Today (Feb 26) is my son, Tom's, birthday. Less than three weeks before he was born I watched this show, likely on our brand-new 9" black and white television in our tiny apartment in Hallock MN. If memory serves, my wife was already in the hospital with complications from the kidney disease that took her life only two years later, at age 22. Thanks for bringing back the memories: they're what we have.
I was nine. My parents called us into the room to watch. My mom told us, "This is important. This group is going to change music forever." It was the only time I ever remember my mother making any kind of prediction like that. Looking back, I think of all the ways their musicianship, style, music and lyrics have done exactly that, and I wonder how people can come on here and argue about them being "just a pop group," and whether or not they could read music.
My wife just told me that she was about three inches away from the TV during this performance. She planned to marry Ringo, or maybe George if Ringo said no. I guess I became default option No. 3!!
I will never forget that historic night of 2-9-64,my sister & my female cousins watched the show together. I rember screaming & trying to kiss Paul on the telly. Love those Beatles, long live The Beatles & their music forever. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
so, being a grown man, does that mean you're immune to cool motherfuckers then?
i mean, i did'nt know a lad from the dingle could invent the bloody internet. that would definitely mark him as a geek, now would'nt it? boy, nancy reagan would certainly be proud of you.
@xvoy2002 You're a grown man who can't type properly. I notice that you have left comments on other Beatles videos, trying to insult Ringo. Sure he acted, goofy, but he was a funny guy and people liked him. As far as his drumming goes, it wasn't over the top, but it's not bad either. I don't really see what your problem is. Just being a troll?
@imagesilike Yes,, actually i have teh album. the truth is the album is only high quality because producer George Martin made it so. The Beatles themselves are not highly talented. They were fortunate enough to be surrouned by talented people. Paul McCartney cannot read music to this day.. Says alot about a 'musician'.
@xvoy2002 I'm not sure that it's all down to Martin, sure the producer has input, but not to the level you're implying. I also don't think that an ability to read music has anything to do with musical talent. It's merely a means of recording. If anything, the knowledge of chord structures and progressions can be a more limiting factor for a musician and often causes them to think "inside the box". We're all entitled to our opinions, but I don't think the "can't read music" argument is valid.
@xvoy2002 One of the a-team musicians in Nashville confessed to being able to read music, but quickly qualified it by stating that he didn't let it get in the way of his playin'!
There are many artist in every music genre whose musical innovations may have not developed if they could've read music..."Not a prerequisite for the job!"
@xvoy2002 Wow, you know exactly ZERO about musicianship. Macca is one of the most innovative bassists in rock. Lennon's rhythm playing is superlative, and George's solo and slide work grew to be extraordinarily evocative. Ringo is one of the most in-the-pocket drummers you can imagine. And the vocal work is simply unparalleled. All goes without saying to those who understand music, but ... for the love of god, don't betray your ignorance like this again.
@xvoy2002 As a matter of fact, it DOES matter on the internet! While the conveyance of your message may be just as easy to understand whether or not you spell right, it still says something about you as a person. It says that you don't care about looking intelligent. Funny, because you don't appear to be.
My absolute favorite moment is at 9:15 - the respectable, bespectacled fully "adult" fellow in the back laughing his ASS off at all the girls freaking out.
i like how in hard day's night they spend half of the movie talking about "no one cares about ringo" when at 3:55 you can clearly hear a group of girls shrieking his name at the top of their lungs XD ringo's awesome
I'm sure every seat in the audience except for the guys, was wet after this performance. Why do girls scream and lose all control when guys just stand there or maybe dance a little?
I know this will sound terribly crude and I hate myself for saying it, but without a doubt, when the Beatles BURST into She Loves, straight after Till There Was You,, every girl in that audience was, well..............you know.
@24Swiffer "Their first appearance on February 9, 1964 is considered a milestone in American pop culture and the beginning of the British Invasion in music. The broadcast drew an estimated 73 million viewers, at the time a record for US television, and was characterized by an audience composed largely of screaming hysterical teenage girls in tears"

@RottenDC1 Exactly! I'm not sure why the uploader claims that this is "the rarest performance on the Ed Sullivan show," or that it took him "weeks to find."
Maybe to garner more hits? To earn ad revenues? Hmmm, Areosmith1000?
@heyricky Yeah, it's SUPER rare, for those who don't know how to type "Beatles" into Google. It could take WEEKS to find it, if you're a blithering fool, which apparently the uploader is.
(duh. it doesnt matter what age you are, the fact still remains: The Beatles are the greatest rock band ever--- realizing that simply means you're NOT DEAF to good music... which is most of us here. No one needs special attention for being young, it just means that they've got their heads screwed on right.)
@deckardisareplicant yeah, but he can barely sing, that's why the always back sing... besides, he is not that good on bass playing (im not saying im better)
At least the beatles rock band got 1 song right for this venue, ya gotta admit that in that game minus the cavern, their studio years, & the apple corps rooftop, the other venues, they only had about 1-2 songs that were the right songs for the venue when they played there if I were able to, I'd have kept the songs to the right venue. Any way, they were great in the video
@escort500xlr its not only that but most of their fame was fabricated. even the owner of EMI say their ability to play music was limited and " a bad joke". mostly the drummer ringo.
@takezo73 the beatles spent all day mixing to get all the sounds perfect. once they were done they went to lunch and the cleaning lady pushed all the levels down because she was dusting. so like ten minutes before the performance they tried to put all the knobs and levels back to where they thought they were as fast as possible.
If I was one of those fans I would jump over everything in my way and get down to that stage!! I LOVE THE BEATLES!! Is it weird to have fantasies about them?? Lol
My dad told me when the Beatles first got huge in America, his mom would always remark how "even the boys like them!" haha I think that's awesome. She had a point. Not many bands with such a female following and so many love songs can keep a strong male following. For some reason I never feel corny singing the words to any of their stuff
from Mexico, the beatles are the best rock band in the world and I think that this show make like a magical dream. In Mexico I saw this film in 1981 (I was born i 1971) on tv program called "studio 54" by Jaime Almeida. Today my childs (Faba and Pam) enjoy this music. They learn speak english with this songs. Thank you Beatles...and, I´m sorry girls, I´m married...
@dourmatproductions The media want to make it seem you're alone, but I'm coming across more and more people like you. You are definitely NOT alone! I'm 35 and ADORE The Beatles (if you couldn't tell by the screen name, lol).
@yipeejc I know, crazy huh...I still would've wanted to live back then during the 1960s and 1970s. Btw, I'm a girl, and I told my boyfriend I would've been a flowerchild/hippie, etc. and he said, "I would've been too square for you then because while you were off partying and trying to change the world and cause chaos and be radical, I would try to make you stop but I still love you for being you! Eventually, I'd give up because you have to be you!" lol! thanks baby, I love you, too! :)
@yipeejc the ironic thing was that back then, my dad said that a lot of public schools had dress codes, and the rules stated that if you were a young man, you couldn't have your hair past your ears, e.g. like the Beatles, so a lot of guys my dad's age would get expelled or suspended because of the way their hair looked or because they dressed like the Beatles - think the later albums.

The Beatles didn't perform on 9/2/1964! They performed on The Ed Sullivan Show on 2/11/1964! Why are you making up the date in your video?
austifornia 9 months ago
@austifornia dear aussy:
they landed in the u.s.a. on fri feb 7th and played on ed sullivan sun nite feb 9th. please get your facts straight.
p.s. is it true that there only 3 good things about australia:
1. kangaroos
2. foster's beer
3. its so far away fr the u.s.a.

@dourmatproductions The media want to make it seem you're alone, but I'm coming across more and more people like you. You are definitely NOT alone! I'm 35 and ADORE The Beatles (if you couldn't tell by the screen name, lol).

@yipeejc thanks! :) it's been six and a half months and going strong!

sjk6101983 10 months ago
@yipeejc the ironic thing was that back then, my dad said that a lot of public schools had dress codes, and the rules stated that if you were a young man, you couldn't have your hair past your ears, e.g. like the Beatles, so a lot of guys my dad's age would get expelled or suspended because of the way their hair looked or because they dressed like the Beatles - think the later albums.

I barely remember the night I saw this performance, but now I notice how nervous George Harrison looks at the beginning. He was only 20 at the time.

I'm 14 and I love The Beatles more than any other musicians ever. Today's music is way too angry and fake. The music of the '60s was nice and real.
