XD Well at least I have most of my plans ready...unlike most people I know BTW this video may have ended up being a chatroom for us...
Interesting is the style, european way to do it you draw the bow by moving it up and keep the hand pulling the string pretty much in place (so the arm holding the bow does draw the string)
Do the bows used in Japan have less pull? (an serious walisian war bow started at about 150pounds, to penetrate plate armor)
Regarding style the Japanese way wins, but i wonder if one can pull the same doing it the overhead way.
Regarding the mindset i think booth types even out, to hit you need toconcentrate.
@philsnk Depends what materials you make the bow from, Walisian wooden longbows where of equal size and where able to penetrate plate armor.
Shorter bows trade in precision if you do not use fiberglass and stabilisers because the moment you shoot you loosen the grip so the bow needs either more mass or more length to remain stable, the moment you shoot the bow pretty much is free floating, maintaining a strong grip would mess the aim up.
@TheJapanChannelDcom ...are you serious?! Ive seen even Italian yew English Longbows cost half that. I think the most expensive bow ive seen was close to $1,500. Though a yumi probably takes more time and effort to make. So I guess its justified. 30,000 yen isnt that bad though, but im sure it would be made of synthetic materials rather than real wood and bamboo.
@LotusDragon09 Demand and status plays a role too, an traditional english longbow handmade with traditional materials takes as much effort to make, but there is no market for that in europe above the curiosity level.
@PounceTeazle Im not sure if the demand is big, but there definitely is a demand. However, I dont think I can agree with you on English Longbows taking as much effort to make as a Japanese yumi though. A yumi is constructed with a lot more complexity. The EL is just a single piece of yew wood (ideally, as there are examples of hickory or oak with different wood as backing since yew is expensive). It needs to be tillered, but still just a simple stick.
To make it a GOOD one you need to keep the change of diameter the same in booth arms and know exactly how to shape it, or your stick shoots arrows at odd angles.
You need to use wood grown right, dry it the right way, shape it to the millimeter the right way to get a good bow.
No matter if you use bamboo or wood, in booth cases you work at the materials limits to make it work good and that needs tons of knowledge and skill meaning many tries.
@PounceTeazle Well yeah. When I said "stick" I just meant it was a single piece of wood. A yumi is a lot more complex. It isnt a horn bow, but the process involves lamination as well as splitting bamboo and arranging it together properly. Both take a lot of work, dont get me wrong. Just that the English longbow is quite simple in its design. Thats what I meant. Oh also, there are records of EL's being slightly recurved, but doing that isnt really a complicated procedure.
@LotusDragon09 Maybe i worded it wrong, the bamboo bow is technically more advanced in terms of using laminates, but with EL you need to know exactly how to cut it out of the wood because the different densities in the wood have to act for your lack of lamination, so one to make you need more technical knowledge while the EL takes more knowledge about how the wood is build up, heart and sapwood.
With laminate you form the material, with pure wood you need to understand the inner workings of it.
@LotusDragon09 To add, simple design does not equal easy to make, the skill involved and the time it takes to produce an item is something else.
Today's modern bridges use VERY simple designs, but the skill in constructing them is anything but simple.
The difference is that in Japan bows are more a traditional thing so traditional made and in higher demand while in the west gfk composite is used, real EL bows do not have an high demand in such masses for that reason and are more an luxury item.
@PounceTeazle I see. Also, wood grain is very important. Its less of a problem if you are using raw staves than it is if you are using planks, but you should be using staves anyway. Even with a stave cut purposely for making a bow out of, knowing how the grain should be is critical. I hear good yew is hard to find. Makes sense though seeing as its so expensive. But yeah, I see what you mean about the demand thing now.
Wood grain is everything with bows cut out of grown wood, as much as the ability to laminate for bamboo build bows, booth cultures used what they had at hand, for Yew wood bows you depend more on the perfect tree that makes it an expensive wood.
As far i know they did grow yew especially for that purose back then.
The forms really are beautiful I have to admit... I love how they raise the arrow above their head, then bring it down perpendicular to their cheek sort of "locking" it in with form...
What rewards are Kyudo competitors winning? :-o Is it some new or better stuff for kyudo practice or just random picks and everytime something different to win?

are you a teacher? They don't allow archer in schools anymore,in elementary we had archer and it was really fun.I guess it because all school murders and rivals school gangs.Other thing the traditional japanese bow is different then tradional bow the use in the states and style of shooting different as well.
awesome vid thanks for making! by the way What kind of wood are the bows made out of and are they personal for each person like they dont just pick them up at the corner store???
the judges go to the targets after the shooting of the first four arrows and then after every arrow.
it´s very hard to hit the target four times, then the fifth time, the sixth time..
one mistake - you can go back to your home - medieval time: "one shoot - one life" - it means: if you miss the target/opponent - you will be dead, your opponent dont miss you!
you know you are in japan when you are filming large groups of kids walking down the street and NOT being spat on and called a pedo! they're so polite!
I don't think I'd have the patience to practice kyudo (or even watch it for any lengthy period of time, really), but I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for the opportunity to see more of Japan!
This would drive me crazy from anticipation! It looks interesting though!

@PounceTeazle Well yeah. When I said "stick" I just meant it was a single piece of wood. A yumi is a lot more complex. @308hitman308 Even if they should get hit, to kill with an arrow you need to use an war arrow and only twospots on the body would be lethal.
For competition you use rather light arrows and conical tips, so worst would be loosing a eye.
Given the competioners aim at the targets the risk to get hit standing there is very low.

@ichigo965 If you can shoot you shoot what you want to shoot, if you do not know how to shoot you do not take part in a competition...

are you a teacher? They don't allow archer in schools anymore,in elementary we had archer and it was really fun.I guess it because all school murders and rivals school gangs.Other thing the traditional japanese bow is different then tradional bow the use in the states and style of shooting different as well.

They are not made especially for us but we do choose the weight and length that is right for us.

hi i was just wondering is football big in japan?
NeffniGone 2 years ago
American football or soccer? Soccer is very popular in Japan, especially among school age kids. American football is not popular at all.

to atamtoner123:
the judges go to the targets after the shooting of the first four arrows and then after every arrow.
it´s very hard to hit the target four times, then the fifth time, the sixth time..
one mistake - you can go back to your home - medieval time: "one shoot - one life" - it means: if you miss the target/opponent - you will be dead, your opponent dont miss you!

you know you are in japan when you are filming large groups of kids walking down the street and NOT being spat on and called a pedo! they're so polite!

I don't think I'd have the patience to practice kyudo (or even watch it for any lengthy period of time, really), but I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for the opportunity to see more of Japan!

one of the things I love about the japanese is how they manage to stay in touch with their tradition

that seems like fun!

Definatly something I would Like to try. Using scopes with/ without magnification takes away some historic value, although I don't do it anymore.
Does evryone use the same kind of bow (draw weight), or are they different somehow? they look quite large. :)
Ricerguy 2 years ago
It varies from about 13kg to about 24kg
TheJapanChannelDcom 2 years ago
