I've seen both. One of the nicest communities I've been through in northern Saskatchewan is a reserve. Huge, immaculately kept lots, nice homes, very aesthetically pleasing community in the middle of a forest.

Olympic Village is $100 million over budget. Intrawest sued the Canadian government for $90 million before the Olympics started. BC laid off 800 to 900 teachers and cut further education funding by $40 million dollars.
This has already cost us taxpayers $8 billion dollars.
Think about the long time BC workers that were laid off to make room for these workers from abroad. Think about all the displacement that happened because of new buildings. Homeless folk didn't fall outta the sky either..

The argument can be made that this posse was made up of terrorists, albeit not of the homicidal variety.
Terror is a loose term, so it is kind of pointless to debate what is and isn't terrorism.

Nothing the protestors said had not been voiced loudly before.

Once in awhile, a child chooses not to be stupid like his parents and becomes a success. This is done by educating themselves.
Certainly, our government gives enough away that any indian who chooses to be a success should be able to become a success.
I have seen enough success stories to not be too cynical about it.

who the hell would want to live on a reserve, have you seen the shit that goes down around there, its obvious when you drive through vancouver with the seperation from home owners to indian land owners, their grass is 4' tall on their lawn with kids toys and clothing scattered through out. ive seen mattresses thrown out of the home for the dog only to be chewn up by it and have the scattered pieces lay out for years, and probably generations.

I've seen both. One of the nicest communities I've been through in northern Saskatchewan is a reserve. Huge, immaculately kept lots, nice homes, very aesthetically pleasing community in the middle of a forest.
However, this is the minority
The majority fit the scene that you describe, and it is pathetic.
Until leaders begin to make the most of their communities, the scene that you describe will remain all too common.

The whole idea of seperate 'first nations' has not worked.
I used to argue with a good native friend of mine that self-government is bound to fail; among 200 nations on Earth, at least 80% of them are governed by thieving tyrants.
I asked him how a few hundred Indian nations were going to do any better.
Years later, he admitted that I was right.
Some of the chiefs are as bad as the tyrants of Africa.

Olympic Village is $100 million over budget. Intrawest sued the Canadian government for $90 million before the Olympics started. BC laid off 800 to 900 teachers and cut further education funding by $40 million dollars.
This has already cost us taxpayers $8 billion dollars.
Think about the long time BC workers that were laid off to make room for these workers from abroad. Think about all the displacement that happened because of new buildings. Homeless folk didn't fall outta the sky either..

The economic fundamentals depend on what you make of the facilities. Why keep them vacant?
With world class facilities, you can book world class events, bringing thousands of people into the city.
There are some problems, ie: the waste which is the ski jump facility.
But hosting more world cup events and more world championships and national teams is not a bad thing.
However, you do have to PUT THEM TO USE for it to pay off.
You are correct though.
Non-liquidating investments are a gamble.

The First Nations people did not give their land over to the Crown of Canada, it was taken without consent. Therefore, we are still living on land that that is not ours. Having the Olympics on this land without the permission of the people who rightfully own it, is disrespectful.
