  • So with everything clear different sandpaper extra coats rollers thinners what does it really coast for a truck that size im thinking 150 _200 range ?

  • i put a clear coat on my tailgate and sanded all the way up to 2000 grit and buffed it out with rubbing compound and even polish. then i put it back on the truck out in the sun. the next day it hazed up real bad. what do i do now? i buffed it again and the same thing. does the paint need to cure a certain amount of time, then i buff it again? help me mike!

  • @mikepfleming after I finished polishnig...I used a good UV resistant wax, eliminates that problem

  • @mikepfleming

Make sure you didn't go through the clear coat and now the paint is fading where there's no more clear...the way to tell is if you were polishing it and the paint color was coming off on the pad/rag you were using to buff it.

  • @mikepfleming rubbing compound makes swirl marks, i would try a finishing compound and then wax.

  • @Bryanx89 exactly. I would rather use a polishing compouns, and run the rotary buffer 3x and get a mirror result, then bang through it with rubbing compouns and get stuck with swirls.

  • I wish you had shown them side by side comparison, so we could see if the difference was worth all the extra effort :-)

  • @girlmastergeneral honestly I don't think its worth the extra effort. If I had clear coat and my compressor was still running, with an my hvlp gun it might have been.

  • So for people who prefer this method you showed. they and I also don't neet to worry about findind a sealed paintbooth . And all parts step 1 through the last step can easily be done outdoor with decent temp and moisture assumed . Is that correct? If yes then that rocks cuz I can't find a booth right now

  • @tmoney1091 I painted the entire truck right where it sits in the video

  • Thanks for making this video this put me completely at ease for my task ahead of painting my sc 300 project it is almost finished with body work and priming currently. So you used the rustoleum for the rollon. Wet sended before u cleared it. The used a sprayer to clear it and then pollished it is that correct? What about trash of little stuff the got into the clear coat while it was drying outdoors. How do u get rid of that type of stuff???

  • @tmoney1091 wetsand that shit right out of the paint, the little bugs or whatnot, don't try to remove them from the paint as its drying, you will destroy that paint layer. Just wait till its dry and wetsand em out, its actually very easy to do.

  • okay I just painted my car with white gloss rustoleum paint I did 10 coats diluted the paint 50/50 with miniral spirits I did no wetsanding between the coats, so now can I still wetsand it smooth even though I did no sanding between coats.

  • @airgear87 absolutely dude, not sure what the finished reslut will look like, but if you start with say 1500 wet, then step up to 2000 wet use alot of water and a sanding block between your fingers and the paper....polish it out it should look great. Remember this....the flatter(level) you can get the finished surface...the clearer the reflection will be after polishing. Mirrors in your house are perfectly flat, thats what you're after by wetsanding...FLAT

  • do u add the clear coat bfo u sand or dou sand first and den add clear coat and polish or what plzz help?

  • @021410l0v3 you would wetsand the paint before adding clear if the paint is gloss based like this gloss black paint. Then rewetsand and polish it up nice

  • @Mikeandwendy74 thnx alot

  • the one person who didn't like this video must have carpal tunnel Syndrome. He or she needs glass and help.

  • @mikeandwendy74 should i paint over it if it is water marks? *** (typo on last post) also i am getting some spots in my car where i can see the original color (red) and i am painting it black... do you have any tips on what i should do?

  • I also used the roller technique but there are sections where it looks very uneven(not orange peel) it looks like dried watermarks but i don't think is because i can't sand it off..... what is your advice? i tried using the spray can for some spots but it is a lot lighter than the paint/mineral spirit rolled on. Both the spray can and the paint/mineral spirit paint were Rustoleum.

  • @nipz69 if you skip to 1:15 and pause the video, thats what the paint looked like before I polished out every panel after wetsanding. I think those "watermarks," are where you're wetsanding through the highest coat, and exposing the lower coat of paint.

  • @Mikeandwendy74 should i paint over it if it ? i tried using the spray can version of rustoleum but it was a few shades lighter :\ so i ended up sanding it down to the metal in some parts of my car .... will it turn out to be the same color if i apply 6 coats to those areas?

  • how many coats should i put on b4 i wetsand and clear coat

  • i painted my 96 deville flat black. is there any way to clear coat it without getting a shine? or should i just leave it as is? the resone i ask is because every time it rains the car drys with 1000000 water spots. thanks

  • @staytruestayfit You need a "Matte" clear coat finish, it protects but does not shine, I use it on custom camo rifles.

  • @Mikeandwendy74 thanks for the reply. does rustoleum make this or duplicolor? thanks again

  • @staytruestayfit Rustoleum makes it in a spraycan, not sure about in a quart, but you could probably find some if you look hard enough, its readily available in spraycan at most stores made my multiple companies

  • @Mikeandwendy74 ill just do the spray can. i take it that id need to sand it and buff it like what you did?

  • with the right spray tips you could do it good enough but this looks good

  • I used the roller technique on my hood and the wet sanding is brutal. In some spots I went to the metal to get the orange peel out. I'm thinking about using the rattle can method to paint the rest of my car (I heard there is less wet sanding using the rattle can method). What is the steps if I use the rattle can method.

  • @djrepete If you're painting it on and having a tough time with orange peel you got one of the following problems, the paint isn't thinned enough, or you need to lay down thinner coats. I had the same problem in the beginning. You could try the rattlecan method but good luck keeping big ugly runs out of the paint job, thats not easy with the tips that come with rattlecans.

  • I forgot. Did you use the blow dryer when putting on coats and did you use clear coat? If so when?

    Thanks

  • @djrepete no didn't use one for this, this was the only panel sprayed with clear just to test it out.

  • BLACK GLOSS. This is BLACK GLOSS. I have BLACK GLOSS. What ever you are going to paint with. This is BLACK GLOSS. You will see the dots at the end in the BLACK GLOSS. I have BLACK GLOSS. You really like saying black gloss. Jk man. Good job.

  • @vincentzul I didn't realize I said it that much, now I'm gonna go slug myself in the jaw :)

  • i have done this to my gsxr im on the 2000 grit wet sand part what did you polish it with can you do this by hand?

  • @audiobahnsoundgod You could polish it by hand, but its a heck of alot easier to use the rotary polisher, I used meguiars ultimate compound for the polish on a white finishing pad

  • @Mikeandwendy74 im doing it cheap as i can im a broke college student and the stater is out of it so i have time but thanks im sure i can buy it at auto zone the paint looks really good on your truck its the only reason i decided to do it my self

  • @Mikeandwendy74 i hear that the rustoleum black doesnt look black. what do you think? do you thinks it looks grey or it looks black enough

  • @mickee06 I'd say we can put that rumor to bed, the black looks VERY black

  • @mickee06 In direct sunlight, the rusto black sometimes looks more like chocolate, not bad, but if you work with the black for long enough, you will notice it.... Out of the direct light it looks really good. Most blacks have a slight color tint to them.

  • i had a truck with the crear coat off of the hood, so i sprayed some on and it looks great exept for where i missed and started to run out, how do i fix streaking?

  • Do you add soap to the water when you wet sand?

  • @djrepete no but you can, I use a garden hose so I have fresh water constantly when I wetsand

  • did you end up clear coating the whole car

  • @skater1andahalf nope I just did that single panel to try it out, the rest of the paint job without any clear still looks good today

  • Thanks for your quick reply. Do I prime the whole hood of the car or just the spots I sanded to the metal ?and hoe long do I let it dry before adding the first coat?

    Thanks

  • Paint job looks great.

Today I started he project and I started with the hood of the car. The hood of my car has paint peeling ever where. I sanded with the 320 grid sandpaper and sanded to the metal in a lot of areas. Do I need to use primer? If so what kind would you recommend, Do I have to sand it before adding the first coat of paint and how long should I let the primer sit ? Thanks

  • @djrepete You could prime it then paint no problem, just if you sand it to metal, clean the metal and prime it quick to keep the moisture off the metal so it won't rust on you. Then give it another quick sand with 320 or 400, and you can get started. Alot of primer dries fast it depends on which brand you use.

  • AMAZING!!! i bought my black bmw and one of the doors looked spray painted and it was fading and i repainted it cause ive been broke and didnt have 150 to real paint it ...so i used the same black paint and then SAME clear u did and it looks horrible and was depressed for 2 days...but noooooooowwwww i know how to make it perfect :D thx im going to try this as soon as possible

  • @K00lPunk90 it will make you sick if you rattlecan it, BUT if you can wetsand the paint down afterwards, hit it with 1200, then 1500, then 2000 grit WET VERY WET.....then polish it out it can look great.

  • @Mikeandwendy74 plan on it tomorrow thx for the video

  • did you paint with rustolium gloss black from a can? or is what was the gloss black sprayed with?

  • @xNSxTY3 this was the professional series gloss black in a quart can cut with mineral spirits then rolled

  • i have the same polisher as u,just wondering what setting u used to polish the clear.

    thanks

  • @megatron804 I usually start on the lowest speed, just to spread the polish around real good, then I bump it to 2, then close to 3 with real light pressure, don't want too much heat getting into the paint from the polishing pad, keep it moving

  • Comment removed

  • did you notice that it was easier to polish with the clear on it. also is the clear peeling at all. how did you put on the clear? a few thin coats or a heavy coat

  • @nonamesleftorwhat I think I used 2-3 coats when I rattlecan cleared that panel. The clear coat was pretty easy to polish out with the machine, it hasn't pelled at all and still looks nice and shiny

  • @jeepdude770 what I would do is take some of the paint you used to roll the car with and paint a scrap piece of metal laying around...don't get fancy with it just slap some paint on, let it dry then clear that to make sure there is no adverse reaction to the paints. If the paints don't jive together, better to watch it happen on scrap than on your car

  • How did it hold up over the summer? Did my Honda in July, came out awful. Clear coat will not cure, it still feels gooey and dust sticks to it really bad! Haha.

Maybe I sand down and redo it:(

Can't possibly make it look any worse.

  • @EricWaterTruck I have had zero problems with the paintjob since I got it to this point. I tried to make sure everytime I painted it was nice thin coats, also thin coats with the clear. So far its holding up great

  • Hey man great video. I'm going to try to fix my hood because after a wax this year my shine faded and it's got that cloudy look to it. Would the best bet to be to scuff then clear or just go ahead and clear since it's not shiny anymore? I don't want to take off any paint. Also how many coats do you do just one?

  • @nevrsumr22 If your clear coat is dull....you can avoid having to repaint it...by giving it a light wetsand with 2000 grit, then polishing the paint with a rotary buffer and some meguiar's ultimate compund. I did this to my wifes 1999 300m, and it brought the cleat coar back to life in about a half hours time.

  • @Mikeandwendy74 one question can you wetsand with a roto or something,, it seems to me that it takes me forever by hand, but your squeege trick is gonna help thank you.

  • @sewerrod yeah you can, but you need a good hand wetsander to do it, preferably a air hand wet/dry sander, alot of water and be careful, they can remove alot of paint quickly. I would try it on a scap piece of steel for a while before using it on the vehicle

  • @nevrsumr22 if you wanted to reshoot clear, I would shoot a light coat, wait about 10 minutes, shoot a medium thick coat, wait another 15 minutes then shoot a final coat. wait until it dries then wetsand the clear with 1200 real lightly, then 1500 then 2000 and polish it out, it will shine ridiculous

  • man.. i failed.. i dont know what happend. as soon as i wet sanded it all my paint came off. there was nothing to use the compound on. i dont get it.

  • @MegaMoFUnk how many coats of clear did you shoot

  • @Mikeandwendy74 i did 4. but honostly i'm sure i didnt do it right. i'm going to redo the painting and i'll let you know the results. because if it comes off that easy then i'm not doing something right at all haha. can you tell me the basic steps to spray painting starting from sanding

    ?

  • Alright so tell me if these are the steps. After putting on base coat put on clear coat, wet sand it, then should i use Meguiar's Ulitmate compound to polish it for the reflection like that? i'm not sure what material causes the shine like that so please write back. and thanks alot man your a genius. this will prove to all my friends that this method is not bs. thanks boss

  • @MegaMoFUnk and also do i spray anything on after polishing it?

  • @MegaMoFUnk no you can give it a nice coat of good wax

  • @Mikeandwendy74 THanks alot! haha so when you coming out with a DVD?!

  • @MegaMoFUnk you've got the steps down, now you justneed to work the technique out, for final coats I wetsand with 1200....then 1500...then 2000 all GENTLY wetsanded. Then polish it out nice nice with the ultimate compound

  • this looks awesome. did you need to sand down to the metal before painting?

  • @noizefloor no I just sanded with 220 then 320 to scratch it up, then started painting

  • so before you used the clear on it (you just used spray bomb correct?) you wetsanded the basecoat, and then WITHOUT polishing you applied the clearcoat ontop? What did you use to polish the meguires paste in?

  • @DaytonRimGuy the clear was spraycanned. Yes I wetsanded the gloss black until the gloss was gone from the topcoat before spraying the clear.

  • This is undoubtedly the best 50 Dollar Paint Job on the net! Amazing! Also you are not boasting when you say that most people can't compare their showroom finish to this. Amazing work!

  • @POPPASHANGO Thanks man

  • can you paint the black gloss paint with a clear coat lacquer?

  • @VENTRUE05 havent tried it myself, I would use the laquer over apainted test piece, something other than the actual vehicle first

  • Looks great. I spray painted my roll pan on my truck and It was too dull so im going to clear it now and wet sand and polish it and see how it comes out. I "spray tinted" my tail lights and wet sanded them and polished with ultimate compound and they turned out great some hopefully my roll pan will too. Thanks for the video :)

  • Nice job I painted mine last week with a hvlp gun wet sanded it and didnt like how it came out to many runns i tried the rollers today but got way to much orange peel do i have to sand it flat before I do a next layer or make it thicker then wet sand if flat im going with a gloss black its a crown vic please help thank u

  • @santacruzdavid1989 wetsand it down flat, scrap the orange peel. Start with a nice flat panel, and the results will be good, Thin coats, clear mineral spirits to thin the paint, thin coats, I did 2 then wetsanded with 1000, 2 more, then use 1200, 2 more then 1500 then 2000 and polish it up

  • man this looks great, just wondering what your cleaning the panel with after u wet sand the paint and clear coat?

  • @megatron804 I take a nuce clean microfiber cloth and wet it a little with mineral spirirts, give it a wipe, flip it to clean wet it again, wipe, then hose it off, nice nice

  • Comment removed

  • wow...unbelievable,looks beyond great...just as good as an oem paint job,hell..it looks better....theres alot of people that talk shit about this method of painting, and this is the proof that it works,no one can deny that this is mint...great work bro,you sir are a genius

  • this is pretty impressive... good job...

  • Comment removed

  • @jschristian44 if you have a glossy surface, you dont want to paint clear over it, wetsand the final coat to 2000 grit and remove the gloss, then clear over it, it will come out great.

  • Comment removed

  • @jschristian44 no only sand it, then wash it then paint the clear, then wetsand the clear, then polish it out

  • Comment removed

  • @jschristian44 no I used ZERO rubbing compound, I went from wetsanding with 2000 grit, to straight polishing compound. If you do it this way, it might take a little longer to polish it out(not really), but the polishing compound is far less aggressive, and you have a lot less chance of burning through your paint with the polish instead of rubbing compound

  • @Mikeandwendy74

okay great thank you for the tip. is it polishing compound or can i just use polish?

  • @jschristian44 polishing compound

  • @Mikeandwendy74

how did you apply the polishing compound? do i let it dry like wax or try to rub everything in? use a machine or by hand? does this take out the 2000 grit sandpaper marks? thanks

  • @Mikeandwendy74

tried doing this and i have glossy spots and dull spots all over the trunk lid. how did you get yours to look like a mirror, that is what i want mine to look like and ive tried so many things and it still doesn't look like that.

  • Comment removed

  • @EdgeOfHonor did you wetsand it before buffing?

  • Nice job. They have the cans of clear enamel at the Home depot near my house and I was considering rolling it on just like the gloss black paint I'm completing. What should I cut it with? 50/50? I used some mineral spirits for my paint that was creamy white and I wondered if it made the black paint a lighter shade? Afraid to use it again for the clear enamel in case it gives it a tint or makes it milky. Any suggestions?

Also, when I'm done painting should i sand that smooth before clear coat?

  • @carbon83 not sure about the white mineral spirits, I bought some but didnt use it, I went with clear spirits for all the mixes. When painting the clear just sand off the gloss, I went smooth and it worked ok

  • Your videos really inspired me to try this out even though I was kinda scared the first 2 coats but after wetsanding and rolling new coats it lookedd pretty good. I did have a question though. About how long did you let the clear enamel dry before you went to wetsand & did you keep a even distance when spraying?

  • @atownzone3 I painted this under the absolute worst conditions, I tried to keep it even distance but the wind was whipping about 25 mph lol. So ANY conditions would be better than what I had. I let it dry overnight before wetsanding. It will look horrible if you spray it, until you wetsand, then it comes back

  • @Mikeandwendy74 Oh okay, cool. I am rolling the paint in my garage and let dry and then wetsand outside. so I guess my conditions are better than yours lol. I just got back from Harbor Freight and bought the polisher. I am going to put a short video on mine once everything is done. Thanks and I will keep you posted.

  • dude u are the shit!!!!!!

  • @ripkvv :P

  • wow your awesome ! i just painted my suburban hood and wet sanded it with 1500, 2000 grit i dont know what polish to use i have some turtle wax and meguiars ultimate do you think i can get a shine bye hand or i must have a polisher? im scared to use my random buffer with this wool pad

  • @MrNycbasketball if you have wetsanded with 2000, and your finish is nice and smooth , dont use the wool pad, go but a white or yellow finishing foam pad, and use the meguiar's ultimate compound if you have a roraty buffer. If you have a random orbital buffer, it will take alot longer but go for it with the wool pad and the ultimate compuond. You will destroy a paint job alot faster with the rotaty buffer than you will with a random orbital

  • @MrNycbasketball deff use a rotary, your arm wont ache and it`ll do it in 20 mins ;) i just done my van looks superb ;)

  • thats balls the walls good. you really slapped those people in the face with your $50 dollar paint job.

  • @Carmador thanks man, the whole key to this paint job or with any paint job is to get the paint as flat as possible, if you can do that you can make it a mirror finish

  • looks great! 5/5.

  • Oh man that's epic. I seen people just use rubbing compound then wax and it look good but nothing compared to this..

  • So first you sand it fine, then clear coat, then sand again? Then you polish right?

I'm doing the same thing but I didn't roll on my paint. I used Rustoleum automotive paint (gloss white)

  • @unknownally well with any gloss paint, when clearing over it you want to scrap the gloss, so I wetsanded to remove the gloss with very fine sandpaper, I used wither 1500 or 2000, then shot the clear, then wetsanded the clear and polished it up

  • @Mikeandwendy74 Okay I'm using Rustoluem Gloss White but it looks dull. I'm going to wetsand it anyways. Thanks!

  • @unknownally you can get a wicked shine off the gloss white, same thing, wetsand it down at the end with 2000 grit, spray it with a hose, use a squeegie to pull off the water, and look close, if you see groups of specs here and there, thats orange peel, low valleys in the paint that the squeegie left water in. wetsand those areas lightly, then polish it out. the white should shine beautiful

  • DUDE! This is awesome!. I hope my camaro turns out the same. Ill make sure to post a video response.

  • Any other video of the whole truck. Would like to see the full truck from like 3-5 feet away..

  • Where do you buy such high grit sandpaper?I searched he depot and they don't go up to even 1000...

  • @skater4life2360 autozone or advancedauto parts any auto parts store has it

  • OOOHHHH I see the black isnt the factory paint..... You sprayed it on there. Did it come from a rattle can too? Im sorry im not really familiar with painting with a spray can. All these years ive been spraying PPG.

  • @johnsont963 no gloss black was rolled on, super fine foam roller, then wetsanded to 2000 grit and polished, the original paint was dark blue and light blue 2 tone

  • you probably just wet sanded the rustoleum completely off and buffed the factory clear coat .

  • @johnsont963 considering that theres 6 coats of gloss black that I put on, wetsanded and polished BEFORE I ever shot clear coat on it, I'd say your about 100% INCORRECT

  • @2REALOfficialPage I really dont know if it would stick, but to be on the safe side, I didnt want to shoot it then have problems if it didnt. Then wetsanding only took me about 15 minutes so it didn't take much to prep it.

  • Looks good... have you thought about trying the rustoleum clearcoat in a paint can? Was thinking it you cut it down 50/50 and apply it with a roller just like the $50 paint job, you might get minimal-to-no orange peel. Pretty sure the spray can is going to give orange peel no matter how hard you try to avoid it.

  • @pixelbat thats what I would have used If I could have found it, let me know if you find a place to buy it I couldnt

  • good job, very helpful.

  • Looks good.
