all you debating grabbing this amp......stop and go get it.....it is an AWSOME amp for home and small gigs. quite loud too! i have a custom shop strat and a gibson es 339 (57 classics) and they both sound great...... love the humbuckers through it! breaks up around 5 or so depending on the pups and the tremelo is sutle but nice. reverb is classic fender but is quite strong so i never go above 3. all in all im happy! very mellow
I'm debating selling my deluxe reverb and getting this. I played it today and it sounded fantastic. Great bass response for such a small speaker. I need to hear it with a les Paul, tho. I play at church and I'm sure it's plenty loud. I can only get the deluxe up to 2 (maybe 2 1/2) before its waaay too loud.
Wow, the amp sounds amazing! But I really am curious about how far it can stay clean. Like can it get very loud without getting too distorted? Like if I was playing a somewhat small gig and I was playing the amp by itself and I wanted a straight clean tone. Do you think it would work out?
@goss1961 I am assuming that as a Fender dealer, they are required to use Fender guitars to demo Fender amps. But Fender does own Gretch, so that would make a good demo. An old Guild Bluesbird would also be awesome, although I am sure PGS wants to demo instruments that are actually in production.
My very first amp was a 1965 Fender Princeton Tremolo amp. I loved that amp. Wonderful sound. That was back in high school in the 60's..... opp, showing my age! LOL!
@PF1964 There are too many amps on the market to say that about any of them and not have some jackass go "Yeah, well, I liek teh handweird Vox AC15 better." Incidentally, I like the hand-wired Vox AC15 better.
Yeeaaahh, good annotation there, PGS. I'd say most of us, your fans, are smart enough to know nothing that said "Fender" on it had rosewood until '59;):)
Love blackfaces, tho, so it's an easy mistake to overlook! lol Any videos (or plans for videos) on the Super?? One of my dream amps, that magical 4x10:D
@PF1964 I have the blues Jr and it could probably be louder for gigs but I am finding it not fitting my nitche anymore. The bass or low end is too muddy for me. The Princeton sounds awsome to me and would be great for home use and recording but I am worried it may not be nought for a jam session.
@jgmedina Nah you can turn it down low enough not to bug anyone and still get a great tone...it'll just always sound better when the volume's up high as in this demo. Hope this helps!
Great, great-sounding amp, but I have to wonder if it can handle your basic club gigs. The Blues Deluxe (also 15 watts) can handle it, but it has a 12" speaker instead of a 10" like this one, and I think that makes a significant difference. I'm not sure the 10" can cut it with an unmikedclub gig where you have to rely on your amp-volume to be heard. That's why the Deluxe (22w, I think) and the Hot Rod Dlx (40w) are so-perfect for gigging. I guess the Princeton would be fine if you could mic it.
Are there any other differences between this and the old Vibro Champ amps besides the bigger speaker and addition of reverb? Like, any differences in the circuit?
This is one of the reissues Fender got right. Very full sounding, no rattles, lush 'verb, good tremolo. Have one in my home studio. very reliable too. The Wrecking Crew(Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco, James Burton, etc) would have loved this one, but they were using the real handwired ones. Andy pulling that Wrecking Crew '60s Cali tone, lol. Nice job, Andy. Another top notch demo.
This is a beautiful sounding amp! I think this is the one I would go for. So what do they mean when they say you have to turn a Twin Reverb up to ear splitting levels to get the "tone"? Do you have to play the Princeton loud for it to sound good? I was thinking of a practice amp.
@Fishpigg according to Jim Campilongo he uses it for small gigs and it's actually loud enough that he has to face it away from the crowd because it does push a lot of sound. I played it at GC a few months back and never turned it up past five or six and that was decently loud, but it all depends on the gig and the drummer in question. wouldn't suggest it if you're looking for an amp for an unmic-ed gig where you're going to play a lot of clean tones.
@dnpqkc these sound (to me) so much sweeter than the Deluxe reverbs.I have wanted one of these for a long time but everytime i get some money saved to buy another rig i wind up buying a Marshall or an old Bassman or something. not this time..
i like the eric johnson style tone, i'm clueless as to go about to reach the sound, maybe a blues jr or princeton 65 with a good overdrive , maybe a ocd or a rockbox boiling point? any suggestions? anyone?
I use a Jekyll and Hyde overdrive and love it, I'm sure you can achieve something close to it using that and a Fender Reverb deluxe. Some friends of mine compare my tone to his, but I think it might be because he's one of my greater influences.
Sorry for my newbishness, but I have a question! With this amp, is it always in reverb? or is there a channel for without reverb, and then another channel you switch to for the reverb?
Thank you for posting this! I have a '67 Tele and a '67 Pro Reverb (Since new) so I have a fairly good point of reference to judge the Princeton. It sounds great and very vintage. Your demo is excellent providing a wide range of sounds and capabilities of the amp.
@yahoochiewatchie I tried both at the shop and bought the Princeton. Just sounded better to me - sweeter and punchier. Trust your ears. And remember, Deluxe has two "channels" - three inputs (one straight up, the other one is the vibrato channel). And the DRRI 12'' speaker makes a lot of difference, more bass and more headroom, louder and slightly brighter. If that's what you're looking for, go for the Reverb. I have seen several amp demos' where a microphone is set up in front of the amp, two questions, why and where is the output from the amp coming from...?? another amp???? Please elaborate on the use of the Mic ...
@foxloner they use a mic because it produces a very true sound and some amps dont have a direct output on them so this is the only method of recording the sound clearly
@foxloner - I would recommend getting a good book on audio recording, first of all. As far as our basic recording signal chain, it's as follows: Andy's guitar -> Pedals -> Amplifier -> Amplifier is recorded using Royer R121 Ribbon Mic -> Mic is amplified by Universal Audio 610 tube preamp -> RME Fireface Soundcard -> Sony Vegas audio/video software. Hope this helps.
@MrJackanthony - Yes indeed sir, that's the idea anyway. Our ultimate sonic goal is always "amp in the room with you" realism. I think we get as close as anyone.
@ProGuitarShopDemos This reverb, along with the Hot Rod DeVille's real Fender spring reverb, doesn't obnoxiously clank or pop like all spring reverb stomp boxes seem to do. I loved the reverb in my old DeVille that I sold, I wanna get a pedal to re-create it for my Marshall, but all the pedals clank and pop, not like the real amp reverb.
@ProGuitarShopDemos you can actually hear what it sounds like if you have realtek hd audio driver for pc and turn on voice cancellation effect. and you can use it to hear background music too!
@foxloner he is recording the sound from the amp, then overlaying that on the video so you hear what the amp sounds like through a quality microphone instead of a super compressed video camera microphone. too many people on youtube try to do reviews without realizing that the sound they get through the camera mic will never be what it actually sounds like.
i'm probably gonna get killed 4 asking this question but what a hell i'll ask it anyway- princeton 65 reverb or blues junior?? for small gigs of course!
Actually a good question. I bought a Blues Junior NOS and loved it. However, it doesn't have captive tube sockets and gigging alot the 12ax7s come loose and fall out. Reverb is thin. I bought a Princeton reissue and love it. Both are good but if you have the cash, go with the Princeton. Its a better built amp and really delivers the sound.
@MikeNvS yeah, IMHO one of the best reviews on net... not only because of the gear, but the actual idea what to play and know-how to play it good. Very cool!
they're entirely different amps and don't really compare at all, beyond the fact that both have fender clean tones. otherwise it's pretty much apples and oranges, i think.
The Hot Rod is the best selling amp in the world, and can be made for much less in Mexico using cheap (crappy) parts and PCB boards. A Princeton like this one cost more to make. Please buy a Hot Rod as the 15 watts in a Princeton is not enough for you. You need a Hot Rod.
lol id like to see the statistics you use cause im pretty sure fender twins, vox ac30, plexi's are still the worlds top selling amps hot rods have no signature tone to themselves like other classic amps its just a cheap (like you said) fender tube with higher gain, they are good amps for the moeny i suppose but thise is def better and tone isnt measured in watts buddy
i have a deluxe reverb and i play it alot at 6-7, the thing is tone sounds bad straight in front of it. so ill either stand in my hallway or in my bathroom and its not loud
is pro guitar shop an actual store i can go visit and buy stuff or is it just internet order only. Cause Andy you're a cult icon. and i would drive all the way from seattle to see you at the shop.
i like this tube saturation sound when cranking it. i own a fender super champ xd that sounds in many ways like this though it is not all pure valve.
the thing is i don't get the tube saturation when cranking it, at least not by volume after 6, 7 and beyond is way to loud, would need an attenuator to try it. any other ways to get a power tube saturation sound earlier??
i know princeton is many times better then super champ xd but i want to get the most out of my amp, maybe i can get close.
i was thinking of getting one of these very soon, duz anybody have anything negative to say about them i should know about (please exclude volume and watts thnx)
Sounds great. But theres one thing i don't really get... Is there any big differences between DRRI and PRRI if you look at the sound, or is it most the volyme? And does this little amp got a good blues tone, thats what i play most :D
I've auditioned both side by side and can tell you the Princeton is much lighter and brighter than the Deluxe - great if you like clean funk or jazz tone and cranked gives you a nice biting blues voice. The Deluxe has more bottom end and will punch just a little harder. Great thing about them is they both use 6V6 power tubes as opposed to the more common EL84's used in most 15 watters.
Princeton Reverb is the best amp I've ever played. I was in my local Academy of Sound and was there for like 3 hours with the amp and a Tele'. I was blown away, and most of the staff there were blown away that a teenager wanted one.
Great review. This is one sweet amp. I have DRRI also for gigs where more volume is needed. But I find Gibson 57 Humbuckers break them both up really quick. So I put a Celestion Alnico Blue in the DRRI. (Incredible difference) In the Princeton amp to keep costs down I went for a Eminence Ragin' Cajun 10 inch. (You can run the volume way up and keep it clean. It is just wonderful with Fender guitars clean.) They are great stock but man with upgraded speakers they are awsome.
I'd say the biggest difference is the speaker - DR has 12" and PR has 10". But another difference would be that the DR has two channels. The sound is still pretty similar, I happen to think the Princeton is darker and warmer sounding, where the Deluxe can get a lot brighter.
I've got one of these amps, and every time I play through it, I appreciate it more every time. It sounds so good, I just play direct into it (either Telecaster or Ibanez Talman TC630). And playing 25 feet away from the amp sounds so nice ... sitting further back from the amp makes my whole lounge room become one big speaker box, so you just get good smooth tone and no harshness. Of course, this would apply to any amp, but a Princeton in a small room is just not doing it justice.
Okay, I'm confused. Would two of these in stereo be any louder than one? Logic would dictate that the difference would be small if noticeable at all, but from what I've heard, it's much louder...
I set up two fender princetons in stereo and my perception is that they are slightly louder but not much. The most noticeable difference is that it has a very BIG SOUND, this can be increased by having different EQs and or running it through a stereo reverb or delay .
It depends on what you are trying to achieve. If your running in stereo using a processor of some sort, "Left out" into amp "ONE", "Right out" into amp "TWO" of course, but it's how you balance your amps and processor. You should have Right and Left adjustments within your processor such as your Chorus and Delay etc. Your amps play a big part in your configuration. Are they identical? Is one a Fender and the other a Crate? Finding a balance between those 2 is the real challenge.
How loud does the PRRI have to be before it sounds good? Can I play it in a bedroom without disturbing others one or two rooms away and still have that amazing clean sound?
Probably not, man. Even 12-15 watts is loud as hell for a tube amp. With no master volume, you're not going to be able to crank it up past like 2 or 3 (still clean) without everyone around you hearing it, and it doesn't really start sounding good, clean or dirty, until like 3-4. I think it'd be pointless to buy it as a bedroom amp when you can't crank it.
You're right, as far as I'm concerned. I use a Fender Super Champ in my music room (converted from a SMALL bedroom). The super is way less money and delivers good tones at low volumes for recording. I do use an overdrive pedal, as I don't care for some of the amp's modeling channels. I use it at a small bar too, and have found that at about 5-6 it will hold
all you debating grabbing this amp......stop and go get it.....it is an AWSOME amp for home and small gigs. quite loud too! i have a custom shop strat and a gibson es 339 (57 classics) and they both sound great...... love the humbuckers through it! breaks up around 5 or so depending on the pups and the tremelo is sutle but nice. reverb is classic fender but is quite strong so i never go above 3. all in all im happy! very mellow

@ProGuitarShopDemos So basically the sound we hear is what the amp would sound like in real life? So sorry for the amateurishness.
MrJackanthony 1 year ago
@MrJackanthony - Yes indeed sir, that's the idea anyway. Our ultimate sonic goal is always "amp in the room with you" realism. I think we get as close as anyone.
ProGuitarShopDemos 1 year ago 45
@ProGuitarShopDemos Im Glad. Really love this amp and of course all of your demos.
MrJackanthony 1 year ago
@ProGuitarShopDemos This reverb, along with the Hot Rod DeVille's real Fender spring reverb, doesn't obnoxiously clank or pop like all spring reverb stomp boxes seem to do. I loved the reverb in my old DeVille that I sold, I wanna get a pedal to re-create it for my Marshall, but all the pedals clank and pop, not like the real amp reverb.
theShowStopper321 1 year ago
@ProGuitarShopDemos you can actually hear what it sounds like if you have realtek hd audio driver for pc and turn on voice cancellation effect. and you can use it to hear background music too!
ThePencil901 1 year ago
@foxloner he is recording the sound from the amp, then overlaying that on the video so you hear what the amp sounds like through a quality microphone instead of a super compressed video camera microphone. too many people on youtube try to do reviews without realizing that the sound they get through the camera mic will never be what it actually sounds like.

i'm probably gonna get killed 4 asking this question but what a hell i'll ask it anyway- princeton 65 reverb or blues junior?? for small gigs of course!
tomiclav 2 years ago
princeton reverb coz the blues junior is slightly larger and gives more of a distorted sound
DragonRory17 2 years ago
Kinda depends-do you want amp distortion or pure clean sound? For amp distortion, get the BJ, for cleans, get the PRRI
Ilovemyfender2 2 years ago
i'd say a shoot out is in order!!!
calamaya48 2 years ago
Actually a good question. I bought a Blues Junior NOS and loved it. However, it doesn't have captive tube sockets and gigging alot the 12ax7s come loose and fall out. Reverb is thin. I bought a Princeton reissue and love it. Both are good but if you have the cash, go with the Princeton. Its a better built amp and really delivers the sound.
HalAveryMusic 2 years ago
There's no answer : they don't sound the same at all. Depends on the kind of sound you like.

Wow. These reviews sound MUCH better compared to that guy from
Worldmusicsupply or whatever its called.lols.
MikeNvS 2 years ago 36
Yeah, this guy does a better job but they both only show Fender amps with Fender guitars. What would the amp be like with say a Les Paul?
Guitarooster52 2 years ago
@Guitarooster52 Great buddy!
FenderMeddle94 2 years ago
@MikeNvS yeah, IMHO one of the best reviews on net... not only because of the gear, but the actual idea what to play and know-how to play it good. Very cool!
DKoor 1 year ago
how would you say this compares to the hot rod?
the hot rod seems to have more options but is cheaper, whats up?
ohwell121 2 years ago
they're entirely different amps and don't really compare at all, beyond the fact that both have fender clean tones. otherwise it's pretty much apples and oranges, i think.
usedtobias 2 years ago
quality
rsl84416 2 years ago
well this is a reissue of a classic amp, the hot rod is a new(jsh) model- it's louder, and has higher gain
29396 2 years ago 2
The Hot Rod is the best selling amp in the world, and can be made for much less in Mexico using cheap (crappy) parts and PCB boards. A Princeton like this one cost more to make. Please buy a Hot Rod as the 15 watts in a Princeton is not enough for you. You need a Hot Rod.
bartboop 2 years ago
lol id like to see the statistics you use cause im pretty sure fender twins, vox ac30, plexi's are still the worlds top selling amps hot rods have no signature tone to themselves like other classic amps its just a cheap (like you said) fender tube with higher gain, they are good amps for the moeny i suppose but thise is def better and tone isnt measured in watts buddy
ChillBroify 2 years ago
@ChillBroify hot rods sell way more than twin reverbs or vox ac 30s lol

@bartboop dude i got a hot rod but still WTF?

i have a deluxe reverb and i play it alot at 6-7, the thing is tone sounds bad straight in front of it. so ill either stand in my hallway or in my bathroom and its not loud
sleepysam52 2 years ago
really? am thinking of buying this
and can only play in my room
would it be worth it? sounds pretty bad
ohwell121 2 years ago
@ohwell121 i would use a booster if i want to have overdrive

I just wonder do you guys wear earplugs when sitting close to the amp with volume greater than 7 ?
JimiPlaysWoodstock 2 years ago 23
is pro guitar shop an actual store i can go visit and buy stuff or is it just internet order only.

GeekG 2 years ago
Here's what you do: get an overdrive pedal. :)
Ilovemyfender2 2 years ago
get a Lovepedal Les Lius. Great OD pedal that gives dead on Fender overdriven tones, and only $149.
rokr432 2 years ago
i was thinking of getting one of these very soon, duz anybody have anything negative to say about them i should know about (please exclude volume and watts thnx)
guitarded222 2 years ago
Sounds great. But theres one thing i don't really get... Is there any big differences between DRRI and PRRI if you look at the sound, or is it most the volyme? And does this little amp got a good blues tone, thats what i play most :D
FenderMeddle94 2 years ago

Strat + Princeton reverb is my all time favorite combo
diabinhoUSA 2 years ago 2
Great review. This is one sweet amp. I have DRRI also for gigs where more volume is needed. But I find Gibson 57 Humbuckers break them both up really quick. So I put a Celestion Alnico Blue in the DRRI. (Incredible difference) In the Princeton amp to keep costs down I went for a Eminence Ragin' Cajun 10 inch. (You can run the volume way up and keep it clean. It is just wonderful with Fender guitars clean.) They are great stock but man with upgraded speakers they are awsome.
resoblues 2 years ago
Is wattage the main difference between the Princeton reverb and the deluxe reverb?
Spoon26 2 years ago
I'd say the biggest difference is the speaker - DR has 12" and PR has 10". But another difference would be that the DR has two channels. The sound is still pretty similar, I happen to think the Princeton is darker and warmer sounding, where the Deluxe can get a lot brighter.
mattpowers2 2 years ago
and speaker size, which makes all the difference in the low-end.
pinholedstars 2 years ago
This amp looks like the total package, cant wait to get my hands on one of these!
cracksmokinbaby 2 years ago
I have a stock 1966 Princeton Reverb, and it sounds much different than this amp.
Much more gain and better reverb and tremolo.
Not to mention that I actually gig with it!
These amps really scream with a good ES-335.
TheRealKurtJames 2 years ago 2
that first riff at the beginning is a song?
if yes what song is it?
guysapire 2 years ago
I've got one of these amps, and every time I play through it, I appreciate it more every time. It sounds so good, I just play direct into it (either Telecaster or Ibanez Talman TC630). And playing 25 feet away from the amp sounds so nice ... sitting further back from the amp makes my whole lounge room become one big speaker box, so you just get good smooth tone and no harshness. Of course, this would apply to any amp, but a Princeton in a small room is just not doing it justice.
wapzilla 2 years ago
Okay, I'm confused. Would two of these in stereo be any louder than one? Logic would dictate that the difference would be small if noticeable at all, but from what I've heard, it's much louder...
HALP!
Chumleh 2 years ago
I set up two fender princetons in stereo and my perception is that they are slightly louder but not much. The most noticeable difference is that it has a very BIG SOUND, this can be increased by having different EQs and or running it through a stereo reverb or delay .
tikibarproject 2 years ago
It depends on what you are trying to achieve. If your running in stereo using a processor of some sort, "Left out" into amp "ONE", "Right out" into amp "TWO" of course, but it's how you balance your amps and processor. You should have Right and Left adjustments within your processor such as your Chorus and Delay etc. Your amps play a big part in your configuration. Are they identical? Is one a Fender and the other a Crate? Finding a balance between those 2 is the real challenge.

Doud92 2 years ago
How loud does the PRRI have to be before it sounds good? Can I play it in a bedroom without disturbing others one or two rooms away and still have that amazing clean sound?
johnnylighton 2 years ago
Probably not, man. Even 12-15 watts is loud as hell for a tube amp. With no master volume, you're not going to be able to crank it up past like 2 or 3 (still clean) without everyone around you hearing it, and it doesn't really start sounding good, clean or dirty, until like 3-4. I think it'd be pointless to buy it as a bedroom amp when you can't crank it.
headphonicsok 2 years ago 2
You're right, as far as I'm concerned. I use a Fender Super Champ in my music room (converted from a SMALL bedroom). The super is way less money and delivers good tones at low volumes for recording. I do use an overdrive pedal, as I don't care for some of the amp's modeling channels. I use it at a small bar too, and have found that at about 5-6 it will hold
