No, the technology is there and has been there for years, it's just a question of scale.
The shield you're talking about would have been equipped with SM-3 anti ballistic missile missiles (Odd name I know). This has since been replaced with ship based systems.
Besides, bombing the launch sites in time isn't possible, since the time between the silos opening and the missile launching is way too short, and keeping track of all the mobile ones isn't possible.

@chrthiel But for ballistic missiles I do not know how on earth anyone could do anything at all. When the missile goes up it does it rather vertically i.e. say the launch is Siberia, the missile will rise above Siberia then when in space it will turn towards east or west and there its head will break into some 10-20 nuclear heads and each will take a different direction. Some of them are false ones, you can never know which are the real ones until the last moment.

Or at least not as much as say... the UK, Spain or Japan. Being closed in the north by the ice (they only got lately access to the St. Petersburg - and it was Tzar Peter who build there the shipyards), then from the south by the Ottomans who were constantly supported by the British, naturally Russians had to solve these problems to build more navies. However when they got their feet in the Pacific they already had their navies there going and they had colonised all Alaska down to Canada and even California.

In Georgia it took Russians 2 hours to clear the Georgian and US-agents and they used mostly if not only a mere fraction of their nearby forces.

Most of the warfare is conducted by ICBMs from inside the country, of which the united states has over two-times as many as the Russians. Naval ships are important for reconnaissance, and, above all, can be mobile launchpads for Minuteman ICBM missiles. Other military factions, such as ground troops, would be useless, not the navy, who would only be 2nd in use to the air force.

One Aegis missile cruiser would be enough to whipe out every single ship in that battle group and probably before even one of its fighters is launched. Fourty sum-odd fighters would be a bit much for any single ship - short of another aircraft carrier - to handle at one time, but such is the nature of modern naval warfare.
That's also why Aegis cruisers travel in taskforces of their own.

A war between US and Russia directly will be nuclear and in that navies are u s e l e s s : only nuclear submarines count and there, the US is fucked deeply. All 10 US airship carriers will be sunk in the first minutes of war by small tactical nuclear missiles unless you claim to
1) any means of preventing a nuclear explosion above your ship

While I agree that a full-blown war between Russia and NATO would probably go nuclear, navies won't sunk within minutes because: the means to kill incoming cruise missiles, be they nukes or not, does exist and is in widespread deployment.
So far the technology needed to keep track of and hit a ship at sea with a long ranged ballistic missile doesn't exist, but the technology to kill long ranged ballistic missiles does.

Even prior to GPS ships were well monitored if they approached any distance of range and by that moment death comes in seconds. For aircraft carriers, a small nuclear tactical weapon evaporates the ship. Russia has about 3000 tactical ones it would't economise them for 10-20 carriers

There is only one chance of going so, i.e. bombing directly the silos - and that is why US is pressed so much to have this infamous "shield" established in Eastern Europe, just outside Russia : to be able to shoot with tactical weapons against ballistic ones. But even so, little is guaranteed.

No, the technology is there and has been there for years, it's just a question of scale.
The shield you're talking about would have been equipped with SM-3 anti ballistic missile missiles (Odd name I know). This has since been replaced with ship based systems.
Besides, bombing the launch sites in time isn't possible, since the time between the silos opening and the missile launching is way too short, and keeping track of all the mobile ones isn't possible.

As I said, even the close anti-ballistic installations that US state department (i.e. NOT the american people) dream of installing in Eastern Europe as if to fight against hypothetic Iranian attacks (yeah righ, their ass!) won't give them really any guaranteed results, the advantage will be theoretic at its basis, nontheless that does not mean Russia would tolerate.

@chrthiel But for ballistic missiles I do not know how on earth anyone could do anything at all. When the missile goes up it does it rather vertically i.e. say the launch is Siberia, the missile will rise above Siberia then when in space it will turn towards east or west and there its head will break into some 10-20 nuclear heads and each will take a different direction. Some of them are false ones, you can never know which are the real ones until the last moment.
So how you fight this?

@notgodsemigod Another reason would be that traditionally Russia (from before Catherine the Great, going past the USSR and all the way to today's "Putin's Puppet Show" aka RF) has never been a truly seafaring nation. Or at least not as much as say... the UK, Spain or Japan. And the last time Russia did have a grand fleet to be tested in war, it was sent to the bottom by the Japanese - not something you want to recall, I am sure, but it's true nonetheless. (Just google "Battle of Tsushima")

Being closed in the north by the ice (they only got lately access to the St. Petersburg - and it was Tzar Peter who build there the shipyards), then from the south by the Ottomans who were constantly supported by the British, naturally Russians had to solve these problems to build more navies. However when they got their feet in the Pacific they already had their navies there going and they had colonised all Alaska down to Canada and even California.

For decades British, Americans and all the European sad lot (French, German losers and even Belgian jokers) were sending desperately industrialists, workers, professors and enormous amounts of money to turn a medieval Japan and its slave force into a modern industrial and militarist nation so that it would become the point of control of both Russia and China.

BUT, in the big picture, I'm glad and relieved Russia's nose was bloodied: it achieved equilibrium in an area you were previously threatening. Also, you say Tsushima was only made possible by British help. What you choose to overlook, however, is that several of the Russian battleships and heavy cruisers were BUILT IN FRANCE. So you had your share of help from your traditional ally but lost... Alas!

@aarmenean The battle of Tsushima came ONLY after substantial British military aid - British who were monitoring the Russian fleet all the way told the positions to the Japanese who were then able to dispatch and find the Russians who did not expect the Japanese to be able to spot their crossing fleet in the middle of the ocean (Russian fleet that was not yet ready for battle after having crossed half the globe to reach there, having first to be supplied and repaired in Russian ports!).

@notgodsemigod You make two interesting (but incorrect) allegations: 1 that the Russian fleet was monitored constantly by the British - wrong! and 2 that Tsushima is in the middle of the ocean: also wrong! It's actually the straight between Coreea and Japan (map time?). So if the Russian fleet did not expect the Japanese to notice and attack a hostile fleet sailing in their backyard waters, well that was a spectacular mistake on the part of the Russian admiral - and he paid with his life for it

@hotpocketpoison Iraqi army was full of WWII and 1950s US and USSR crap, full of lowly trained soldiers (apart the elite which anyway just avoided battle since Saddam preferred to keep them out). Still the incapable US forces had to carpet bomb and chemically spray (to the point that about a half your soldiers in the first Gulf War gave birth to paraplegic kids (we are talking about several of 10,000s of paraplegic kids) - a fact widely known apart within US where the issue has been silenced.

In fact they had taken over control of the country in less time, with much less means than Americans and they remained there till the USSR collapse facing only some random US-armed resistance. I am not going to praise the communists here but it is a fact that they controlled much more territory than what Americans currently control (and Russians do not arm the resistance like Americans did).

@hotpocketpoison In reality, the Russian forces whenever they have intervened they showed much more resilience and persevearence. Russians do use brutal force using conventional warfare, i.e. not carpet bombing, not chemical warfare as Americans used in Iraq, Afganistan and Serbia and still Russians whenever they intervened they achieved better results. In Georgia it took Russians 2 hours to clear the Georgian and US-agents and they used mostly if not only a mere fraction of their nearby forces.

Most of the warfare is conducted by ICBMs from inside the country, of which the united states has over two-times as many as the Russians. Naval ships are important for reconnaissance, and, above all, can be mobile launchpads for Minuteman ICBM missiles. Other military factions, such as ground troops, would be useless, not the navy, who would only be 2nd in use to the air force.

One Aegis missile cruiser would be enough to whipe out every single ship in that battle group and probably before even one of its fighters is launched. Fourty sum-odd fighters would be a bit much for any single ship - short of another aircraft carrier - to handle at one time, but such is the nature of modern naval warfare.
That's also why Aegis cruisers travel in taskforces of their own.

Seem that Russia is improving its military now. US is sort of reducing its military again to peace state. The only new things we got are F-22s, some new aircraft carrier to add to its stock of 10, smaller UAV, and replacement for the M family.

USA could not win Vietnam, regardless of the rules of engagement. If you study Vietnamese culture and history, and then consider the regime that the US supported, its quite obvious that both South and North Vietnam would have fought for their freedom to the last man. But Russia had a similar experience in Afghanistan, like you're repeating now. Lets put these petty squabbles to rest - Imagine what could be acheived if Russia, USA, EU, China, and India worked together towards the final frontier?
