Good take Hairi Maki Komi. To ad a comment for those that need to say witch was first jiujitsu or judo. It was jujitsu... Notice the spelling. 1882 Judo derived from jujitsu was founded. The founder of judo did add the newaza (ground combat) aspects until he and his students were finding difficulty grappling on the ground. 1897 Newaza was add to the judo curriculum. A Judo partitioner by the name of Mitsuyo Maeda was a professional fighter and traveled the world eventually opened up a jiujitsu
This is not harai maki komi. You're doing harai o goshi, but it'll never work the way you're demonstrating it if your opponent resists. His heels are still flat on the floor. You haven't created any off-balance, and your hips are above his. So your opponent still has his balance, and you are ABOVE his center of gravity. If you set for this throw the way you demonstrated it against even a moderately skilled opponent, you're going to be toast.
An experienced guy will push your head into the mat if you clamp down on his arm like that while doing maki komi's. This is a style of maki komi that works well for heavyweights with a strength advantage.
To avoid this, use the arm that was around the guys head and do a forward breakfall, this way, if he tries slamming your face into the ground, your arm blocks it when it hits the ground, and your weight will throw him anyways as you continue through the breakfall. Its a sweet technique.
that is harai goshi, sweeping hip throw. harai makikomi is a sweeping wrap around where you wrap your opponent around your body and go to the ground with him. the 2nd to last example you did is a harai makikomi
Good technique, although this looks more like a Harai-Goshi when you don't fall along. Harai Maki Komi is considered a part of Sutemi-Waza so when you don't sacrifice yourself in this throw it isn't actually a Sutemi, meaning no Harai Maki Komi :) . So I wonder did you guys know or didn't you?
Yeah...Roger Gracie, Flavio Almeida, Marcio Feitosa, all the Machado Bros..just got their belts handed to them for attending classes, huh? Don't be rediculous.
They are all Gracie Barra Black Belts..under Carlos Gracie Jr. All of them except for Machado Bros. teach for the Gracie Barra Association, just letting you know. They are also Champions, the Belt system works.

Judo is a lot different the jiujitsu. I have been in jiu jitsu almost for a year, jiu jitsu is primarily grappling on the ground and very few take downs, where as judo is a lot of take downs and very little ground work, so it is beneficial to know them both. I decided to take jiu jitsu because I have a black belt in tae kwon do, Muay Thai, and Boxing for stand up and so I decided I need a ground game, and when I get good at the ground then I will take either judo or wrestling.
Very nice! I just started taking Judo lessons. I am pumped and excited to learn the throws and techniques. One question, how much different is Judo than Jujitsu? Thank you for a great video!
Judo is the standing portion, getting your opponent to the ground. Jiu Jitsu is all the ground game. However, Judo does have a ground aspect, which became jiu jitsu
Incorrect...... Judo is a modified and stripped down version of older Jujutsu's. One stripping all technique that requires brute strength and second to allow for live free sparring (randori) without injury. Based on these principals it would allow a Judoka to perfect technique. Sport Judo is simply a product of both randori and Kano's idea of competition.
@Magurczek actually i have to disagree with people for saying trad JJ (had techniques that) required brute strength. it really didn't have more/less than judo/ BJJ, the whole meaning of 柔術 is "gentle art", aka leverage/technique allowing the smaller to beat the bigger. trad JJ differs from judo/BJJ however at some points where the use of "dirty tricks" are allowed because it's not a sport, it's a self defense method.
Ari is a black belt in trad JJ right? I think he should comment on this.
they are very different, one of my black belt friends said, judo is jiu jitsu, you just removed all the danger :) judo is a fighting sport, jiu jitsu is fighting
you isolate one arm, in MMA matches it would be very easy for them to use the other arm after they adjust to take your back. lets say you do throw, it they ger around your neck in the right way you'll end up taking yourself down and giving them your back. it looks like it'll work if your opponent is either slow or not expecting it. in that case, very good throw :D
The throw at 1:47 is a lot closer to harai makikomi than what was originally demonstrated. Technically speaking in harai goshi or harai makikomi the sweeping leg serves as a guide. You don't actually reap the leg as this is a hip throw. Harai goshi is a throw derived from uki goshi. Harai goshi is uki goshi with a sweeping leg. The sweeping leg is used to prevent the person being thrown from escaping and not to kick the leg out.
Proper timing will stop an opponent from doing this. At full speed the throw would have to be done at the moment the other guy ducks under. With all Judo throws there is a timing element involved. The demonstration you are seeing doesn't really cover the actual timing.
cool! one question... once he's on the floor could he punch me with that other arm? assumming i dident throw him hard enough to to take him out.(real life situation ofcourse)
U wanna win a street fight dont go for one of these unless you know jiu jutsu and go straight for the full mount you would have better luck just knowing a good knee bar and a good gaurd kick
He's gonna be able to punch you but not with any damage. As a general rule strikes from the bottom aren't very hard. The only real exception being elbows from the guard and up kicks
The thing I love about Judo is after they hit the mat I still got my clamps on his arm AND I'm in top position! The only thing Is I think my love for armbars and Kimura's has made me neglect to practice every other submission I ever learned ever haha
the version that starts at 1:40 is the Best as it ends in a perfect position for an Arm bar or... pretty much anything. Thanks Ari for posting Judo vids.

@lendondain1 it's not makikomi because he didn't land on his opponent and 'sacrifice' himself. lol

@co05 Right. Which is why I said he's doing harai o goshi.
