I remember reading in some music paper, back in the 90's, that the first Red House Painters album was made of the remixed demos that the group originally sent to Ivo, who was then head of 4ad.
That's actually true. Ivo did that with a lot of his artists. Another album I remember he did that with was Lisa Germano's "Happiness." Ivo was a total control freak, but he obv. knew what he was doing...
Yeah you're right, Ivo was a control freak, in fact when Red House Painters started doing something that he didn't feel right (for the album Songs for a blue guitar) he told them he wouldn't release that, so they left. That may sound unfair to the groups, but it is also what made 4ad special: that it had a very definite idea of style, a very small musical path to follow, and a very uncompromising view of what was cool. This doesn't exist anymore in any musical label...
Also, I was intrigued to find out what that little image of a comic meant. The text in it is Swedish, and the guy is saying "But what if the afterlife is as meaningless..."
like you are driving through the old neighborhood on an overcast day. this song always gets to me.

It the same recording as the one that appeared on the album. They just mixed it.

Wow, really? That really shows how mixing can change a song.
Where did you read this?
I do believe the vocals are different though

Great song. Lyrics are about Mark's fear of getting older. He thought he would have figured life out a long time ago, but didn't.
His songs are very personal.

Yeah, its a very moving song.
