  • Impressive. Fine instrument and performance.

Interesting to see the differences between various artist's rendering. My favorite interpretation is Fox's. I'm wondering if he simply took some liberties with some of the transitions, sustaining them for emphasis, or are many today just in a hurry? (serious, respectful question)

  • Turning pages...that's my job :D

  • This performance sounds like a bit of a spin-off from the Koopman version...

  • magnifique !

  • OK WTF IS HE DOING.

  • Is this the Thomaskirche?

  • A truly clean rendition. Too bad, however, the organist seems to be so full of himself. I've always said "never have an attitude no matter how good you are at something because there is always someone out there who may be even better than you and if that happens, you're going to look pretty silly with your little attitude aren't you."

  • R

épondre à cette vidéo... il faut écouter et non toujours critiquer !!!

  • @guglielmiable What?? As an organist myself with degrees in classical AND popular music I'm well able to "listen" with an ear of perfect pitch frequency and if I "criticize," it is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism which leaves us "open' to "listen" to constructive criticism also, makes us more "professional..."

  • @Brenniman65 désolé si je vous ai choqué......mais il y a tant de critiques injustes parfois !!!!

  • who is the player???? what is his name???

  • actually, the performance I prefer

  • OMG! 5:15 is amazing. trills with his feet!? wtf

  • wer hat das wunderschöne stück dermaßen verhunzt????!!!! bullshit

  • Karl Richter was way better.

  • @mydezi83 Yes he was... but he is dead. We need new organists to play them not recordings.

  • A truly pristine organ sound! I'd like to hear this monster live.

  • i feel like i was told to sit and listen but what seems like torture is a truly amazing art

  • David Letterman at the organ?

  • Eddie Van Halen's Eruption solo was inspired by this great piece of art.

  • It's in a diferent tone...it's not where it's sopposed to be... o.o anyways is a good interpretation

  • There are certain cadences in Bach's organ music that is a testament to his mastery of composition...one such is at 3:35...it just sounds so natural...the logic flows through the music...

There is another one in the Toccata, Adajio and Fuge in C major....

I'll try to find the time reference and post it later..

  • Nice new variant on BWV 565! Is this the Thomaskirche's new Gerard Wöhl organ? I understand that this instrument has two tunings available to its full-mechanical action, a feature unavailable in Bach's day.

  • I really enjoyed this. I think the organist missed an opportunity. Mens' hosiery does not need to be basic black. You can bet if I'm ever shown on camera, and I know they're going to be looking at my feet, I'm going to be wearing the most outrageous socks, tights, nylons or hose of all time (carefully chosen to match my outfit, naturally).

By the way, isn't it amazing that he can hit those notes with his feet w/o looking?

  • Why does this sounds so funky? Is the pitch different or something? o.O

  • This organ is perfectly set up in this recording. The reeds aren't too rumbly and the recording quality is excellent. Too bad I don't like this performers interpretation. He's too quick... he doesn't give enough time for the chord changes to really take dramatic effect in the toccata. The fugue is well done though.

  • Nejako čudne hrané

  • Why does it sound like the entire song is in a different key?

  • I like the powerful sound of this organ. It rocks.

  • Nice done, not exactly the same like the original. But well done

  • many mistakes but is great

  • @stefanos898 There is no mistake - but a different interpretation, maybe the Ringk copy

  • @Klockfantast yes there are many, but it is still great

  • Im using this song in my movie called "the God Son- Guns of Revenge". this will be the theme for the character I play- Luther von Mayhem, aka- Dr.Mayhem-the main villain in the story. In the movie, he plays this on his organ pipe.(it ends at 2:31 though, i'm using what I think is the best part of this music

  • @TheTyranno11

Good Idea. That way your movie will be sure to fall into a villain cliche' found in 100's of other movies.

  • Well, we got the sceen done 2 days ago. The part where Dr.Mayhem plays is by far my favorite sceen yet. Once im done with the whole movie, I post it to Youtube. It might be a while though.

  • Why is he in such a hurry? This has WAY more power at a slower tempo with more nuance.

    The instrument sounds GREAT, tho....

  • @SyvetheShairks

Isn't it a normal tempo for this? In my view it is quite a normal tempo for normal song! It is not good if it is too slow either. But the orchestra version here on youtube is I agree slow and very powerful.

  • El órgano es un instrumento totalmente sacro, junto con el clavicémbalo llena mis oídos de felicidad. Por eso yo agradezco a Johann Sebastian Bach el haber compuesto esta maravillosa obra junto con todas sus admirables creaciones.

  • This song just rocks. Seriously. I wish I could play the whole thing....it's absolutely and dramatically AWESOME!

  • I honestly don't really hear the pitch difference.

  • it is quite drastic. Try listening to another of the innumerable recordings of this piece here on youtube and then this one right after...it's at least a half-step higher than the standard A 440 tuning.

  • thats cuz its only half a step higher....i guess its hard to tell, i hear it

  • epic...

  • Truly a masterpiece

  • ... keep in mind that the organs Bach played in Leipzig were in fact tuned to A480 and not A440.... even though this organ isn't tuned exactly to A480 its closer than A440. With that in mind it is tuned to perfect temperament and not Neidhardt or O'Donnell Bachian temperament, which therefore renders it relatively inaccurate to the time despite the pitch shift.

  • By perfect temperament do you mean equal? I thought intonation was either perfect or tempered.... :)

  • At 0:25 he has his foot on the right key, but the tone seems to be higher by a small bit less than a half-tone. It must be the tuning.

  • the proper way to hear this!

  • I wonder if Bach ever conceived that this would be so popular a piece.

  • you are right^^

  • this sounds a half step to high.. is that baroque tuning? and shouldnt that mean its about 435 instead of 440 or 445 ish in this case?"

  • I'm no expert on tunings, but I believe many Baroque organ tunings are higher than the modern standard

  • I agree, it's not D minor

    100%

  • Yes it is, it's simply tuned higher than A 440, which was quite common during the baroque period. Organs are sacred instruments and tuning them on a higher pitch was a symbolic way to differentiate them from the secular instruments, a higher pitch to lift them from a terrestrial condition and project them to the heavens.

  • You're right- it is entirely tuned up a semi-tone and I don't know why so many people take issue with this fact. This organ is not tuned to A=440, although it is a beautiful instrument.

  • ist sehr gut =]

  • :| The Keys are so Deep...

  • yes, D minor...

  • no - he is not playing in d minor - look at the keys at 2:32 - there you can see it. watch other videos and look closely on the fingers of other organ players

  • There are some accidentals written in at points. It's still in D minor.

  • He is playing in D minor- but the organ IS tuned up a semi-tone...I have to give credit to these organists- If I play a D on a piano or organ, I expect it to sound D. Any other note throws me off...

  • 1:58 - 2:00 WOW!

  • Nice demonstration of the world's largest, most powerful musical instrument, isn't it?

  • That was absolutely incredible.

  • critizium is ok but not like how your saying...thats just mean these people have to learn alot of this it takes years or months to learn this stuff

  • hes a profecional its not you can do any better you cant even play one note of this song probobly

  • Please explain that "American history" thing...

  • you obviously have no clue what your talking about

he played coresponding to the style of bach, when it was written it was meant to be played like that

and i would like to see you play this dumbass

  • amazing song,

    awesome played !!!

    good stuff

  • Excellent, but the sound from the organ almost sounds synthetic...

  • a great performance!

  • I love the trill in the pedals starting at 5:16, especially considering how high up the bench is for him. XD I noticed there were people in the audience. It must be very strange to go to an organ concert where the audience is forward facing but the organist is that high up and that far behind in the back. I just haven't been to many concerts. I also noticed how the people did not start applauding right away (or at all) once the organist was done. Hmmm...

  • I love the Celtic knot on the facade.

  • its the seal of bach

  • I see. Thanks.

  • Amazing

  • Not one of the best. He was the best. The greatest musician ever born.

  • He's reading the handwritten Ringk copy, isn't he?

  • very nice!!!

  • karl richters is truely the best one....this one is ok, very good quality and clean sound...

  • i like it very much too :) by the way, the name is spelled Böhme, not Bohme

  • the woman is his wife and plays the organ also very well, so i'm sure she didn't mind ;)

  • Das Schönste was ich bisher gehört

habe! Gruss aus Stuttgart nach Leipzig!

  • nice

  • His interpretation is interesting (some specialities) and very distinct and well expressed and the tempo is very distinct and certain too. The organ seams to be a new and clean one although it would be interesting to hear him play another organ aswell

  • my favorite piece of music ever ... i have heard it played better though

  • beautifull a great bach interpreter!

  • Amazing version. I loved the interpretation. Excellent job!

  • SPLENDIDE!!!

  • Organ sound so clean and expressive

  • BRAVO !

  • I'm not very fond of the whole mean-tone thing-it's outdated and limiting, and a brighter tone in the keys it *can* play in could simply be attained, without the limits, by tuning the whole thing slightly sharp-but I keep seeing videos of this instrument flying around on Youtube and they all sound, tonally, very good, so kudos to the builders. The organist also has a nice interpretation of Bach's Dead Horse; some of the ornamentation is unusual, and a nice change, and his timing is excellent.

  • I LOVE 4:25 BEAUTIFUL SOUNDING ORGAN

  • YOU PLAYED THE VERSOIN THE TOMB OF DOOM HAS PS That haunted house ride is at the midsouth fair

  • Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. And the Toccata was absolutely chilling, right to the very core of my soul. I've always had a fondness for Organ music, because of it's tone, and how it can almost rip the soul right out of you.

  • Yeah the sound is great isn't it - its because its tuned above A=440

  • Great! I love it!

  • apart

  • good :)

Always i've said: JS Bach was crazy.

  • Beautiful sounding organ

  • the church should be packed

  • I heard this live at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. once. I was just kneeling in the church praying when this started up out of nowhere. One of the coolest experiences of my life.

  • superb organist playing a superb organ.....thanks!

  • what kind of organ is this? it looks fairly new

i love how it is tuned above A=440

  • Yeah, sounds like this would be in F minor if it was A440.

  • Oops, Meant Eb minor. Used to trumpet in Bb.

  • This piece is in D Harmonic minor actually.

  • great performance! Where is this place?? Thank U

  • Saint Thomas kirche (in Leipzig) watch the video information ;)

I saw this video in my school 2 years ago.

It's incredible, I love this song!!!!

  • I want to see Sauer organ on Youtube.

  • this is superbly amazing. i could go on a huge two whole post rant but there are not enough words to describe how awesome this is so i will just leave it at that. Superbly amazing

  • great performance

  • That was meant to be a reply to another comment, sorry :)

  • definitely, by looking at the pedal work he's playing in D-

  • it says that in the name... :S

  • Fantastic instrument and great performance!

  • Wow! Very individual interpretation! Bravo!

  • erm u stupid idiot organs are allways in tune he is just playing it in another way ie most people play toccata and fugue in d but i play it in E like this man is here and this is played to perfection!

  • no he plays in d minor! look at the first pedal step it's the d! and organs are not always in tune cause this is a baroque one its a half tune higher so its d# minor instead of d minor but he plays d!

  • this doesnt sound correct at all... is the organ in tune?

  • I agree. It doesn't even sound like Baroque tuning to me.

  • It's very good, but it's too fast for my taste.

  • I actually like it better this way.

  • FANTASTIC !!!!

    It taught you Bach

He can play by your hands

    hehe

    best wishes

  • Sehr gut.

Anyway Does St Kirche have the two organs?

  • Yeah it does - in addition to this one, they have a Sauer organ as well... if you count all the 32' stops in the whole church, they've got 5 :)

  • Fuuckk en heell ????? Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  • I prefer Herr Richter's playing on the Reipp at Ottobeuren to this Gentleman's playing of T&F in D-Moll

  • fuuckk en heell

  • 100%

  • Wow, this song is beautiful. Well played too. Thanks for reminding me why organs are my favorite instrument, lol.

  • i like the fugue part

can u imagine bach improvising a fugue? insaaaaaaane

  • Is Bach really buried here?

  • sehr sehr gut!

  • Great playing! He seems to have personalized it in a few places.

Also, the organ he's playing seems relatively new...

  • Personally, I think there are as many differences from as similarities too Ton Koopman though the influence is undoubtedly there. I liked the shake in the pedal. Certainly an excellent performance.

  • Ton Koopman has made school.

Bohme is totally under his influence.

    Anyway, quite excellent performance.
