  • I cry everytime.................... my mothers mother went through thi and she is 82 now xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • On 2010 I spent my summer holidays in Ireland: MAGIC COUNTRY: I enjoied very much, I will surely return.

  • no matter how cheerful the various artists try to sound when singing this.. it just keeps bringing tears to my eyes.

  • A great song, best sung wearing the red of Munster Rugby, feel the passion, be the 16th man.

  • It was never a famine but a starvation!!

  • dropkick murphys anyone? XD

  • Ireland...Fantastic place...

  • A delightfull irish ballad I feel guilty for not knowing it before today. With thanks to YOU-TUBE.

  • what a lovely song..... IRELAND ALL THE WAY ...... xx

  • this was played at my nephews funeral yesterday, keep torturing myself listening to it,

  • i love it when my girlfriend sings this to meeee!

  • the famine was basically ignored by the british they beleived that after the first year it had gone but it was still claiming the lives of thousands of people daily. the rich british in Ireland watched as innocent people died of starvation while they took food as they were selfish. as they were throughout history the british were ignorant, selfish and bias towards the irish that had the right to food

  • Comment removed

  • Infact the famine was caused by the middle class, hording projuce from the markets in the towns, food went to the highest bidder. He who could pay got his belly full. The catholic chuch used the history of the famine to promote them selves here in Ireland.

  • well the famine in ireland was actually a british engineerd disease.

  • thats glendaloch!! i ♥ it!!

  • @giovii2 what does "Glendaloch" mean? Plz translate. Thank you and Happy St. Patricks' Day.

  • @Pisces31660 i ment Glendalough, sorry, its the valley of the lakes... i think of what i remember...

  • Athenry is in galway

  • there was no famine in ireland the british dragoons were stealing all the food of the irish people under the orders of sir charles edward trevalyen

  • Absolute rubbish!! It was a disease, downey mildew that affected the entire Irish potato crop between 1845-1849, causing it to rot in the ground before they could be harvested. Learn the facts, m8!!!

  • fantastic !! brings tears to my eyes

  • this song can bring tears to just about all who hear it. the famine was a terrible time in ireland, and like all sad times theres a lesson to be learned. I first heard this being sung by a small lad about 7 years old on a dublin Street one sunday afternoon 8 years ago.

  • makes me homesick as well coz the vid is from Dun Laoghaire and places close bye -- all of my childhood -- beautiful!!

  • So beautiful it's lovely. I love it to bits !

I believe there is a castle there in Athenrye.

  • The flute part is so beautiful, I wish I had a wood flute.

Anyone ever heard the wyndbreaker's version?

  • Don't know what it is about this song. Just absolutely love it. I'm an Italian/American and my better half is Irish. I've being to Ireland and loved the people, the culture and the land. Being also a musician, I will learn to play and sing this song for my Irish girl.

  • the song is about the irish famine

  • There was famine everywhere...in Germany people stole rotten potatoes from the prison fields, to keep from starving. Wasn't confined to Ireland or any place else...but lots of beautiful songs have come out of Ireland, many inspired by the famine and future 'troubles'. God Bless Em...and all right thinking people everywhere. Love Paddy Reilly. My ancestors were Irish, Scot and English. I'm proud of all 3.

  • there wasnt a famine everywhere like there was in ireland, the songs about the injustice placed on the irish people by the british at the time, thousand were rounded up n shiped to penal colonies in australia for no other reason than they were trying to feed themselves n stay alive and hundreds thousands more fled to the americas, the british had the power to help the colony and didnt, its our eternal shame that we commited genocide against a defenseless people no wonder they hated us

  • Let it go, for God's sake. No English person alive was responsible for what happened 150 years ago. I guess I need to re read history, for I'm pretty sure people in England were also starving, in Germany, America and most of Europe too. Incidentally, my mother's family were all Irish and proud of it. This has nothing to do with Irish, but with ppl who attempt to keep fanning the flames of hatred for past actions. What good is accomplished by stirring the pot.

  • It is wonderful isn't it, and such an emotive song with content behind it that's so sad.A man wanting to feed his little children who were starving, under a heartless regime at the time.

  • Perfect match of words and music. I learned about this song right here in the USA from a local Irish band. The whole audience was singing along and it was very moving. It was the starting point for me to learn all about the history of the famine. I think by now I heard every artist's version of this song.

  • heartless regime at the time is an understatement, the atrocities that the english committed in this country are much worse that wat hitler did!

  • Yes I quite agree with that. It broke my heart to see the pics of the starving broken, listless people in Ireland at that time, when Trevelyan could have prevented it and didn't. The Govt and MP's in 2009 are now a national disgrace and the public are disgusted and furious with the claims they have made, including me.

  • I have never heard so much pish in my life, where were the gas chambers in Ireland?

  • Yes, a great song and a very sad one. Who could not fail to be moved by it? These things happened though, and in England too. Look at the Tolpuddle Martyrs. In fact poor Michael was lucky not to have been hanged - many were. In England at the same time young children were being made to go down mines, or up chimneys. We should not be fighting the battles of the 19th century.

  • Lovely lovely song, so sad with emotional content that's unrivalled.Musical arrangements great.

Paddy Reilly sings this really well too.

  • Best! Every March, I make my students listen to this and talk about it. Is it a crime to steal if you're trying to feed your starving children? Beautiful and sad - digs like a surgeon, into a human being's true character.

    Damn that Trevelyn!

  • The song makes you feel the sadness in these words. No it can't be wrong to want to feed you little kids when they're hungry. I guess the song is telling about when a poor wretch got caught for stealing and got hung or shipped off to Australia or something ?

I don't know the real history of this but would like to know. What was it all about ?

  • I'm Australian. My G G Grandfather was an Irish convict sent to Botany Bay leaving behind a wife and 2 year old son. Every time I hear this song I'm overcome with emotion. This is one of the BEST versions I've heard. Well done!

  • Isn't it sung beautifully, and surely the beauty in the music conveys the emotional appeal, and what makes it so special.

(Paddy Reilley has a lovely version too)

  • Proud to be Irish! Decent people , with heart and a sense of humour , even when in the shit. samuel Beckett wrote " when up to your neck in shit there's one thing left to do, sing!" Up ireland your the best !

  • Aye damnedest right!

  • Beckett is my hero. I keep his photograph out at all times- his face shows such grace, beauty, courage. "We are all born mad. Some remain so."

  • Makes me homesick - thank you for the music! slainte xx

  • no matter what your religion is this song is a part of history and should alway be remembered

  • Does anyone know why this group is not more popular? They are one of my favorite Irish groups; I love their renditions of "All for me Grog" and "Boys of Killybegs", I think they are a great band and should be up there with the Dubliners, Wolfe-Tones and all the rest.

  • i agree, they are reali good!!

my uncle was in it although he left not so llong ago, he is the main singer of 'fields of athenry' but im not 100% sure if the rest of the band r still together lthough i think they are!!

  • yeah he's definitely a great singer, I have a bunch of their songs on iTunes and listen to them quite a bit

  • Wot u said is tru marnaca wot r ancestors did is in the past and all we can do is learn from past mistakes, I'm a catholic and have many friends in both communities bt it is difficult to move 4ward when certain communities stll fl the same as they did in the past. Its true on both sides, look at Bfast(Xtreme example bt mst obvious)is stl divided, and it's like this throout N.I as some towns are more prot or cath bt stl Ireland is moving forward slowly bt surly

  • then it is now up to you and those willing souls of your friends, who are the future here, to get this settled, start by introducing your friends to each other so they can learn to get along and they will help ya, no doubt. C'mon one person can start the move that will change the world. We are here together me just have to find ourself to it.

  • This song was made for all catholic or prodistant im a celtic fan so im catholic but its for every one no matter what religion or belifes just enjoy it

  • One of the best songs ever written...period..thats a fact!!!

  • what a song!! it always touches me!!

  • i love this song!

  • maybe jsut my favorite version, the accent really makes it better...

  • Ireland forever!

  • great version

  • (",)

  • deadly song!(",)

  • This is a folk song...it has been around for a long time....unfortunately, some twisted, evil, religious people see it differently...like you obviously do.....For me it's a beautiful, sad and touching folk song.....for the record (not that it matters - to me)I was brought up as a protestant....religion has no place in society however! It is a divisive factor.....your comment doesn't help!!

  • maybe you should see it from the catholic side, after all, we were oppressed by your penal laws for about 300 years.

  • Sabbath5678, were you oppressed? then you must be old as hell! stop living in the past moron, live now and be happy, remember the past and learn from it but dont rack down on someone who belongs to a group that did wrong many years ago, they arent doing that today and he cant take the shit you are throwing for something his ancestors did. by going on like that you will break the spirit of the now living ones. Peace!

S.H.A.R.P. and Proud! Pride without Prejudice!

  • U hvnt bn to N.I recently have u? there r stl people who feel that way in both communities (mainly teenage youths) and they r the 1s continuing this old mistake. they're numbers have certaintly dewindled to a hndful bt stl there wil b a bitterness fr many years 2 come, which is dissapointing as all we're doing is stunting r own growth.

  • This was played at my great auntie's funeral. Very emotional and touching song.
