He went blind after a car crash in Europe a year or two before this clip. He played with King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Horace Henderson and Hot Lips Page among others but not, I believe, with Louis Armstrong.
One of his stage comments in Edinburgh, when he was in his late 80s was to say that any ladies over 70 were welcome to come back to his hotel after the show.
I played with Benny many times on British tours. How great to see him again. Of all the players I played with he was the least predictable. Hpe he can still get his ice-cream every day.
What club was this? I was able to catch Benny at Sweet Basil, NYC. This was probably 1996? I had no idea who he was...I had read an article, in one of the papers, that he was appearing in town so I went down to the Village to catch him. Needless to say, he was terrific. At the time, I think he was 94 years young...and for those who don't know, he was blind...yet his set was impeccable. I'm quite sure he played with Louis Armstrong...can someone verify this? Thank You for putting this up.

Saw this guy play in a bar in Paris, 1964.
Memorable experience.
In one piece he muted the clarinet by bringing its end close to a table.
