To our Australian friends. The NZ government is too busy wasting tax payers money on over seas trips and lining there own pockets with perks and bonuses to worry about having a combat wing. I support having a fighter wing but all the politicians here want the money for them selves. As it is the government here is cutting another four hundred million dollars from our defence spending.

@australian1000 In 2001 after disbanding the A-4's and MB-339's, the labour govt was gona get 15 F-16's however that was scrapped too.

As of this moment there has been talks over the years to recreate the air strike wing, but the main problem is the NZ military budget, and costs for maintenance, fuel, personnel, training,upgrades etc.

Yes 10 of our A-4's were purchased from Australia, i can't remember where the first lot of them came from...possibly the states?

If you look up: 'Why NZ needs another Defence White paper' by Lance Beath and 'Triumph of Ideology: NZ Defence Policy' by David McCraw, it might give you a better understanding as to why defence was politicised by partisan politics and the NZ mass media with the soundbite.

its like my country haha we got a very nice glorious army and our great navy, but still we got some problems, we are like you, still facing the problem to replace our F-5 Tigers and our fighter squad is making purpose to the SEDENA (National Defense Secretary who is in charge of the Army and Air Force) to replace them for F-15 Eagles or F-16 Falcons, and the Navy is getting convinced by the russian to get Su-27 fighters and Su-30, also the Saab Group offered JAS-39 for the Navy Air Force...

@charlynedved99 Oh please, we heard that 'land of peace' bullshit from Helen Clark. We were getting F-16's so cheap that it was being called 'the deal of the century'. But then Helen Clark happened. If we were invaded, they wouldn't have stopped anyone wanting to take over us. We had them to pull our weight in the pacific. Now our Army and Navy aren't trained well enough and we are now considered a joke. The fleet of the Skyhawks we had was small. But they made us proud of our Air Force.

I left the Air Force in 1996 when it still actually was one. All the fighter pilots left pretty quick for 'Greener fields' once the squawks were mothballed. The current RAF 'Red Arrows' leader is an ex-RNZAF squawk pilot.

@australian1000 The RNZAF operated heavily upgraded A4 Skyhawks until 2001 when the Labour Government at the time disbanded the entire air-combat wing of the RNZAF. Talks are currently developing with the new Government about restoring our Air Combat capability in the near future.
