english punctuation is annoying, because it doesn't reflect how people, actually, speak.
what if someone talks really fast? "the power went out last night--the clocks were blinking when i woke up..." would you use a dash? dashes may indicate abruptness, but they still look disjointed, to me.
maybe something like"the power went out last night // the clocks were blinking when i woke up. it was a disaster..." i know two backslashes aren't real punctuation marks, but it looks better, imo.
Why do you argue that the semi-colon is not a good solution? It's a well-attested (and widely published) grammatical technique that links two sentences on the same topic and can imply a relationship between them. This is a clear explanation, but generally recommending against semi-colons is difficult to understand. Can you clarify?
@equesfuscus I can personally testify to her point of view on semi-colons. I was a semi-colon addict. When I would go back and look at a page that I have written that contains even 2-3 sentences that use semi-colons it would always look like a mess. If you have ever read a page like that I believe you would understand. Try it out. Now I'm perfectly fine saving my semi-colons for sentences that I feel need a little extra attention. Used moderately, they can bring great focus to important points.
