I'm sure that the director thought that the shakeycam was "artistic". It is, in fact, incredibly annoying. The movie itself is very slow paced. I'm at 0:45 and so far the movie seems to be about your typical lovelorn teen's descent into alcoholism and madness. The whole "mother of christ II" bit seems pretty secondary.
