There is a mechanical switch that causes the circuit to turn on when you flip open the grid. So yes, the opening chirp is caused by that switch. The communicator from Hallmark has a good sound system, I have heard of people transplanting the electronics from the Hallmark ornament into a fullsize replica for the best combination of accuracy and sound effects.
I have read that flipping the grille open connects the circuits that turn everything on... Does this include the opening sound? I want to customize my cell phone and was hoping it was the kind that is activated by light, or a pressure being released.
Hmm, I found this communicator at hallmark cards as a christmas ornament, funny thing is its like a little cheap one BUT, it does the same thing yours does, only its smaller
I just got mine today. It really is a fantastic communicator! The fact that the moire' pattern spins is worth getting alone. Most toy or replicas of this do not have that feature. I do think it's kind of false advertising though that the box says it has over 20 sounds. I counted mine and it has a total of 11.
It should be noted that the packaging on these things does not reflect the product. The box front says there's supposed to be a Scotty phrase ("Aye Captain, Scott out") which does not exist. It also says that it features the voice of "Dr. McCoy", which it does not. It even claims to feature "over 20 sound effects", but there's only six regular voice phrases, one additional in the Exclusive, the callback phrase, the call beep, and the opening chirp. That's a maximum of ten.
the upgraded one has the 9th of spock saying to boost you signal. I just bought 2 on e-bay. thank you for showing what I am going to get. this has it all. very kool and cheap for $30. I have 4 master reps and 50 other communicators of all kinds.
actually, most of the "toys" on the market right now are 14+ and if its Neca its usually 18+....these are aimed at adult collectors more than kids, who would most definitely break them if they got their hands on half this stuff...

That's not a collection. It's a bunch of toys that don't do anything. Grow up! What a waste of space.
