I can appreciate classicpop65's observation about Jack Jones. If you listen to Johnny Mathis, it's much the same thing. He doesn't reach for notes that he can't to anymore. You just admire the beauty that his voice has now opposed to longing for a sound that will never come back. It's amazing to hear guys like these sing so well into their 70s. Sinatra clearly couldn't do it.
Jack Jones tore the house down on Jerry Lewis yesterday. His voice has changed and in some ways he is a more powerful singer than in days past. Lets face it, most of us can't sing like we use to...Sadly David Gates can't sing David Gates anymore - But Jack Jones is still cool and that is indeed, very cool.
In getting back to Jack's 60s voice, he definitely learned to USE it in every way possible. He tackled difficult melodies by gliding easily from baritone to tenor range. He used the sheer power and beauty of his voice to MOVE listeners - he never used it in any indulgent way, always with PURPOSE. And I've always felt that Jack got deeper into the emotional core of lyrics than Sinatra or Bennett did, especially since Jack's voice could project great tenderness. Such an AMAZING singing voice.
classicpop65:I totally agree 100% with you my friend. This puts him in a class of own.Jack could take a song like Strangers in the Night and turn it around and give it more feeling and depth to the song.I love Sinatra version. But I loves Jack's version more his Vocal tone and Control ,Brilliant!..Marc Jones-Vocalist.
Marc:is there a technical name for the "new voice" Jack adopted in the 70s, with his mouth not open as fully, and singing more from his upper throat? It's not as dazzling as his original voice - it's less demanding, yet still packs the emotional punch. He's obviously smart about the notes he's still able to hold. I agree that Sinatra (and Bennett) stayed in the same style too long, often overreaching where their voices no longer could go. Still legends, but they sometimes embarrassed themselves.
Hello classicpop65.I got came across your comment just now.I would have responded sooner, only if you would have click on reply glennmach comment. I would have gotten your message by YT E-mail..No Problem my friend. Its great to know that we both agree that Jack Jones has a blessed singing voice. & he has been like a teacher to me being in that vocal range..Marc Jones.
Jeez, Jack STILL can't retire that David Gates material, so here he is, singing "make it with you" when he's 70 years old. Jack must've been very busy with his Vegas act in the 70s, otherwise he would've been more like the rest of us - hearing Gates' voice at least twice every half-hour on radio, and actually celebrating when Bread broke up. But it's okay - still love ya, Jack, even though your music taste is puzzling at times. :-)
Don't you think that it is a very finely constructed popular song (harmonically) with a beautiful lyric ? You might as well say that Frank Sinatra couldn't get away from singing Al Bowley material.... surely quality writing is quality...regardless of age ?
I suppose it's a finely constructed popular song, if 70s music is your personal idea of what's great and beautiful. But for myself, I feel that just about every song, and every lyric, that Jack sang in the 60s is far more classy and sophisticated than this. And most of what Sinatra sang from the Great American Songbook was way above the level of Al Bowlley as well. Just my taste and opinion, of course.Once I heard what Jack recorded in the 60s, it made his 70s music seem so inferior by comparison.
I agree in what you say,Jack Jones is a very versite Vocalist. The 60's were he's best vocal album.I still enjoy he's latest albums.Sinatra kept he's style and never change it in the 70's 80's 90's.Where is Jack Jones did for some reason,he became more laid back with he's vocals with he's Diction and Vibrato, still packs a punch in he's Powerful vocal range and feeling.Thats why I admire he's 60's Albums so much more!..Marc Jones Vocalist.
He just keeps getting better....
