@SweetNaeva24 She mentions that the herb mixture started tasting funny 10 days earlier. I'm wondering if that's the point where the Emperor realized she was having an affair with her stepson?
@mrsnorriss55 The emperor knew she was having an affair with the crown prince so I think that was part of the reason he started the poisoning. Also he was forced into marrying her to get support from another King, so he didn't really have much affection for her. If you remember he still pined after the crown prince's mother, the first empress.
@jjsan1970 he tried to kill her later on though to hide the fact that his son's mother was still alive all these years. She said he left her to die when he married the king's daughter. It goes to show that the only thing he cared about was what he wanted.
The Empress wanted to unveil the Emperor's wrong doing. He was forcing her to drink the "medicine" for years and just upped the toxicity. She had been planning a coup for quite awhile, her son got caught into when he returned. She new odds were the coup would fail but proceeded because she was going to die anyways. I think the Emperor probably would torture her by not immediately beheading and continue the poisoning. But I think she takes her own life. Chinese tragic dramas
I’m sure if the prince (the 2nd son) knew about the affair between his mother and step-brother, he wouldn’t have so readily put himself in the middle his parents' feud. Being step-mother to the first son, the queen should know better what her limitation is. Who knows if she might have molested him when he was a kid. The prince was tricked by his own mother. She made him think his father is entirely at fault- the villain, when in truth, the queen is every bit as conniving and evil.
all those lives lost and yet still this man sits on his throne as he doesnt have a care in the world.. he doesnt even have a heir anymore,, wait he might have some other outside kids
@AthinaMuniz17 ?? What didn´t you get? He´d rather kill himself than pouring ¨medicine¨ for his mother and killing her slowly with this. The king is evil, asking something like that is evil... Sad ending... but wondered what happened next? Wonder if she kills herself too?
I like this movie, however in my opinion I like it better in Chinese with subtitles; it sounds better to me. The ending was so sad but the music at the end was beautiful. I kind of wish they would do like a prequel to this film that explained all the events that led up to this film like how the Emperor threw his wife in prison and why he started poisoning his second wife. Also the affair between the Empress and Wan.
@MessengeroftheNight Well, thats exactly why he started poisoning the Empress... cause he knew she had an affair with Prince Wan. That was his punishment
@lym427 Actually the reason for poisoning his wife had not to do with the affair, but with oppression. It was a socially accepted way for emperors to live then.
I love how they carried on like nothing happened....just cleaned up and had the festival like hundreds of men didn't even exist. And then to end it with her having to drink the poison (oops, I mean "medicine") anyway. Awesome!
@udon890 Well it's not for certain if she did. Most likely she didn't. The ending is really her just flipping her medicine out of her servant's hands because of all that she had endured that night with the death of her sons, Wan and the failure of her coup (even though she knew she probably couldn't have won). That medicine is what ruined her. If I were in her position, angry, grieving and in despair, I would probably do the same.
A BIG SALUTE to all the casts of this great movie,,all the hard works are so magnificient! Chow Yun Fat made it again his remarkable acting... Cheers!
The symbolism of him making the son promise to pour the medicine or die, just knowing that this dose would burn her insides? i'm not sure that the act wasn't symbolic of burning the family crest.
I actually think that the ironic part of this film is about the all the horrible behavior of the family. Except for one, who was never really loved and died without remorse from either parent. Notice how the younger sons are mourned despite their sins!
no wonder, china's royal dynasty cud av ended dis way..maybe ..or not..but de king's really cruel..he should av been punished de most..well he got no heir at de end.
Jaychou totally rocks. I agree... he should've just slashed the king. The king is obviously more mad than what the queen was. Perhaps, he was posioning her, so she can somewhat undestand his messed up mind....
@bl3achR0ckz Come on, there's a limit to what you can do when people's lips are forming one set of words and you're trying to translate it into another language.
I agree...I think a movie should never be dubb! Gosh...it just kills everything cause yes...they sound like they're just reading lines. NO EMOTIONS OR FEELINGS like the original! ^-^
Frankly, I hate it when they dub any foreign film. It never sounds right; sounds like they're just reading lines. When you hear it in the original language, it fits with everything else about the films.
If only they could use english subtitles instead.
OMG R U SERIOUS THATS THE END. With the cup of posion spilling on the table, im sorry BUT WAT A SHIT ENDING. don't get me wrong the movie is awesome, just how they ended it, and how sad that all the princes die, Plus we dont get to see wat happens to the Queen.
Yes. The king was the one that ordered the doctor to mix a little bit of poison into her medicine. Just enough to affect her mentally, but eventually kill her to make it look natural.
@ILuvMusic1323 This is what I assume. The King was originally a lowly general in the military who had flattered the former King somehow and got the former King's daughter's hand in marriage, thus becoming the next in line. Chow Yun Fat's character already had a first wife, the one with a brand on her face. He probably tried to get rid of his first wife and her family in order to be able to marry the princess (the now poisoned queen). I guess the queen knew of his first marriage.
@AtarashiNOhi I guess that she is upset by her husband being married before her. I also assume that he doesn't really care for his queen, she's only there for his title and reputation. And that's why she had an affair with her step-son. The king had already realized that his 2nd wife is having an affair with his son so that's why he drugged her. The only other person to know of the affair was the youngest prince. The only person who didn't realize this was the 2nd prince because he was at war.
