From Wikipedia: "Scandium and yttrium are considered rare earths since they tend to occur in the same ore deposits as the lanthanoids and share similar chemical properties with them."
no they aren't they just are put into the same group because they have the same properties as each other, and because they have the same number of valence electrons
Lanthanum has no f electrons. I was always taught that it is a d-1 transition metal, not a lanthanide, and should always be below scandium & yttrium in the table.
sorry it's a rare earth metal not a transition metal. however, if the rare eath metals hadn't been first discovered when they were then they would be classified transition metals anyway.
What was the rhyme again? Does anyone know when Lanthanum was added to the periodic table.

Holmium (Ho) and Erbium (Er), makes Hoer (whore) in Dutch, and that how a teacher at my school lets students know the rare earth elements.

Lanthanum, the slightly radioactive element.

Lanthanum is also used in camera lenses, many older soviet lenses make use of it and they are excellent lenses.

That mnemonic is so random it's barely easier than just remembering the list of elements! :-)

Why are scandium and yttrium considered as rare earths?

You con cut sodium with a knife as well.
Hellothere212121 3 years ago
yeh but that's to be expected of an alkali metal this is a transition metal making it far more amazing that it can be cut with a knife.

Yes. Oddly most elements are metals...
