

  • @prooijtje Roman's were the most disciplined soldiers in those times...they had very high moral and were shock resistant (in terms of sudden change in battle conditions and ambush)

  • @TIZ012 it was a long time ago and like every army, there are always the more weak soldiers, you could say the US has the most disciplined army atm, but that doesnt mean that all soldiers have the same discipline

  • @prooijtje

Then again these guys weren't scrubs like in this scene. They were trained military men that were aware of what they're up against.

  • @prooijtje that is very true if you had a chose of running from a creepy guy on a chariot who wants to kill you and running ..... lets just say you would run

  • @prooijtje In theory just hit one of the horses whit a spear or something ranged, the other horse can't take both the chariot and a dead horse agonizing. Yeah sure it needs a nice amount of cool blood and skill, plus you have to prey horses are not harnessed.

  • @prooijtje no, there is a strategy. Place your shields on the sides so the wheels don't stab the soldiers, duck behind the shields and through spears at the riders and when they come close enough or ride past the soldiers, take them out from behind.

Alexander the Great came long before Rome and he was brighter than these guys.

  • @Volts48 like i have told a million people by now, it is really hard to think of a strategy like that and to get the men to follow your example in such a short amount of time, alexander was prepared for such an attack and instructed his soldiers before the battle

  • @prooijtje moving to the fucking side is not that hard, especially after Alexander already did it like 500 years ago

  • @princeofiron but,,not like ROME

  • @princeofiron it is when a chariot is racing towards you and the other men are already running away...

  • @COOLrunnings369

    maybe the leaders jsut sucked.

or they missed out on training camp.

  • @COOLrunnings369 Alexander the Greats Army had a Phalanx those Romans did not have Spears only Pila which would be useless as a spear as it is mainly a one use weapon and a Gladius a short Stabbing Sword the Horses would run right through them

  • @COOLrunnings369 Huh! Who would have the nerve to stand against a 2000 ibs horse and chariot?? cohort or not, these things would probably smash trough everything in their way.

  • @COOLrunnings369 You average Roman soldier would not have known the tactics that Alexander the Great's army used. Most would have never seen chariots before, and the sight of these unfamiliar weapons would have panicked them.

  • @fourganger88

Good thing they have officers then.

  • @Jmonstra "officers" did not fight on the front lines, they communicated with their troops via trumpet signals and banners. They could issue simple commands only, and would not have had the time to tell their troops the exact way to defeat chariots. Centurions were the only sort of leadership these guys had on the front lines, but they would have started out as rank-and-file, most were probably illiterate, so they wouldn't have known Alexander's tactics either.

  • @fourganger88 no roman soldier was illiterate. and thats a fact every soldier needed to be able to read and write so to understand written orders? officers not fighting on the frontline? well yes you are correct they rarely fought on the frontline i can give examples of several generals who did tho when they were forced ofcourse. not starting a discussion lol just wanted to let you know that.

  • @COOLrunnings369 Brosef, this is hollywood, calm ur tits.

  • @COOLrunnings369 but the chariots isnt the only danger they are there to smash up the ranks and create panic before the infantery is coming so they would be surrounded and then killed

  • @COOLrunnings369 indeed. Alexander did that in the Battle of Gaugemala. running away like these soldiers is the WURST THING u can do. an running army is at its weakest of all. Alexander's tactic was great but also in Braveheart where the Scotmen rise the huge spears against the Cavalry.

  • @COOLrunnings369 A Roman cohort counts around the 480 Legionairs, I am not even seeing 100 Legionairs on this battlefield, so that tactic only works with small squads of 8 men ( Contubernia) around here ...

  • @COOLrunnings369 They might not have had the tough, metal shields needed to resist a chariot attack.

  • THEY'RE SPEAKING ENGLISH. THIS IS BULLSHIT.

  • The Picts never used any of those chariot things, and running away from cavalry like that is completely retarded.

  • @JesusDiedROFL Are you retarded? The Picts were notorious for using chariots against the Romans. Another thing you fail to understand is shock tactics. Chariots and Cavalry would be used to smash into enemy lines; killing the enemy with the momentum.

  • Where's the Pilum and why is that legionaries using that sword on that way?...The sword should be on the side of the Scutum, not on that way... Fucking Hollywood...

  • @Huma270490 "fucking hollywood" did it right... the sword was on the right side

  • @xxCpxxDr0n3 THe Sword was on the right side of the Scutum, not over it. Wearing their swords on that way they can hit the enemy just moving a bit the Scutum, protecting your body and only exposing a bit. Look for old paints and books about that and you could see that they're wearing their Gladius on the Side, not upon the scutum

  • @Huma270490 excuse me where so you see the sword over the scutum??? they have the sword on their right thigh and it's the right position!

  • @xxCpxxDr0n3 I Agree with you, the right position is on the right side, not upon the shield, but on the 0:14 you can see the mistake.

  • @Huma270490 ahhhhhhhhhhh I now get what you meant! I thought you meant that the sword was over the scutum when it was in the sheath, that's why it didn't make sense! yes yes you were right then, they had it on the right to strike easily and from a more protected position :) at 0.14 they probably filmed it that way because it's a cool stance :P

  • @xxCpxxDr0n3 Hollywood logic:

    Style > Realistic, ¡ Hahaha!

  • @Huma270490 someway they have to justify the money they make don't they ;P

  • That centurion is such a dumbass, the last thing you do when fighting calvalry is run away!

  • @Jc40k1 The Chariots would have demolished the Roman lines if the had stood their ground.

  • where is there fucking pilum?! Theyre suppose to use that against cavalry forces!

    DAMN YOU HOLLYWOOD!

  • @crackshack2 the pilum wasn't to be used against cavalry... it would have broken itself. they used it just for throwing most of the times, but only against soldiers on foot!

  • Comment removed

  • @xxCpxxDr0n3

Pretty sure real roman legionnaires used the pilum as an anti cavalry weapon. If you don't believe me look up Arrian's Array Against the Alans.

Not to mention they could have thrown their pilum at the horses anyways!!!! X.X

  • He looks like a jock not a centurion

  • you guys really need to stop hating on the movie. who cares if the movie is accurate or not?...it doesnt matter. its actually impossible to know if anything is accurate from this far back. so just relax, and enjoy the movie like it was intended for!

  • @TheVaultboy325 you didnt conquor the known world by running form your foe.

  • @0Zolrender0 you also didn't win by crappy grammar use :)

  • @TheVaultboy325 it was a great movie so who cares? Also i think it was quite accurate, atleast the enviorment.

  • @elon555 i agree....im supporting that it WAS an excellent movie.

  • @TheVaultboy325 They can get close, by using actual tactics, actual weapons. Instead of stainless steel katanas for Romans. Hey, why the hell not, we don't know if they truly had assault rifles back then. Let's give the Roman's AK-47s.

  • @TheVaultboy325 By your logic they should just have the roman ride giraffes in that scene. I mean its actually impossible to know if anything is accurate from back then right? That would make the movie way more entertaining just like it was intended for.

  • @Longmachao you mad bro?

  • @TheVaultboy325 just making a point...

  • @Longmachao i know..i understand where your coming from....you got to ask yourself in thsi scene...what would the romans do besides retreating?....theyre outnumbered to begin with, and you can really sidestep a chariot...so its like theyre only logical option.

  • @TheVaultboy325

    oh do shut up.

People dedicate LIVES to research it and this movie just ruins all their work, because dumbass kids will rather watch a movie than look into any facts.

Like ask any 18 year old average person what do they know about Ancient Rome and then ask for sources and most will be - err.. I read something on Wikipedia, played Total war and watched few movies.

Making movies properly is ESSENTIAL for movie industry. Unless you want to add "sci-fi" stamp

  • @TheVaultboy325

There are numerous treatises both by the Romans themselves and their enemies detailing their tactics. Roman infantry never ever retreated from battle against chariots. Chariots were obsolete military equipment by 1000 B.C.

  • @TheVaultboy325 agreed

  • Wouldn't the Romans stand their ground against chariots? Just wandering.

  • The movie didnt go in depth like the book did but it was still really good.

  • im sorry but channing tatum looks like a walking fart.

  • Comment removed

  • Billy Eliot?

  • if they wouldve stod their ground and formation they couldve stopped them

  • PEOPLE PEOPLE...Jesus H fucking CHRIST IT'S A FUCKIN MOVIE.

As Penn would say....Ahem... SHUT. THE FUCK. UP.

  • I'm impressed...most of the people here know better than this film. One not pointed out yet as far as I can see is the blatant lack of Roman disciplline. 'Fall back' was actually a crime punishible by death.

  • @SummitTwelve Good comment - they just can't make a good movie about early European history - if its the Vikings or English (especially Anglo-Saxon England ) we are made to look like cavemen with no real culture or evil psychopaths who don't understand that they are in a Romanized world - look at Arthur of Beowulf movies or Braveheart - god forbid they make a film about Hengest & Horsa creating England - they will portray us as butchers rather than the politically astute generals!

  • @SummitTwelve The Romans normally won not because of their weapons but discipline & tactical flexibility & their engineering & logistics at a strategic level - they could of formed square or shiltron or orb - "run away" - its like something out of Monty Python!

I've just seen an epic video on Roman engineering I will send it to you.

    All the best

    David

  • @infokemp: Shiltron only works with spears, square had not been developed as a tactic yet and would likely be nothing against a chariot.

  • @Schmidtah I will refer you to the Roman Army Manual by Vegitus - which is based on the early works of people like Marius & Scipio Africanus who used the tactics I described - the orb, as you said would of been more effective with stout spears, pikes or pole arms, as you said - but the orb used the points of the Roman Pila as a psychological as well as physical barrier which the horses would instinctively avoid - just like the British Square at Waterloo - it relied more on fear.

  • @infokemp: The Roman Pila had a tip designed to break upon impact so they could not be used against the Romans.

  • @Schmidtah No, it would bend so if it got stuck on your enemies shield it would come out making the shield useless.

  • @CodeAwsome: So it breaks? It becomes useless=breaking.

  • @Schmidtah No a shield wouldn't break. It would inbalance the shield and make it heavier, because of it bending it would also be hard to remove, especially during battle.

  • @Spartiatai300: I don't think the Romans had the capability to have javelins that only bend on the opposite side of a shield.

  • @Schmidtah The Pilum would get stuck after it penetrated the shield, because of the narrow shaft the thin metal would bend. Making it hard to get out and a bit useless to trow back. Pilums were also used as a anti-cavalry weapon, so basicly using it as a spear, at least I heard something about it.

  • @infokemp and to me please

  • @mattg109 ? - sorry could you explain to me what you are replying to.

    All the best

    David

  • How can this be so wrong, everything is historically inaccurate in this clip. I dont even....

  • mistake #1 - fall back... lol

  • this movie is very historical inaccurate the romans would of thrown their pillum ( spears ) to take out the chariots

  • This was one of the worst researched films I have ever seen. How could a centurion (his father) command/be blamed for the loss of an entire legion? The most centurions could command was a cohort.

  • @commentator46 Pretty sure his father was a Praetor or Tribune.

  • @Triplicarius it says his father was a centurion commanding the cohort with the eagle.

  • The Romans had some of the most cool looking armor and weapons in history. :)

  • @ela1191 no that were the nazis :D

  • @ela1191 romans are history...:)

  • @ela1191 not to mention the romans were bad ass

  • @ela1191 especially at skyrim !!!!!!!!!

  • @ela1191 Of course...celtic helmet, celtic shield, celtic sword, arabian bows, greek armor..add some little tuning to each and you are looking at roman soldier

  • @Aronther You're just jealous you didn't think up Roman armor first. :P

  • @ela1191 The truth is that the Romans took the best parts of equipment and tactics of nations they conquered.

  • @ela1191

the greek armor is much more cool

  • @10guitarpro The Hoplite helmets are better than the standard Roman helmet, but their actual armour is shit compared to this kind of Roman armour.

  • @ela1191 Indeed.

  • ugh! The Britons NEVER used scythed chariots, nor did they use Roman style chariots, theirs were agile lightweight transports for bringing and retrieving high status warriors to and from battle quickly. Romans never fought the Picts either. They fought Northern Britons and Caledonians. The Pictii rose to power just as the Romans left this septic isle and lived north of the Mounth at the time this film is set. The accuracy is so bad you would think it was an American film!

  • @2112forfour You're wrong! They borrowed from Arab sheikhs to have them custom made in Japan! With German suspension!

  • @2112forfour hey! not all american films are bad! ...depending on what the movie is suppose to be about... like... the Patriot! it was an American movie, and %95 of the people liked it. other %5 were british who hated how we pictured some of the british soldiers and leaders.

  • @Skykilla21 so that is 5% who are right to be upset that a really decent light cavalry officer was profaned by that useless Aussie. Apart from that, as entertainment it was a good film.

  • @2112forfour exactly! lol

  • Moral of the story, never fuck with a Centurion

  • Ah. So by "battle scene", the uploader of this video clearly means "Fifty guys fleeing and ONE guy fighting"-scene.

    How epic.

  • wow this movie sucks how come the centurion doesnt command a manuvuer just like the one from gladiator

  • who the fuck tries to outrun a chariot? what a retard.

  • @xtrucky: Would you rather stand in a tightly-packed group of Legionaries with unarmored legs? Scythed chariots would go through them like a hot knife in butter.

  • Centurions didn't command legions. They commanded centuries. Generals, often nobles commanded legions.
