  • God bless you Johnny Cash. You were more than a country or folk singer.....you were and will always be an American icon

  • morally north had high ground but only as lincoln injected eman procl/gtty addr/2nd inaug adress, 2-4 yrs into war. at start, hands of north werent clean. theyd industrially profited off slave cotton & imposed crippling tarriffs on south wh/ benefited the north factories & railroads indust westward. Hence lincolng concluding all the blood was divine judgement on BOTH sides... Cash captures this b/c the avg poor white southerner fighting fought for pride of land & was left w/ sorrow & destitute.

  • many of you miss the point of this song. You're caught up analzying its meaning from todays view, when it was made to enlighten you to the mindset of a southerner THEN & the universal pain all feel who have to go thru war & its devasting effects... If your determined to focus on the political element, then at least put it in reference to those times. most southerners didnt own slaves & most of the soldiers saw it as trying to protect their lands from an invading indust power. continued next pg->

  • Your understanding of the Constitution and history in general is completely wrong.

First off 10 amendment my friend states rights.

Texas has the right to leave NOWHERE in the documents you mention does it say states cannot leave the union

  • The fact the US was willing to fight a war to enslave millions proves who the traitors are.

The federal government declared war on a people who voted to leave the union peacefully.

Texas belongs to Texans my dear brainwashed brother.

Texas is not yours to own it is not the Federal Governments to own it is ours we fought for it we won it and we pay for it, it is ours and fuck any man who tries to impose his will on our people

  • Fuck the south. Scum of the earth. Wish more of them died in the war.

  • @basehead617 Hello, I couldn't help but notice your comment and have to reply even though the content has nothing to do with the video or the music. First of all you have insulted me, my father, my mother, my brother, my sister, and have wished more senseless death on my ancestors. How is you hatred for the South and all southerners different from the South's "discrimination" against blacks. I put the word in quotes because the north wasn't exactly against slavery.Let me continue in another post

  • @basehead617 I hope you recieved my previous post also. Continued. I can easily make an arguement that the north was actually pro-slavery which is most people's reason why they don't like the South. I can also argue very easily that in all other apects the South was fighting for what was right and the north was basically treating the South as its own slave. I encourage you to give reason in an arguement to justify your statement. Starting with what you have it will be impossible. You can't.

  • @bpontillo You can't revise history, the Confederacy was a treasonous nation founded on slavery and it's complete bullshit to pretend otherwise. You've made no arguments, you've made inaccurate statements.

  • Yes, The CSA was based on money. The slaves were worth a lot of money. The slavocracy elite drove secession.

  • @labonneruerouge From our point of view yall declared war on the southern states after we voted to seceede peacefully.

America was formed on the belief that all humans have the right to self determination and when the southern states attempted to execise that right yall invaded us and killed 200 thousand of our citizens and burned countless acres of crops and several cities and dozens of settlements.

From our view the US betrayed us and there ideals in that war

  • @TexianPride The people of a state do not have a right to steal land and other resources from the United States, it's treason, it can't be "peaceful" because it's theft and an act of war. And bullshit the south believed in self-determination. They seceded because they wanted to keep other humans as slaves, they didn't give a shit about rights. If the people of the south wanted a nation built on racism and slavery, they should've got the hell out, not betrayed the nation they lived in.

  • @labonneruerouge Well with that logic Americans are slaves if we are unable to own property we pay for.

    Texas belongs to the Texans.

    Ohio belongs to Ohioans

    Tennessee belongs to the Tennessians.

And the Federal Government belongs to AMERICANS.

We Americans are not property as you would have us believe.

This land is our own not the Federal Governments.

If America is truely the land of the free how is it we will fight to free some and enslave others?

    America is a lie

  • @TexianPride People are very often not allowed to own items they pay for like drugs, sex slaves, etc and that is a good thing. If you choose to be a citizen of this country, you must obey the laws and if you don't you should be punished. The land of the United States does not belong to any one individual it belongs to all citizens and trying to steal it from them is a crime. If you hate America and its values so much, leave, no one is trying to keep you here.

  • @labonneruerouge I dont hate America in fact I love this country and I hate seeing it corrupted by people who see the America the way you do as a land with no freedom.

If Texas wants to seceede what buisness is it to californians?

Tennesseians should be aloowed to vote to leave the union if they feel its in there best interests why should people in idaho care?

If Vermont wants to leave why not let them this is the cornor stone of freedom, the ability to let the people choose

  • @TexianPride The confederacy was founded on slavery which is prohibited in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. And you don't love this country because you hate everything it stand for like freedom, general welfare and union- America was built on these principals and despite your efforts, they aren't going to change. The state of Texas is not an independent nation it is a region that belongs to the US and to steal that region is totally illegal according to the Constitution and SC.

  • @labonneruerouge Slavery prohibited by the constitution and declaration of independance?

Do you realize all most all of these people who wrote those words WERE SLAVE HOLDERS?

Thomas Jefferson argueable the most famous of our founding fathers he wrote half of the US's founding documents he was a slave owner as he wrote the words all men are created equal.

Im not talking about the Confederacy Im talking about states rights.

  • @labonneruerouge the south was not founded on slavery. very little southerns could afford a slave.

  • @bobbyperrault2 slavery and the plantation was the heart of the southern economy so the fact that the poorer class couldn't afford them means nothing. and someone obviously never took american history.

  • @labonneruerouge

The Civil War was not completely about slavery... You also need to learn the real history of the Civil War

  • Comment removed

  • @labonneruerouge the slaves wernt freed until half way through the war dumb ass

  • @bobbyperrault2 Was that supposed to prove some kind of point?

  • @labonneruerouge ohh shit sorry man that was meant to be sent to someone else sorry

  • @labonneruerouge plantation was the center of the southern economy but the thing about it all was that most southerns were too poor to own slaves and yes i took American history

  • @bobbyperrault2 that's my point...

  • @basehead617 by the way

    sent from North Carolina

  • @basehead617 whoa u might wanna back up better watch wat u say some rebel like me might take offense and we dont play well with others

  • Comment removed

  • STOP ARGUING AND LISTEN TO THIS WONDERFUL MUSIC!!!!!!!

  • The best voice for this song!!! I've always loved Cash!!! he was one if not thee greatest that ever was...

  • this is a awsome song,,,,but this version sux,,,,,go check out the black crows version

  • @pentopaper11 Hey go check out > Go fuck yourself .

  • I love all the morons saying anything about this being a southern song. This song was written by a Canadian. I love this song. But ya'll are retarded.

  • long live johnny's songs.great shit.

  • Hey guys... did you know the South whupped the tar out of the North for the first half of the war? Why? Because all the northern generals were about as dumb as a piece of wood. It wasn't until attrition came into play that the North started winning. That, and Abe decided to step in. Also, first Republican President freed the slaves. First black President is a Democrat.

Irony, thy name is politics. *whistles Dixie and walks away*

  • @UBERMonkeyButtface it was the introduction of the repeating rifle that finished us, the corruption of Confederate government, abusing of the populace, and traitorous citizenry and internecine fighting doomed us. As far as engagements the C.S.A. always could have prevailed, there were limitations placed upon the struggle at every turn, serious disadvantages, the same we face today...

  • the south will rise again haha jk but this is a great song

  • the only good thing to come out of the south

  • @jefsin1 why dont you say that to a southerners face you fuckin pussy peice of shit.

  • @jekkell99 i'm shocked you can read and write, keep up the good work.

  • @jefsin1 yea im pretty smart but thanks i will keep up the good work, You just keep being a stupid fuckin piece of shit. oh tell your mom her pussy smelled like shit you need to clean that shit out not like how you do normally with your dick like buy and douche and use it on her oh yea thanks for commenting keep bein a bitch. :)

  • @jefsin1 Anything that comes from the South is a GOOD THING....

  • @ChristianSoldier1944 i was just joking, i don't mean to insult anybody, i'm not a liberal,i like everyone, dos'nt matter where you come from.

  • Shame we don't have the man in black singing it with The Band...THAT would have been something!

  • this is the first time i've heard Cash's cover and im liking it. His voice suits the song really well. I do love The Bands version though.

  • When Johnny died I figured it would a national spectacle along the lines of an Elvis death.... but it wasn't. On the other hand I was amazed at the reaction when Elvis died in August of 1977. I was staying in a Holiday Inn in Casper, WY when the news broke. I thought it was just going to be in the news for a couple of days like when any other has-been star died. Was I ever wrong!

  • Love you Johnny!!

  • Joan Baez's version of this song is the best! Just her and her guitar makes it perfect.

  • Johnny Cash was to country music what John Wayne was to westerns. Both are Icons and irreplaceable.

  • Don't know why people keep saying listen to the band, good yes, original as far as i know, but Joan Baez is by far the best version.

  • @zaftra because its their song. u might wanna get ur ears checked homey

  • @3tp I'm well aware of who's song it is, the clue was when I wrote, 'original as far as I know'. May I suggest an optician? May explain your incredibly poor grasp of English. erm, yo, yo, yo, blud, I believe that is the correct response.

  • Rarely, do we hear such talent and compassion.

  • Johnny Cash is the effing man. I'm only 19 years old, and didn't have the honor of "growing up" listening to his music and witnessing his uprising. But I wish I could've. I love his music, and will be passed down to my kids. An absolute legend. Bravo Mr. Cash, you will be kept in many hearts including my own.

  • Weird how Johnny Cash can sing about anything and still sound better that anyone else thats trys it .

  • John is a true American and Southerner

  • @johncashrocks221 love him and im a southerner as south as it gets south island of nz is south as it gets and i fel what your saying white brother

  • john sings this song the best!

  • A good version, but it should be considered a criminal offence for anyone but Levon Helm to sing this song.

  • @MrConeman I think Johnny Cash should be an exception though.

  • Miss you Johnny :(

  • "Stone Man's" cavalry?

  • @thestarwriters Stonewall Jackson, perhaps?

  • @CommodoreHorton

I know who it was referring to, it's just the original version says Stonewall's cavalry.

  • @thestarwriters no it doesn't. listen again (to the original by The Band). general Stoneman was notorious for his terribly brutal treatment of southerners.

  • @thestarwriters No, its Stohman the yankee guerilla commander with a specialty for wrecking rail lines, which were very effective in the last years of the Confederacy when the rail links were a vital lifeline.

  • Johnny Cash has his own style, but the original version by The Band is a far superior.

  • @Voltara its pretty much impossible to do it better than The Band!

  • And General Jackson died of complications in 1863, not before the War. Had Jackson not succumbed and had General Stuart arrived on time in Pennsylvania, the War night have gone on quite longer. General Lee had not eyes and Longstreet hesitated. Without the cav, artillery will fire high thus overshooting. Need to be able to see. Everyone mentions Sherman, but look at Sheridan in the Valley. Virginia was destroyed.

  • 830 comments and very little accurate history. Baez changed "Stoneman's" to "so much" cavalry. The song was written by a Canadian. Stoneman left Knoxville TN in March of 1865 and wound up headed to Salisbury NC down through Danbury. He had terrible piles. Don't know how he rode in a saddle. Stoneman was not in Danville but his men did tear up quite a bit of rail. Was a bad time in VA and NC.

  • Excerpt from the Johnny Cash history of the American Railroad documentary : 'Ridin' The Rails'. Performing an acoustic version of The Band's song; 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down'

  • IT IS HISTORY NOT RACIST

  • I love Joan Baez and I love Cash. But Cash takes the cake

  • Sounds terrific with Cashs' baritone...LOVE this song....and I'm a yankee...LOL!!!

  • Long live old Dixie!

  • The song "Dixie" might be considered racist, not this one...

  • The Band's version is my favourite

  • It was in the last waltz by the band.

  • @IETCHX69 I stand corrected.

  • song is sad, and uplifting at the same time, baez version is too up beat, Cash has the feeling.

  • who ever think this song is racist is and f-----ing dumb a--! Really people think about the song is about war and loss so many yong men.

  • Thank you for posting this. Seems the debate on the whys and wherefores are still Trolling their way through the comment section. I am pretty partial to the band's version of this song. (Since Leon did write it and all.) but this is Johny Cash we are talking about! This song rocks. Oh and for those who follow comments, just so you don't think I was sniping from the shadows I have my Grandfather's Capture paperwork from Vicksburg. I have my other Grandfather's NCO Sword who fought against him.

  • @NMMojavePoet robbie robertson wrote this

  • Well Texan, last count was around 500,000 dead, and both sides were american. The American Civil war is considered to be the first "modern" war with the use of aircraft (balloons) and submarines (CSS Hunley) But it sucks that the war was fought, period.

  • It doesent matter if the attrocities were to end the war the end does NOT jusify the means and many men and women and even children died because of Sherman and Lincoln obviously did not care enough about these southern victoms as he congradulated Sherman on his victory. Let me put it this way Lincoln turned a blind eye to inhumane treatment of southern pows look up camp douglas. He allowed his generals to wage war on civilians and still you call him a hero.

  • @TexianPride hay hows talking about that fat bag of shit-sherman?

  • @redconfederate Well its goin pretty good most of these yankees see the war in long term they dont think about the loss of life that happened. They want to simply it as Sherman marched accross the south to end the war they dont care to think what he did to end it.

Its the same story the yankees just want to think of Lincoln saveing the nation by winning the war they dont want to think about how he started the war and how he won it.

  • Cash is king.

Just listened to versions by the band and also Joan Baez.

Johnny is the best, then there's the rest.

  • Dixie! Dixie! Dixie!

  • I love how polarizing this song is because it's not a political song. It's a song about being american. About being from the south and loving both country and family. Race is not an issue in theis song at all just the harsh reality of the civil war. The songs Character could almost equally been from the North. It's about the individual experiance not the political agenda.

  • @avonzodiac Great, great comment, avon!!! I would love to hear either political party promote itself and its candidates by praising the idea that we are all Americans. NOT how dastardly and evil the other political party is. Democrats started that strategy and are truly expert at it. However, many Repubs are good at it, too ...... to the detriment of all of us.

  • yankeees are brainwashed parasites.. dixie forever.

  • Good on ya Johnny... you actually sing the correct lyrics!!

  • Most of you are so mixed up..This is a anti war song from

the Southern point of view...It has NOTHING to do with racism...

  • God bless the Flag of the Stars and Stripes

  • As an Aussie who has just read a great deal on your american civil war, I can only say that it is hard to imagine what it must have been like with literally brother against brother. However surely this is one of the most healing versions of this song around. Gotta get there some day btw.

  • yeah i'm a hater ! i hate subhuman trash that want to destroy my heritage ! they call it human rights !

  • all jew zionist , nigger , homo , commie scum , must die ! for the continuation of humanity , otherwise we are doomed !

  • northerners can fly the flag of zionist jews with pride ! cos thats what they fought for !

  • @goodforagiggle Listen, I love Dixie and America. You can respect The great Southern States without attacking American States.

  • by my brother above me !

  • How can anyone possibly think this song has racist sentiment? It is only professing the defeated, downtrodden demeanor of a proud cultural entity. And it does so perfectly with so much pent up emotion.

I think this country is due for a musical great awakening, in which musicians (actual musicians) bring back these solid, fundamental roots of rock n roll - the greatest form of music ever. Bring back music with instruments and intelligence!

  • many southerners use flags and songs and slogans that clearly represent the south, and yet northerners seldom use such things to represent the north. i can't think of a northern equivalent to the confederate flag, or a northern equivalent to the song "dixie". i can't think of any bumper stickers displaying someone's northernness. though each northern state has its own flag, i can't think of one representing the north as a whole. i guess northerners are more willing to forgive and to forget.

  • @coventrygardens idk what ur talking about eny more with the flags and stuff but hees my southern bro and ill fite right next to him till the death if i have to.

  • BEAUTIFUL song.... his voice adds so much to the actual song it's so lovely

  • i thinck "Levon Helm" is better at singing this song

  • this sucks ass

  • @1888gp you suck ass. you just disrespected two of the greatest things in the world. Johnny Cash and Dixie itself.. shame on you

  • @AlakimSirrah how did i disrespect the south u fool.......i love the bands version of this song.....but johnny cash singin this is crap, hence my comment this sucks ass

  • @AlakimSirrah ya shame on u! ya yankee jurk!

  • @redconfederate me? a yankee??? what are you on? what makes you think im a damn yankee?

  • though i am an admitted racist, it is absurd for anyone to claim that this song does not uphold racist principles.

  • Worst version of life.

  • The Band and Johnny Cash both had great Versions.

  • The Band is so much better.

  • Virgil Caine is a loser, ha ha.

  • greetings from brasil

  • What CD is this on? I really liked it. Johnny Cash is so awesome.

  • Kinda slow!!!!!

  • @ jookeryou got that right ,brit here and totally agree took me 5000 miles across the atlantic i have been california , new york and most states inbetween best i have been are the southern states ,louisiana, texas georgia ,made welcome by total strangers .. long live the souths hospitality as you said " fucking beautiful souls"

  • my favorite song when driving semi i ofen catch myself speeding.

  • this is the perfect song to haul in the cabover pete and go about 105 miles an hour just makes u high

  • "...take what you need & leave the rest..." awesome...thank you.

  • awesome

  • From another southern girl, thank you for realizing that we're not like southerners are protrayed on tv - and, we're very proud!

  • this needs to be in a movie........is it?

  • @elonfootball73 not to my knowledge, or at least not sung by johnny cash

  • @sakiLOVER Johnny Cash: Ridin' the Rails, he sung about a minute of it, just him and his guitar, simply beautiful

  • @elonfootball73

    the last waltz!

  • @elonfootball73

the last waltz but sung by 'the band'

  • @elonfootball73 you`r right--'Ridin' The Rails'. is the name of the movie!!! :)

  • @elonfootball73

the name of the movie is-"Ridin the Rails"-

  • I live in Alabama. It's sad when playing "Dixie" is considered racist.

Bravo. No one can sing it like Johnny Cash.

  • @TheLollygagger Abraham Lincoln actually requested "Dixie" after Lee surrendered. There's nothing racist about it, or shouldn't be, in any decent person's opinion.

  • @TheLollygagger Funny nobody talks smack about Jerry Garcia for covering this. And the Jerry Garcia band had Black members- Melvin Seales, the Black keyboardist, goes high-octane when performing this...truly impressive. It's like he's ready to don a gray uniform despite his Black skin.

  • @TheLollygagger this song in " SOUTH " is considered racist ? o.o

  • @TheLollygagger it's not racist...but I love any song or story that talks about kicking the south's ass during the Civil War! Dixie lost it's best friend in Lincoln! The night theyd rove o'l dixie down is when Lincoln was assasinated.

  • @GrizzlTooth Ya know im 12 and from Pennslyvania and I will personly kick anyones ass to defend Dixie...Including my family and certanly YOU

  • @GrizzlTooth Lincoln its best friend? ha pretty funny lol

Lincoln throughout the war aloud his generals to comit attrocities against southerners.

  • @TexianPride aloud? first off it's allowed...not aloud...2ndly...he never allowed atrocities. He allowed the decimation of the south's ability to resist and wage war. He held malice towards none and considered us all brother. After Lincoln was killed, the South lost an advocate. Lincoln favored a full restoration of the union without reparations...

  • @GrizzlTooth I reread that and knew I fucked it up it pays to take your time lol

He allowed the generals to burn civilian crops which harmed civilians more then soldiers he allowed the burning of Atlanta which was not to end the war as most Confederates had retreated from Atlanta. He allowed the decimation of the souths abilty to resist by allowing his generals to target civilians use confederates as human shields and burned down countless towns those are attrocities all commited to end the war

  • @TheLollygagger especially when blacks fought for the south as well. Thats what happens when people neglect history for modern mindless entertainment. Johnny Cash's version has more authenticity than anyone else's.

  • @TheLollygagger I remember Johnny Cash hosting a special from the Ford Theater in Washington many years ago. Cash was a serious history buff and he stated that just before Lincoln, seated in his box, was shot, he requested that the band play "Dixie". The tune was written by a Northerner and was Lincoln's favorite song. It was even played at his inauguration! It's a great tune!

  • @TheLollygagger Except maybe Levon Helm =D

  • Deo Vendice...

  • Cash had a way of making all songs great in a different way.

  • Actually, the idea of sending slaves back to Africa originated about 6 decades

earlier with folks like Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe .. that is why when

Monroe was president he sent Marines to liberate what is now Liberia -- to be the

place where American slaves could be sent and they named the capital of Liberia ..Monrovia after him.

  • Actually, the idea of sending slaves back to Africa originated about 6 decades

Monroe was president he sent Marines to liberate what is now Liberia -- to be the

  • hell yeah jookkor. its changed but the farm my daddy and my family lives on here in garrard ky is the one my family faught for so im proud to be from the south

  • It's almost funny listening to all you morons grovel over who's "racists". The whole concept of a 'nation' is a "people, a race". Hence why our founding fathers limited American citizenship to only "freed white men". Now anyone can be an "American". Our cesspool of a country is nothing more than the tip of the spear for the New World Order.

God Bless the South, who fought for our founding fathers principles of Christianity and ethno-nationalism.

  • Does Anybody realize that Lincoln was gonna send all the slaves back to Africa? This is the reason he was shot. yes Lincoln was a racist

  • @bigguy79430 thank you! I've been saying that, and Idiots just give me quotes on him saving the Union.

  • @bigguy79430 We should have sent them back to their home. It would have saved both them and the rest of us alot of trouble and grief. Slavery is heinous and should have never occured. NO MAN shoul be a slave. Once this country outlawed it, we should have given the slaves a first class trip back to Africa. That way, they would have to hyphenate their heritage....they could simply have remained Africans.

  • @DDay6565 Liberia and the American Colonization Society tried

  • slavery was not officially outlawed until 1994

  • @boradone1 the ratification of the bill that abolished slavery was passed in december of 1865, at least in the united states

  • @sakiLOVER .o my bad thats what thhey teached me in school

  • woow what a great cover

  • The song

  • It is important to note that not all Southerners were slaveowners. Having a Slave was the equivalent of having a Mercedes in those days. The upper class mainly held slaves, like Washington and General Lee. However, they made the racial distinction and allowed poor whites to be "free" so that they could maintain the institution of slavery together by making a "white vs." black distinction for slavery and the ruling class. The rich always control the feeble minded.

  • @bluesboy25000 Agreed - and many Northerners were slaveowners including the likes of U S Grant. The war wasn't about freeing slaves. It just happened to be one of the only good things to come out of it.

  • No politics, this is just better.

  • Johnny Cash~ at it's best! Nancy B. Brewer author of Carolina Rain.

  • unfortunately we edit history so it sounds better . . . truth be told Lincoln was a racist who quite probably didnt have the right to wage war against states exercising what was most likely ttheir rights to succeed from the union . tons of documentation tells us so . . . (the un edited version of history )

  • @ sheilane again

that was his plaform but the sourthern states had already succeded its a fallacy that somehow its about slaves and some seem to think thats all tha mattered as a brit if i can find the truth surely your fellow americans can ?

  • @ sheilane i aint even american but have a bit of knowledge of history (its a british thing) i am not trying to say one side is better than the other but itis a fact the north had no right declaring war on the condfederate states they had the right to leave any time they chose dont matter what the reasons (and if you lot going on about cotton fields etc learn your history wasnt about slaves ) anyway most giving it the south is racist pobably aint been anywhere down south

  • you guys suck, this song is a historical ballad, quit trying to use it for you arguments about "states rights" and obama i'm from the south, oh and the CIVIL WAR KILLED MORE AMERICANS THAN ANY OTHER WAR, if you take pride in that you are a dumbass!!!!!

  • Oh yeah--stupid yankees that the South is still like Easy Rider or Bonny and Clyde are narrow minded--personally in my opinion ya'll can stay north of the Mason-Dixon if you can't come here with an open mind to the new South

  • love the south ,brit here anyone hates the confederacy have a check on the constituanal rights when the union was formed , any who wanted was allowed to leave the union so the 13 states did and what happened then .. illigal war on the confederates exercising there rights

  • brit here gotta say the us civil war was illigal when the states signed up in the constitution every state had the right to leave the 13 states chose to dont matter the reasons that was there right and it wasnt about slavery that came later and when emancipation became an issue half the north soldiers deserted cos they didnt want to fight fellow americans over that issue ,right or wrong and i do beleive slavery is wrong that is not what the south was fighting for

  • @truimphsrule

Actually, slavery was the platform that Lincoln chose to run on, he thought that would get him elected...which it did, but you are right, the civil war was not about slavery, not for the south anyway
