The funny thing about this is that Steve Taylor's song was written in the 80's before the fall of the Berlin Wall and had nothing to to with Putin, Steve was actually writing about the struggle of Lech Walesa and the Poles against Soviet domination. This song was actually performed behind the Iron Curtain at that time and was a rallying point for the strongly Catholic Poles against the rampant atheism of Soviet Russia. True, Putin is a throwback from those bad old days of KGB dominance though.

at that moment, russia had no choice but to respond to Georgian assault. But Russia used Ossettia/Abhazia as part of its game to pressure Georgia away from NATO. Russia didn't care as much about local peopl as they did about geo-politics. Same could be said about the US and EU, though.

Yeah, it seems like he has done a lot for Russia. I hope he does good and not evil. I suspect his main motivation is power and glory. He did appoint himself Prime Minister. That's somewhat questionable. I don't think he'd start a war with the US. I expect he doesn't want to die as much as the US doesn't want to die. I suspect old alliances are just remnants of the Cold War. Still, Iran poses a major threat to stability in the middle east. I hope it works out.

It's an ammendment to our constitution which protects citizens from government oppression but it means nothing for foreigners. It also don't protect people from private groups or clubs. Interesting point. I was surprised Georgia attacked. They should have known what would happen and that no one would come rescue them. I think Russia is trying to scare Poland and the rest into not working with the US. Probably an effective tactic at this point. I don't see the US getting pulled into another conflict. Russia is a little rusty but the US is otherwise preoccupied. I suspect Russia will keep using this to their advantage.
