@drpimpelmees i begged my uncle to borrow his 12 string guitar (his most prized possession) just so i could learn this song. when i see him next, im gonna play it for him
Wonderful song .This tune is from the album Rust Never Sleeps,in my opinion a great record by Neil Young. But this version is from the album Live Rust.
To me this song represents those moments in adulthood when we establish our way and leave the dead weight behind.Neil didnt let anyone piss on him. Not even David friggin Geffen. A rose clipped by the bull whip. Not for Mr. Bernard Shakey
I'm 57. When I was younger I thought Neil was it. I loved Neil. My all time favorites were the Beatles, Stones, Dylan and Neil. I used to listen to Neil 3 hrs a day at different intervals of my life but I got older. I"ve kind of "turned" on Neil as I have most of the "things" or "stuff" I thought was "cool" when I was younger. I thought this song was kinda "deep' at one point. "Burned my credit card for fuel" and all that. I find it to be kind of sappy now. Hiding behind hay bales. Gimme a break
@monsterrod420 Geez whiz. It is all very deep isn't it monsterrod? The earth is 4.5 billion years old. {The universe much older. You and I and Neil are all very important. "Groove out dude. Wow!!"
its bittersweet that he doesnt play it anymore. this is his masterpiece. this is the best neil young song, rock, country, grunge. this is bove all. this is the shit!!
@TheRonsteff I agree, quite the song that's not played by Radio Stations like it should be. Neil Young is a legend, caught him (LIVE in concert at Mile One Stadium, St.John's ,Nfld. April/09. Wow- one of Canada's best.
This is a good song. I've never heard it. Neil is like one of my favorite artists. Cortez the Killer, Tonight's the Night, Heart of Gold, Silver & Gold, Harvest, and so much more. Those r my favorites.
I remember when I was trying to introduce a friend to Neil Young, I didn't send this song to a few songs in (as a neil young obsessive I'm sure what's enough for isn't enough for most haha), but when I did actually send it to him he was like "...why didn't you just send this first?"...
The only time I've heard Neil Young stumble on lyrics in concert, but given the extraordinary complexity of this songs lyrics, understandable. Still, the man recovers as usual, and rocks on.
Check out the Berlin DVD.. an omg awsome concert. Probably the best Like a Hurricane rendition of all... jaw dropping performance, with a haunting After Berlin to round off the set. Go'on Neil.
i bought Rust Never Sleeps last week, it's my first Neil Young album and I can't stop listening to it, it's beautiful! which album should i buy next? any suggestions are welcome :)
Either After the Goldrush or Harvest. ATG came before Harvest which came before Rust Never Sleeps. ATG was the album which brought Neil to general notice in the UK . Then get Zuma with the track often voted THE top play of all time from any artist - Cortez the Killer. Also try a great live concert DVD from 1978 - Rust Never Sleeps, recorded at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in pouring rain.
And after the ones suggested by Biakeyholedave you won't be able to stop, so try with the following : Everybody knows this is nowhere, On the beach, Tonight's the night, Time fades away (only on vinyl, I got it by internet, but SO GREAT), Comes a Time, Weld, Ragged Glory, Decade, Unplugged..., all masterpieces...and then the Archives Vol. 1...Enjoy!
As an avid NY-collector in the 90s I would recommend a bootleg cd called Fallen Angel In Frisco , it may be difficult to find but it`s the best recording of his 90s material to date
That`s right, the Berlin-show is a classic. I watched my old vhs the other day and I had forgotten how good it was. I don`t think the song "Berlin" can be found anywhere else. At least you couldn`t when I bought it in the 90s.
fyi flescum, since the Berlin show is on DVD now, it might be worth buying again for the sound quality. It might well be better than on the vhs. And wow, you've been enjoying that since the nineties? I'm jealous.^)
I`ll certainly buy it on dvd when I find it. Hope I can find the Ragged Glory-videos and the Freedom-ep on dvd as well, alot of cool NY-stuff was released on vhs in the 90s
Actually, as great as all these albums are, especially Harvest Moon and AtGR, along with any number of others, Mirrorball comes to mind.
But I'd recommend Silver and Gold. A Beautiful album for tone and tunes. Next for experience would be Prairie Wind for his more recent music. It really stands out for message and music. I play guitar and love playing No Wonder off this album. Do hope you enjoy.
As an X-er who'd been into NY since childhood, I thought MB was sadly missed by most. WTF. It hit me and others like a pure rock wall of sound. Many see his work as a having many hits and misses. That one hit with guitar epics.
when bob dylan playd my city (winnipeg), he went to neils old home he grew up in and asked if he could see neils old room, and the owner now said she watched bob dylan do nothing but stare out the window for about a half hour. pretty sweet.
Actually this has always been one of my favorites of his! A songwriting tour-de-force. Lyrically just pure poetry. His use of metaphors to describe how he felt at the time about CSN selling out is brilliant!
Thanks for the insight Gil. I get the brilliance of the lyrics but I guess I am not into the melody - not a bad song to me, just doesn't grab me like so many of Neil's songs. One more song with Bird references .. most of his bird reference songs are some of my favorite (such as expecting to fly and Birds). Pretty brutal lyrics aimed as CSN and I agree with Neil's evaluation. Your admirer and friend.
I agree it's funny to talk about favourites when it comes to Neil, but after Thrasher, I'd put things like Wrecking Ball, We never danced, and that brilliant acoustic version of Shots!
Try playing this on a 12 string,
you guitar enthousiasts like folk will be amazed;D

great video, I really like the photo's very well done.
Neils lyrics are so poetic and so meaningful the rust never sleeps era really produced some amazing music from this talented man.
I listened to Randy Bachmann give anecdotes about Neil and its amazing, just how many positive cool stories surround his life
a great asset to humanity
