This song will always take me back to a morning in the early spring in the early 70s. My friends and I had taken our VW bus up to Tuolome Meadows above Yosemite...bees were swarming in the trees and the million rivulets of Tuolome fed on the first thawing of winter snow in the Sierras. No one was there but us...we dropped a little LSD and we lay on our back under a crystal sky and I played this song on a guitar that I had carried all the way from Spain. Yes, I do remember Jon Stewart.
there was a version of this on the radio in the 70's, but both me and my sister swear it wasn't this one by john stewart [ nor mickey and the motorcars], can anyone tell me of another version and by who?
This was the love of my life's song for me in the summer of '72 (in Utah). After 39 years, we are back together and planning a future. You did a wonderful job with the montage.
Glad you enjoyed it...My parents also bought on Palm Row in '52, and my brother still lives there. Lakeside Historical Society on FB did a great article about the Maniscalco's Cactus Ranch. Lakeside was a great place to live in those days.
I've enjoyed this song a long time - thanks for posting it. Riverford Road - My grandparents lived in Lakeside when I was a kid. I remember driving by the cactus (nopal) farm just before we reached their place. They lived on or very near Palm Row. Early 1950's
my father played this on hig gutiar when i was a child ...he passed away in 2003 and havent heard this song sence....thankyou for the memories.......side note saw a pic of riverford road in lakeside ca. that just so happens to be where i live
I'm glad it brought back happy memories! Our family has lived in Lakeside since 1951, and though I have moved to Tombstone, my brother still lives in our old house on Palm Row. Not many houses on Riverford, and I only remember the name of one family that lived where Riverside T'd into Riverford. I couldn't resist using the photo of it when I found it online!
Heard this sooo long ago, I was with a woman that I shouldn`t have been with but I was young and she was older and I didn`t know any better but I`ll never forget her, yes, you know who you are A.
This was my favorite song when I was in eighth grade...I dreamed of a girl named Teresa J. who was the prettiest girl in my class when I heard this song. Thanks for rekindling a memory...
I taped this song off WHN more than 35 years ago. The tape no longer plays. Thanks for putting it on YouTube. As the DJ said before the song came on the radio back then; I have heard of girls named April, May, and June but never July.
The version I'm familar with started out with John telling a story about driving down the highway, he sees a hot honey hitchhiking. He pulls over and asks where she's headed, she tells him some far off state and asks where he's going. He tell's her he was going to the store for a pack of cigarettes but, "what the hell", he'd drive her where she need to go.
That version seem a bit slower but then again I haven't heard it in 20 years. Thank You soooo much for posting the song.
I am looking for the song You Can;'t go back to kansas by John Stewart and was hoping to find it to play for a friend for New Years eve.. anyone know where I might get to hear it?
@jesternbubby Hey justasinger54 to the rescue, the song is called simply "Kansas", I have the sheet music for it kickin' around the house somewhere, I've done it, this one and "Chilly winds" for years, oh, the version I do is off the phoenix live album, the sheet music is in a very batter songbook for that album, let me know if can help, its a great song as all of john's are....keep on.....justasinger54
Yes, Wild Rosie. Not only did John sing this song better than anyone else, this video is the best ever. But who was the boy riding in the car? I've seen him before.
Been looking for this great song for a long time, brings back such great memories. I like your perosnal photo story with it too. Thanks for posting this.
I was blessed to meet John in '73, for years our band covered this tune. The most meaningful song we ever performed. This tune added to my life and kept me going long after performing had passed. It spoke of my life too. I miss you John. Terribly. I cried when the news of your passing reached me. I'm crying now. I hope you find another Panther in a Hurricane to join. If I make it, greet me when I arrive. Love beyond the music John. Thank you.
I didn't know the artist til years later, but this song fascinated me and kept me company in a lonely dorm room many times in the late sixties. Another true great is J.S.' story song about The Old Campaigner, an aged horse driven by an aged veteran going blind. The power of songs-WOW!
True, he did most of his great writing while performing post trio. But listen to the great American songs he wrote while with the trio "Run the Ridges", "Ballad of a Quiet fighter", "Road to Freedom", When My Love was Here", "The New Frontier", .Giving inspiration to the young at heart in America who were willing to listen to his words (and the words of John Kennedy)......Now we must become ourselves what we want our nation to be.
Hi wild west rosie,i remember when john first made this recording, what a brilliant song and what a unique voice john had, no one can sing this song like him. Thanks for posting this video it,s made my night being able to listen to it again.
This is also a song from MY past, I wore out a couple of Phoenix live albums, I was crushed when I heard that John had passed away, he was one of the true folk pioneers, his vibrato voice is unmistakable, I can always pick his voice out of any Kingston tune, john is in folk music heaven jamming out with Woody Guthrie and his old friend John Phillips, we'll miss you john thank you for giving us so much of yourself.
This is one of the greatest songs of my past. I could not remember who sang it until now. John Stewart was magnificent. Who was the bou riding in the car in the video. Thanks, Wild Rosie. You did an excellent job.
Oh, that sexy little "growl" of his at the beginning of the song gets me every time! Whoosh! Fabulous video, Rosie -- thanks SO much for putting up John's version. It's sheer perfection.
Lovely song! I hope you and your love are very happy and last forever.

Just a wonderful song! I grew up in Phoenix and it embodies all the good times had there. So sorry he's gone; he died too young!

I simply love this wonderful song!
And I have not been known as the saint of san Joaquin and i'd just as soon right now...Pull on over to the side of the road and show you what I mean.
John Stewart was a very gifted singer and composer.

This genre was pretty common in the 60s. Nice song. I like Pat Boone's version too (apologies to the purists out there).
