They're nothing compared to the German commentators on Eurosport. Horrible, uninformed, boring and very bitchy. During the Olympics they actually complained about the Chinese girls' make-up. Among other things. I hate Eurosport in general, but during Beijing they actually made me yell at the tv.

Yes, she is. It didn't bother me that he called her stocky. What bothered me was that he said he didn't want to warm to her because she is "young and stocky". What does that mean? How rude!! Stocky young bodies have always made good gymnasts, it was an inappropriate to say it.

I can't believe that the commentator didn't want to like Shawn because of her "stockiness" that's absurd.

I didn't watch the 06 worlds... but judging on this performance, I absolutely have no idea how Ferrari won the AA. She's quite dreadful. Form breaks everywhere... she doesn't seem to have a lot of power, poise, or finesse. Was the field just lacking?

Yes, also Cheng Fei does it now. And in the past, Daniela Silivas was the first to do double-double (it is named after her) and I heard Boguinskaia did it as junior and also another Soviet girl the name of whom I don´t know but who was from Bogui´s generation. So I counted 6 girls I know of. There are probably more.

Priakhina and Boginskaya were the first ones to perform it in 1986, Silivas only did it once at the '88 Olympics, Groshkova did a double full-back out, Zamolodchikova, Cheng, Ferrari, Johnson, Pescek. That's 9 and I'm quite sure I'm forgetting someone! ;-D

American commentators do not shortchange international gymansts like ericmaine says; in fact, if you listen to the us commentators at these worlds, they went ON AND ON about how chinese gymnasts were way underscored on UB and BB.... check your facts and quit focusing on a person's nationality

Whats the big deal? Shawn may not be the most graceful( i think her dance is completely fine) but she dances more than most all the others (Ferari's is gross) AND sill tumbles more as well.....I dont see why people are so hard on Shawn. Shes the sparkle this sport has needed for YEARS.......

There's certainly not much to be impressed with in Shawn's dance or flexibility, but she really is a baby of the new code. Breathtaking dance, if any is to be seen these days, isn't rewarded so it seems silly to spend time working on it. I think it's a tragedy for the sport, and hopefully the code will be amended to swing the pendulum back after Beijing, but you can't really blame Shawn and her coaches for putting together her routines the way they do, or for emphasizing some things over others.

I think the judges comment about Shawn and her stocky-ness was just to do with the traditional look of the gymnastics. I mean 20 - 30 years ago practically all the top gymnastics were from Eastern European countries like Russia and Romania and had body shapes like Nastia Liukin. The judges just aren't used to Shawn's look and I really think she does, and a lot of the others, need to work on her dance moves as it really makes the performance breathtaking when done well.

i HEART shawn and hope that she'll make artistry her top priority before heading off to beijing. i'm surprised by how little (if at all) american commentators talk about the dearth of artistry in her routines. in non-US coverage (ie, chinese + here, british), commentators marvel at her athleticism but lament poor artistic presentation: ie, split leaps that aren't 180 on beam, not dancing all that much to energetic floor music, etc.

Man these commentators are really tuff on Sean Johnson. At first they said something along the lines of "it wouldnt be good for the sport if she won the all around," and now he said something like "I didnt want to like her because of her stalky ness". Wtf lol?

thats not what he said. he said that at first he didnt want to like her because of her lack of artistic dance and line but has grown to really appreciate the difficulty. Man you totally missed the meaning on that one.

Exactly my point. They chose to kind of pick on her throughout the competition about her body type. They did recognize her extreme level of difficulty but also highlighted her innability to be as gracefull as say Svetlanta khorkina. While I agree with them on that, I really had a hard time understanding why they didnt want her to win the all around just because they feel as if she takes away from the "beauty" of the sport. She reminds me of a mix between kim zimeskal and Domonique Moceanu.
