Interesting to see the differences between various artist's rendering. My favorite interpretation is Fox's. I'm wondering if he simply took some liberties with some of the transitions, sustaining them for emphasis, or are many today just in a hurry? (serious, respectful question)

A truly clean rendition. Too bad, however, the organist seems to be so full of himself. I've always said "never have an attitude no matter how good you are at something because there is always someone out there who may be even better than you and if that happens, you're going to look pretty silly with your little attitude aren't you."
@guglielmiable What?? As an organist myself with degrees in classical AND popular music I'm well able to "listen" with an ear of perfect pitch frequency and if I "criticize," it is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism which leaves us "open' to "listen" to constructive criticism also, makes us more "professional..."
There are certain cadences in Bach's organ music that is a testament to his mastery of composition...one such is at 3:35...it just sounds so natural...the logic flows through the music...
There is another one in the Toccata, Adajio and Fuge in C major....
I'll try to find the time reference and post it later..
Nice new variant on BWV 565! Is this the Thomaskirche's new Gerard Wöhl organ? I understand that this instrument has two tunings available to its full-mechanical action, a feature unavailable in Bach's day.
I really enjoyed this. I think the organist missed an opportunity. Mens' hosiery does not need to be basic black. You can bet if I'm ever shown on camera, and I know they're going to be looking at my feet, I'm going to be wearing the most outrageous socks, tights, nylons or hose of all time (carefully chosen to match my outfit, naturally).
By the way, isn't it amazing that he can hit those notes with his feet w/o looking?
This organ is perfectly set up in this recording. The reeds aren't too rumbly and the recording quality is excellent. Too bad I don't like this performers interpretation. He's too quick... he doesn't give enough time for the chord changes to really take dramatic effect in the toccata. The fugue is well done though.
Im using this song in my movie called "the God Son- Guns of Revenge". this will be the theme for the character I play- Luther von Mayhem, aka- Dr.Mayhem-the main villain in the story. In the movie, he plays this on his organ pipe.(it ends at 2:31 though, i'm using what I think is the best part of this music
Well, we got the sceen done 2 days ago. The part where Dr.Mayhem plays is by far my favorite sceen yet. Once im done with the whole movie, I post it to Youtube. It might be a while though.
Isn't it a normal tempo for this? In my view it is quite a normal tempo for normal song! It is not good if it is too slow either. But the orchestra version here on youtube is I agree slow and very powerful.
El órgano es un instrumento totalmente sacro, junto con el clavicémbalo llena mis oídos de felicidad. Por eso yo agradezco a Johann Sebastian Bach el haber compuesto esta maravillosa obra junto con todas sus admirables creaciones.
it is quite drastic. Try listening to another of the innumerable recordings of this piece here on youtube and then this one right after...it's at least a half-step higher than the standard A 440 tuning.
... keep in mind that the organs Bach played in Leipzig were in fact tuned to A480 and not A440.... even though this organ isn't tuned exactly to A480 its closer than A440. With that in mind it is tuned to perfect temperament and not Neidhardt or O'Donnell Bachian temperament, which therefore renders it relatively inaccurate to the time despite the pitch shift.
Yes it is, it's simply tuned higher than A 440, which was quite common during the baroque period. Organs are sacred instruments and tuning them on a higher pitch was a symbolic way to differentiate them from the secular instruments, a higher pitch to lift them from a terrestrial condition and project them to the heavens.
You're right- it is entirely tuned up a semi-tone and I don't know why so many people take issue with this fact. This organ is not tuned to A=440, although it is a beautiful instrument.
no - he is not playing in d minor - look at the keys at 2:32 - there you can see it. watch other videos and look closely on the fingers of other organ players
He is playing in D minor- but the organ IS tuned up a semi-tone...I have to give credit to these organists- If I play a D on a piano or organ, I expect it to sound D. Any other note throws me off...
I love the trill in the pedals starting at 5:16, especially considering how high up the bench is for him. XD I noticed there were people in the audience. It must be very strange to go to an organ concert where the audience is forward facing but the organist is that high up and that far behind in the back. I just haven't been to many concerts. I also noticed how the people did not start applauding right away (or at all) once the organist was done. Hmmm...
His interpretation is interesting (some specialities) and very distinct and well expressed and the tempo is very distinct and certain too. The organ seams to be a new and clean one although it would be interesting to hear him play another organ aswell
I'm not very fond of the whole mean-tone thing-it's outdated and limiting, and a brighter tone in the keys it *can* play in could simply be attained, without the limits, by tuning the whole thing slightly sharp-but I keep seeing videos of this instrument flying around on Youtube and they all sound, tonally, very good, so kudos to the builders. The organist also has a nice interpretation of Bach's Dead Horse; some of the ornamentation is unusual, and a nice change, and his timing is excellent.
Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. And the Toccata was absolutely chilling, right to the very core of my soul. I've always had a fondness for Organ music, because of it's tone, and how it can almost rip the soul right out of you.
