I remember when this was on. I watched it in probably January 1971 when I was in the hospital. Eric has never claimed much rockabilly influence and is a little out of place here, but he does turn in a good solo bit.
It's funny b/c everyone says how awe-inspired and intimidated Clapton was in front of his heroes... but actually, I think to the contrary. I think he's acting shy and so polite because actually, this whole country-picking rockabilly thing was NOT his bag in 1970. I think he was just being polite and playing along, thinking, "I don't belong here with Johnny and Carl, as legendary as they are... I belong in Chicago's west side with Buddy and Otis Rush."
I failed to watch this one, but saw many JC shows. He was a real mentor and generator of "Handes Across Nashville" because he KNEW the DUES Payin Schedul;e as well as How To Be A Speedfreak and a Hero too.. Cash is pure Arkansas Bottomland, and they don't grow em like him no MO. (I am particularly fond of his being an Air Force Enlisted guy...in Germany, where I did 7 years flying as a C130E Loadmaster. Dig it. His daughter Rosie writes and records some great stuff, and CARLENE HAS BALLS.
@surfdogdude Don't quote me here but I think all the Dominoes activity happened in 1970...the record...tours...this television appearance...by year's end they were no more, Clapton was back to laying low in England. Duane Allman died in 1971 I think, so he was still alive at this point, just picking and choosing the odd date to play live with the Dominoes. He was obligated to the Allman Brothers Band anyhow.
When does "the slide down" occur on this song (time) I'm curious what you mean. You must be a guitar player and you probably here and see things I don't. I love this song. Thanks mate.

@dgarra59 That's Carl Radle the bass player behind Jim Gordon the drummer. Eric is in front and talks to Johnny Cash. He's playing a Fender Stracotcaster as lead guitarist.
@dgarra59 That is not Clapton. The bass player is behind Jim Gordon and his name is Carl Radle. They played together in other bands and he is always behind Jim. I'll check on the reason.
Wow. This just never gets old. Perhaps the coolest Band of all time. Other than the dreaded silver face Twin Reverb and that chinky Strat sound, this is almost perfect. Bobby Whitlock is the man. Does anyone on earth have any other video of Derek and the Dominos playing live?

Clapton on heroin was some indescribable playing. Raw! But, of course I'm happier that he's still with us and clean! He's a true legend. A conqueror for sure.
I saw Eric Clapton in a village hall in Dundalk Ireland in 1979. I still have the programme that he autographed - WHILE playing the Layla riff - the stage was about two feet high and we were at the front -
It's evident from this video and from the Layla album that Bobby Whitlock and Delaney Bramlett were extreemly influential in Eric Clapton becoming the singer he is today !!!

@johnpaulgrfab4 BUT HE BEAT IT AND IS AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS. Even when his son fell 53 floors to his death, he didn't fall back into the old patterns. He even funds a facility for addicts. You go, Eric.
@mojoworknn..... I know I read his book Im a big fan since cream. (yes Im that old) He is a living legend. He overcame more then anyone should have to ...I admire him for that as well as his musical talents
How funny, the way the band is set up- I remember how "staged" TV shows seemed, but it was good to see ourbands on TV anyway. And we loved Johnny Cash, too.
Eric Clapton is a decent guitar player but incredibly overrated. He doesn't belong in the same conversation as Duane Allman or Billy Gibbons let alone Jimi Hendrix. He gets around the neck but his music is so boring you almost feel sorry for the guy. He gets points for being the first of the white blues-rock guys to mainstream, though. I had no idea until I saw this that Carl Perkins was a picker and not just a singer.
@jon1156 I love Clapton... Fantastic Guitar player... blues player.... but part of his draw is his songs... Phenomenal songwriter... Hendrix brought a new sound, but I think he is overrated... he played basic blues licks with a wah and a big muff fuzz pedal.... great... Bottom line is none of these guys hold a candle to the Albert King's and the old blues greats of old... Just my opinion anyway...
I remember seeing this live on the show at the tender age of 13. Boy have we gotten far away from this fantastic music and type of show....the good ole days! Perkins is just fabulous here as is Clapton, though he does look a bit intimidated during the break....way way cool!
I don't believe he was actually considered a member of the band. Clapton doesn't say he was in his book anyway. Another short blurb is on Wikipedia under Derek and The Dominoes.
Incredible respect shown from musician to musician, great rockabilly, this is classic with a very young Eric Clapton and still youthful Johnny Cash....
Eric, you're full of shite. "Not much in the way of 'real' music in England'?? Meaning that ballads that came to Appalacia and influenced Blugrass and Country don't count?
EC looks out of character w/o his trademark beard. It's pretty cool to see him perform on the show of another legend like Johnny Cash (RIP.) This must've aired after Duane Allman's (RIP) defection to the Allman Bros (or was he already dead at that time)? Derek & the Dominos were excellent.
@bucky468 Duane was already with the Allman Bros as a founding member, he worked with Clapton after meeting at an Allmans Show, and Clapton asked him to come hang out and Jam. After a few days of that, a lot of Derek and the Dominoes material was written, and/or recorded. All of this as per Clapton's Autobiography. "Clapton"
I WAS AT THIS TAPING ..CARL PERKINS AS THERE TOO ..HE AND CLAPTON COMPARED GUITARS BACKSTAGE ...LAYLA was out but they played BELL BOTTOM BLUES AND this song instead ..lol ..
Also, I always thought Derek and the Dominoes were a REAL rock'n'roll band with roots in the '50s but ever aware of the everything that came after with none of the acidrock/heavy metal/pyschedelia trappings. After all, Eric had already done all that with Cream anyway. Just good funky songs with some much needed humanity.
Eric always kept it straight and PURE blues licking guitar! Thank God fo Clapton and his sense of tradition. This is one great performance captured on The Johnny Cash Show -- and Bobby Whitlock really stands out as the talent he was. Fantastic YouTube video. Thanks to whomever posted it!
@whbjr0riginal your right, clapton's solo on matchbox sounded berry much like chuck berry...i think that most guitar players back then started out copying Berry..he's how you play rock and roll...he wrote the book! then Clapton like many others dug deeper and found the blues and 2 dozen other styles to be influenced by
@Zeo500 Amen brother! Good talent and good equipment in it's simplest form. The magic of this type of entertainment is gone! Not to mention quality human beings that had class. Don't you wish you could turn on the TV and see a show like this today???
A much better band with Dwayne Allman forcing Eric to play.

@iamnotguilty1 yeah, you better give eric clapton some guitar tips. his career ain't goin' anywhere with that sort of tone. ...puh-lease.

Fantastic!

I looked up "class act" in the dictionary and a picture of Johnny Cash was next to it !

Eric, you're full of shite. "Not much in the way of 'real' music in England'?? Meaning that ballads that came to Appalacia and influenced Blugrass and Country don't count?

Bobby Whitlock is a fixture today in the Austin Music scene.

EC looks out of character w/o his trademark beard. It's pretty cool to see him perform on the show of another legend like Johnny Cash (RIP.) This must've aired after Duane Allman's (RIP) defection to the Allman Bros (or was he already dead at that time)? Derek & the Dominos were excellent.
bucky468 1 year ago
@bucky468 Duane was already with the Allman Bros as a founding member, he worked with Clapton after meeting at an Allmans Show, and Clapton asked him to come hang out and Jam. After a few days of that, a lot of Derek and the Dominoes material was written, and/or recorded. All of this as per Clapton's Autobiography. "Clapton"
arjis06 1 year ago
@arjis06 So Duane wasn't really a member of Derek & the Dominos? He was only a sessions musician that EC asked to join in D & the D's?

Awesome! Perkins is my fave!
Also, I always thought Derek and the Dominoes were a REAL rock'n'roll band with roots in the '50s but ever aware of the everything that came after with none of the acidrock/heavy metal/pyschedelia trappings. After all, Eric had already done all that with Cream anyway. Just good funky songs with some much needed humanity.
missionrd100 1 year ago
Eric always kept it straight and PURE blues licking guitar! Thank God fo Clapton and his sense of tradition. This is one great performance captured on The Johnny Cash Show -- and Bobby Whitlock really stands out as the talent he was. Fantastic YouTube video. Thanks to whomever posted it!

Playing with Carl Perkins... Clapton plays like Chuck Berry! I love it.
whbjr0riginal 1 year ago
@whbjr0riginal your right, clapton's solo on matchbox sounded berry much like chuck berry...i think that most guitar players back then started out copying Berry..he's how you play rock and roll...he wrote the book! then Clapton like many others dug deeper and found the blues and 2 dozen other styles to be influenced by

@Zeo500 Amen brother! Good talent and good equipment in it's simplest form. The magic of this type of entertainment is gone! Not to mention quality human beings that had class. Don't you wish you could turn on the TV and see a show like this today???
