  • *supposed to be a children's film! There is nothing wrong with an adult enjoying a children's film but to slaughter the man who created it because they didn't like it as much as the ones they saw eighteen years ago-give him a break!

  • I think this is very harsh! George Lucas made some changes but didn't intend to "ruin" people's lives! Many of the younger fans will prefer the prequels because George Lucas wanted to make a film for children! When many fans first saw The Star Wars or now A New Hope-they were kids! Adults just can't admit that Star Wars was made for children and is supposedly

  • Oh wow.... you actually made fun and a joke about child rape.

    You are one DISGUSTING person.

  • Comment removed

  • @Deltarogers Therefore you like the films for explosions and lasers, not characters/writing.

The prequels were objectively awful, as the top commenter said, watch the plinkett redlettermedia reviews if you really think they were good movies. Each prequel gets a one and a half hour review that shows how horrendous the writing, plot, continuity, and cinematography were in the prequels. The first three films were only good because George's ideas were kept under control by much smarter people.

  • @Deltarogers No. A person who is incapable of recognizing the horrendous choices made during the film's production is like a Christian who can't recognize scientific evidence and facts. The new trilogy was made purely for money, there was no creativity. I can't understand how anyone could respect a film that has no characters and a shit plot.

  • People are just way over protective of the original star wars. Like the special editions with new content. The later versions with CGI made it far better and some of the new scenes were fun. It hardly changed anything

  • people are such bitches about the prequels. The prequels were awesome i dont see what was so ridiculous about mediclorians. Same with jar jar binks hes comic relief same with c-3PO and R2-D2. There just goofy counterparts that exist for some fun in tense moments. 4 5 and 6 were awesome but honestly 1 2 and 3 were better. Way more emotional and engaging than the older ones. To each there own but people just nit pick way too much, be open minded to new ideas goin with an open mind ull likeit

  • star wars is the best movie ever

  • I'd like to see The People vs George Lucas.

I hope that eventually the Original Versions of The Star Wars Trilogy will be restored in HD for Blu-Ray.

I did not purchase The Star Wars Films on Blu-Ray.

  • haters movie pfff

  • hahaha jerked off and made your child hood watch, dam!

  • I love this guy. I subbed

  • star wars is dead. at long last.

  • It's not called irony for becoming something that you are trying to avoid, it's called hypocrisy.

  • lmfao!

the ending was the best part

  • Eww.

  • This was sort of like the HBO version of our usual beloved Jonathan Kim ... still gorgeous and thought-provoking, but yet pointlessly vulgar.

  • The crimes he's committed against his fans? Get over yourselves. Few artists will ever create work that will be even a fraction as significant to American culture & film culture as Lucas. What these children have done is take the grating experience of reading internet talk-backs of disaffected cynics bitching about everything & translate it into a film. The sad thing is that they'll probably never understand what it's like to actually create something of real substance themselves.

  • I think I''ll wait for the 3D version of this movie. It probably needs a lot more Boba Fett as well.

  • I don't have any problem with the artist being in charge, but he shouldn't be allowed to exist in a bubble, especially if you're talking about a phenomenon. And he should take into account the things that his biggest fans are saying even if he thinks they're invalid, but should only dismiss them if he can explain why. A kind of culture trial. Unwritten rules. And George Lucas didn't rape your childhood, or fucking make it watch, your childhood is over...

  • Did anyone ever mention the plinkett reviews in this movie?

  • I think there's a lot going on in subtext and backstory in George's mind that he just fucks up in the writing process. or just forgets important shit like he [pretty much forgot to have a scene where Anakin tells Obi- hey I want you to give this lightsaber to my son if I die. All they did was a pick-up shot of Obi picking up the hilt. "Your father wanted you to have this" is a bit of stretch now isn't it Obi?

  • I meant to say "When Yoda says 'I have failed' "

  • see if George were a good writer he would have used that stuff as the reason why Anakin falls- the fact that the way that the Jedi Order indoctrinates younglings is almost immoral- ripping a child away from his/her mother at an early age. I think it was there in half-assed subtext because when says "I have failed" he doesn't just mean he lost the fight with Palpy. I think he also meant that the Jedi Order which he was(being 800 yrs old) one of the founders of. George should show us Yoda's past

  • Force Sensitive was always heretitary. Luke and Leia were born with it. Some like Han and Lando are not but they seem to be gifted with Luck and good pilot skill. Some like Jabba and Watto are Force-resistant meaning they can block mind-tricks. Jedi Order in the Prequels is that the elders use midiclorian count to test newborns and indoctrinate them into the Jedi Order before they are "too old" that's the part people should have a problem. TJO are actually part of the problem (to be con'd)

  • the star wars prequals were obviously not good but is it really a bad thing that they were created. i actually think its better that they exist because it expands the franchise provides the true fans with more characters more game franchises etc. its gives them more to enjoy. just not the films

  • T-Shirt: "I may die a virgin, but at least I know that Greedo shot first and that George Lucas raped my childhood."

  • Yes, Kim, he made your childhood watch. He put a gun to your head and said, "Watch as I pull out my pink lightsaber and stroke it. The force is strong with me... Oops! I shot first, and I'm not talking about the gun I have at your head." I think the saddest part of this review is when you actually say it's worse than the Catholic-pedofile scandal... Wow... No, you fucktards made it that way. I cannot express how truly apeshit you people went over something as trivial as Greedo shooting first.

  • @arthereld I actually think what's more accurate is "tricked your childhood into watching", but I wanted to honor the joke as I heard it ;-).

  • I was a kid when the phantom menace came out and i thought the movie was amazing and I probably got the same feeling you got when you guys watched the originals. I am 21 now and all I can say is get over it. Your time has passed I hate to break it ya but your not a kid anymore and nothing will make you feel the same as when you first saw the first trilogy. For me getting to watch the second trilogy in theaters was a big part of my childhood.

  • I don't care what anybody says, the first three movies aren't good.

  • Everyone go to REDLETTERMEDIA's channel and go watch the reviews on each prequel. I think it could change your mind and show you exactly why they are really horrible films, in general and as Star Wars.

  • @insaneapples Who is everyone? The people who actually like the prequels are in the minority. We're the ones who are afraid to enter a chatroom or forum and say we actually like the prequels and yes, dare I say it, the Special editions of episodes 4, 5, 6. The moment we do you assholes bring out your flamethrower and start shoving "Greedo shot first!" and "Jar Jar is a racist character" down our throats.

  • @insaneapples I am NOT a Star Wars fan, though I do not dislike the films, I've never really seen the big deal. But those reviews of the prequels are genius. Maybe a bit nitpicky in *few* places, but they're mostly brilliant, and sum up the big turn in personality between the original, and the new trilogy. Watch it, even if you just want to see a hilariously executed wildly intellectual analysis of a film franchise.

  • @insaneapples The problem with any review that points out just how horrible the prequels were is that IF someone were to approach the original trilogy with EXACTLY the same amount of harsh critical examination aiming to overblow every problem then the originals too were really horrible films.

From the laughability of an Empire ruling using soldiers who can't shoot to the total inconsistency regarding what Jedi can actually do, the original films were trash if one is critical.

  • @TheHobgoblyn No, the original films were not trash by comparison. That's probably the stupidest argument I've ever heard. So if the prequels are bad, then that means all Star Wars films are bad? Good luck with that one.

  • @insaneapples That's not what I was saying. But people are HYPER critical about things in the prequel movies and yet naustalgia stops them, and likely you, from seeing that many of the SAME issues existed in the original movies.

Characters often acting unbearably stupid, badly connected and advanced storylines that relied on the audience knowing things not even in the movies, plot twists straight out of "The Young and the Restless". If you were to choose to be critical of them, it is easy to be

  • @TheHobgoblyn First, virtually none of the "flaws" you just stated about the original three films are used by critics of the prequels. Second, your choice of flaws is subjective (to what you feel is "acting unbearably stupid" and ignorant (badly connected and 'advanced' storylines??), and also demonstrates your lack of knowledge about star wars and films in general. Nobody is being "hyper critical" about the prequels. They are simply just bad films and a bad representation of Star Wars.

  • @insaneapples Okay, consider this.

Consider in the first film-- beyond the Stormtroopers being wholely inept, Obiwan demonstrates the ability of mind-control-- which he never uses again despite there being multiple occasions to do so. Obiwan also waves around a lightsaber in a public place filled with bounty hunters with no consequences.

The explaination of the relationship between Obiwan and Anakin is inconsistent.

The Biggs character and his relationship with Luke comes out of no where.

  • @TheHobgoblyn I'm sorry but you're rather confused. There isn't enough space in these comments for me to explain all this to you, nor do I wish to anyway. Maybe some day in the future someone can sit down with you and walk you through it.

  • @insaneapples haha...Mr Plinket is awesome..

  • @insaneapples You're not kiddin', pal. I mean, I knew the films were bad, I KNEW that, but it wasn't until I watched each and every one one RLM's reviews that I UNDERSTOOD that I had missed not just five or six bad moments per film, but literally innumerable instances of inaccuracies, stumbles, contradictions, and just plain bad choices in final editing/scripting/direction. Plinkett's reviews are truly eye-opening, and should be seen by people who've both condemned the films & accepted them.

  • The Catholic Church scandal comparison was. . . well, if you ever need an example for hyperbole, maybe use something more subtle than this.

  • I don't care what anyone says, I adore the prequels!! They served the purpose they were meant to!

  • @MrAlexbradley Really, really sad.

  • @MrAlexbradley I agree. In my opinion the prequels only suffered in one respect, people had up to twenty odd years to imagine what they would be like and the movies (for some) didn't hold up to their imaginings. That and a slight lack of suspense in that you knew the story long before you watched the movie, Anikan becomes a Jedi, has 2 kids, falls to the dark side, and makes sure the Jedi are all but extinct. Still very enjoyable films though.

  • @TheDrpretorious Exactly! It wasn't about WHAT was going to happen, but HOW it would all connect in the end. I was crying like a bitch at the end of III, because I knew that the story was over, and because of how beautifully it led right into IV!

  • @MacMaraScott It's both good and bad that the most poignant moments in the Star Wars world now come from the Clone Wars cartoon. And it's no surprise that some of the episodes are good despite Lucas' participation.

  • why isnt Kim in the roundtable more often?!?..hes the best critic after Christy in WTF

  • @rainmaker2012 Because he goes to see a movie called Thor expecting a comedy.

  • @InsideTheMirror Wrong. I thought the comedy parts were the only parts of THOR that worked well.

  • Jonathan Kim, I liked you before but I love you now.

  • I loved the prequels, didn't like the originals. I'm 20 is that a generational thing.

  • @JOEDERAS08 Nope. You just have really bad taste.

  • i liked the prequels! why does everyone hate them so much? i'm not a big star wars fan but i liked all the movies and that includes the prequels.

  • frig your reviews are awesome!

  • Star Wars fans are picky bitches. Sure Episode I was shitty but II and III were not bad. They also place IV, V and VI too highly.

  • true art can never be owned by anyone or anything, not the fans, not the creator, not the company that owns the rights. True art is as immaterial as it is real.

  • That was actually an excellent review..........for once >_>

  • Meh, the problem here is that star wars was the last good space opera. Or the only one. Give the world another good space opera and all the issues people have with star wars go away.

    Good review, Jonathan.

  • @godthisisannoying Legend of the Galactic Heroes. As one reviewer put it, the "true" Star Wars. Not as fun or as action packed as Star Wars, but a grand cast of characters spanning over 100 episodes. Political intrigue up the wazoo.

It's an anime, though, that's a bit low-budget and greatly dated animation. So if you are not into that kind of thing, it's totally understandable.

  • @deadpisser88 thanks for the tip. I believe I watched it a long time ago, not sure. Anime, or 99.999% of all animation, is still missing the broad appeal of a live-action movie and still subject to the seemingly unavoidable stereotype of "cartoons are for kids". So, in a way, I stand by my assertion that SW was the last space opera - as acknowledged by the majority of the audience -, although I concede your point :) It's a pity the way things are, because in book format space opera is thriving.

  • @godthisisannoying I haven't read much space operas in book format, not even the Star Wars novels (although Legend of the Galactic Heroes was based on the book series of the same name; never properly translated in english, sadly). Feel free to drop some good series.

Well, I don't worry about broad appeal. Just what I think will attract me. A good portion of Anime, even if it suffers that stereotype, is clearly targeted towards adults. If people don't realize that, then they are clearly ignorant

  • damn star wars fans are such losers...go get laid you pathetic bums

  • Prequels

1- Amazingly boring and hollow. Lifeless and not even any epic moments.

2- Still hollow but starts to get more enjoyable with at least some decent action and effects.

3- I thought it was awesome. Great action, solid acting, solid emotion, epic, etc. Of course the original trilogy is still the best.

  • @metaitachi dude not trying to say Phantom is any good at all but darth maul is the best star wars villain, and he was epic.....just sayin

  • @MadPuppets1 He was cool looking but i wouldnt say hes the best villain because we literally new nothing about him :/. Cool design, but hollow like the rest of the movie. Darth Vader is the best villain because he has a cool design and awesome backstory and all.

  • @metaitachi Ok Darth Vader is the best villain I will concede that, but only for his importance to the story. But nothing new is a bit far, I mean every star wars fan got giddy when he pulled out the double bladed lightsaber.

  • @MadPuppets1 Well yeah but he only had the cool factor. No backstory/depth :(

  • @metaitachi True True, but thats Lucas' fault.

  • @MadPuppets1 Darth Maul definitely looked like a badass, especially with his double lightsaber. But if he was such a badass, he wouldn't have died in such a dumb way.

  • @jsjkim Because Lucas can't write for shit anymore....lol Boba and Jango went out like punks too soo....

  • no offense to fans of the series, but i personally don't care about star wars.

  • A really interesting video.

  • someone who makes a great film doesnt owe you another one.

then again, crapping on the prequels is a good time, i wouldnt begrudge anyone that. the doc looks really interesting.

  • Im sorry but to me the prequels felt like George inserted a traffic-cone into my rectum thrugh the delicacy of a drunk driver running into a concrete levy.

It was a vulgar act of violence.

  • Jonathan Kim is so bad-ass that when he accidentally hit Chuck Norris with his car, Chuck Norris apologized for standing in his way.

  • Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skullfuck

  • MichelAngelo and Leonardo would change their artwork multiple times so I can understand Lucas wanting to change or add to his masterpieces. The new trilogy is a different matter altogether.

  • What happened to Lucas happens to the vast majority of formerly great creative people. He grew old and out of touch.

There is a reason Eddie Murphy is no longer a king of Comedy, Michael Jackson fell from glory, and Madonna is a shell of her former self. When you age with that much money, it's nearly impossible to connect with your audience, much less understand them. Lucas couldn't make the original trilogy today if he tried.

  • @shalcall He should donate all his money and try to make a brand new franchise with no funding of his own. ;)

  • @LicoriceLain I was thinking the other day how STAR WARS could've been like STAR TREK, or maybe even the James Bond movies, with stories continuing for years and different directors taking the helm and putting their spin on it. Could've really been something. Wonder if there will ever be a STAR WARS reboot...

  • The Phantom Menace was great! Just like Gigli.

  • @Treulos365 Yeah right and Jar Jar is a classic character. Phantom Menace sucked.

  • @captcrais101

Since you took me seriously I'm guessing you never heard of Gigli.

  • this is hilarious lol, when he describes himself, sounds just like Anakin.

  • I liked American Grafitti, and sorta liked the old Star Wars movies. The prequel trilogy left me cold. Hey, they're just movies, who cares?

  • am i the only one that thinks that the midichlorian idea actually made sense? a scientific explanation of how lifeforms are connected to the Force. rather than it's just some mystical thing out there that's never explained,

  • @concord327

What I liked about the original concept of the Force was how it was an energy that anyone who was willing enough to put in the hard work, effort, and understanding could attain. The new explanation kind of says "eh, you're just born with it."

  • I agree 100% of what Jon is saying about Lucas. I mean this guy came up with the Star Wars trilogies and Indiana Jones then craped on them by making the other Star Wars trilogies and making the Indiana Jones Crystal Skull movie... What the fuck happened to him!? I don't care if he became the corporate power house he did. I'm just concerned that he has lost his vision. Sad really.

  • J Kim is legend!

  • episode three was brilliant

  • j kim is better than the 2 fat brothers and ben combined!

  • Ive never seen any of the Star Wars movies. Never wanted to, probably never will.

  • @Pozorrogo I was like that too for the longest time, then I watched all 6 of them. I think the original trilogy is good but nothing that makes go crazy about, Lord of the Rings however, is another story:)

  • @Hyman74Roth At one point, i made the STAR WARS/LOTR comparison with my brother. He brought up the good point that LOTR doesn't have the sense of fun SW has. LOTR is awfully dark, and not really the kind of thing you want to watch when drunk/high on a sat. night.

  • @Hyman74Roth Well for me I always thought of LOTR as an experience, SW for me is just a movie, sometimes I have fun with the Harry Potter films especially the second one.

  • @Pozorrogo

how dare you say that on a public forum???

  • I don't get it I thought the prequels were the original 3 books and what came out in the 70's were the last 3 books. So if that's the case how could the fans be mad at him for telling the first part of the story? I can understand them not liking the films as films since they weren't that good is that what they're mad about?

  • @harr77 Part of it I think was the fact if I am not mistaken, that they probably wanted something more than organisms being the key to the Jedi powers, remember there is an actual Church of the Jedi, some people don't screw around and as for Jar Jar Binks- I think the folks coped enough with the annoyance of 3CPO that they didn't need two comedy relief in the movie. Then again people are odd that way, all I saw the prequels for was to find out why Vader became Vader.

  • the prequels were good. superfans, imo, almost equated the originals w/ their childhoods. when they weren't the same/what they expected, they flipped out. sure the force is the product of microbes and jar jar got annoying, but the 1st 3 had stuff i still scratch my head at. btw 2 was my favorite *await the hordes*

  • THX1138

    Da best.

If ya want a dose of pre-Star Wars FX by the same folks, but without the leaden dialog and mythic pretension, check out The Last Star Fighter, or Flesh Gordon. Both have commentary or special features about them.

EXTRA CREDIT....What LP had Star War style gatefold notes by Industrial Lights, and featured a band member wearing a THX1138 cop uniform?

Hint: They were on Capricorn Records.

Tried to watch "Strikes Back" the other day. Boy did it suck. The banter! gasp! THE BANTER!

  • Hey hey hey! I like The Phantom Menace. People should calm the fuck down. It's movies ffs.

  • The haters make it seem like George Lucas is making them buy the new stuff and watch it. Grow up, it's your own fault if you buy something that you don't like.

And i don't even think Lucas is doing it for the money, he already had more money than anybody would need before the new trilogy and the new releases and stuff.

  • @MrIStillDontCare Kind of like that whole deal with McDonalds and people claiming its making them fat isn't it?

  • @MrIStillDontCare With all the merchandise, crappy spin offs and countless promotions the man approves of and releases it's hard to say that he doesn't do it for the money. There ain't such a thing as being "too rich." Everyone always wants more.

  • who gives a shit!

  • Sometimes these prequel haters are just control-freaks.

    Stop fighting adulthood.

Star Wars is family/kid friendly adventure story.....its just movies!

  • Why does everyone Hate on the Prequel Trilogy?? I grew up on the prequel trilogy and LOVED it...However, I will say that once I discovered the Original trilogy and saw Darth Vader...I fell in love. But the Prequels where not bad nor horrible, but something for my Generation can see and become captured by Lucas's magic.

  • about rather than just be known as the guys who makes the films of spaceships and ewoks.

  • logo in it even if it's crap, my love for the franchise has made me overlook the shitty merchandise pumped out to trade on the film's name. I believe Lucas as creative control over the intellectual property, but the fans know just as much as he does in what makes star wars great, their opinions should be taken onboard and respected. I have muc respect for George Lucas, but i do feel sorry that his greatest creation has consumed his life, with very little time for other things he's passionate

  • Thanks Jon for bringing my attention to a subject i love dearly, Star Wars, my favourite movies of all time. They represent to me SF in all it's glory and creativity, it's become an institution in Science Fiction, of the class space opera. But of course the downside is the over-corporatization of film and star wars and how George Lucas, one time indie director is now one of the most richest men in show business. I love Star Wars but i know i've been guilty if accepting mostly anything with SW

  • ok i really dont understand why people keep bagging on the 3 prequels..... yes it was sorta bad BUT ONLY COMPARED TO THE ORIGINALS. The prequels were entertaining and it had alot of character development for obi-wan and Anakin.

    stop hating on the starwars....

  • oh for fucks sake! I'm a big star wars fan- grew up with it and was disappointed with the first two prequels- but come on! giving voice to peoples criticisms and frustrations is one thing, but to frame it in the context of 'crimes against the fans' and to ask who owns the art- the artist or the audience- of course its the person who creates it.

"Live from your own center"- Joseph Campbell

  • It's only entertainment! Stop taking this shit so seriously. If George Lucas did anything to your childhood, then it says more about your childhood than it say about George Lucas.

  • Episode 3 was decent. The other two prequels sucked

  • how could it jus wipe away yout childhood just because he released a movie a couple decades later doesnt change the fact that u enjoyed the movies when u were a kid and still love them i hate when people say shit like that

  • I wished i hadn't watched any of the prequels, what a piece of garbage. The Ewoks sucked to. I also hate the changes he made to the original films. Please stop!!!

  • why the fuck does anyone watch star wars

  • @dsquaredmlg For you info we are nerds with no lives with no girl who are 37 and still love with our moms and dads.

  • Personally, I thought Return of the Jedi was one Star Wars too many. I farking hated the Ewoks.

Proud to say, I never saw any of the prequels.

  • I am one of the few who actually liked the Prequels.

  • on some level, I can enjoy the new prequels, even if they aren't as good as the original. Harrison Ford and Mark Hammil are in the originals! There just aren't any actors as good as those guys in the new movies - but its not like the new prequels are as bad as Avatar or most of the horrible sci fi/fantasy/action movies we get these days. in fact, Phantom Menace is GREAT compared to Avatar. Jar Jar is GREAT compared to any character in Avatar.

  • @zor0825 Fuck you...... you insignificant little pillow-biter.

  • That last line was priceless!

  • Go listen to Plinkett's reviews on the horrors of the prequel trilogy..

  • @DeJach the pro-ta-gon-ist...

  • What's that about Guido (Gweedo?) shooting first? Did he really change that for the reissue, I never noticed.

  • @AllWalksofLife In the original SW, Han shot at Greedo first. In the re-edit, Greedo shot first. Basically, they made Greedo shoot first so it was a more "friendly" version. They were afraid that Han's character was portrayed as too "cutthroat" for a hero. Fans say it neuters Han. Han shooting first basically implied that he anticipated Greedo's intentions, and was badass enough to nip that situation in the bud.

  • @Ryvensan Also, as is pointed out in TPVSGL, it's integral to show what kind of man Han Solo is. He's a bandit/smuggler totally willing to shoot first. By taking that away, not only do you change Han's character, but you change his character arc, where he goes from a bandit who only cares about himself to a leader willing to sacrifice for the common good. Even in STAR WARS, the fact that he comes back at the end is what saves Luke and allows the rebels to win.

  • People who are that freaked out by movies need to get a life.

  • Eh, I dont give a shit what anyone says about George Lucas, hes still The Shit for producing The Best Sci Fi Movie Saga of all time.

  • I thought Revenge of the Sith was the best film in the whole franchise. Attack of the clones was alright. Phantom Menace? It happened. That's all I'm gonna say.

  • The dialog was always shit but you didnt care in the originals because they were either revolutionary and unprecedented when you saw them in the 70s or you were a kid later on. Then we all watched the new films as adults and it stuck out like a sore thumb. I think objectively, while episode 1 was atrocious except for the climax, episode 2 had its moments and episode 3 was actually the best of the franchise in my opinion.

  • interesting, a must watch for me, thanks for the review.

  • breathe MAN breathe!

  • Another great Kim review. I love his contributions to WTF.

  • lolwut?
