They are my favorites. They were showmen and knew how to "sing a song" that would grab people, make them remember the message. I still can't hear "Get away Jordan" and not feel empowered. This is GOSPEL Thanks for posting.
Utterly, utterly, utterly brilliant!! These guys were the real deal, and how cool was Big Chief? He looked the business and sounded great too. Easy to see why Elvis idolised him and copied his moves! Just watch how Big Chief shakes his leg, Elvis got it from him and admitted as much. The Statesmen were EP favourites from the early 50s all-night gospel meets at the Ellis Auditorium. Brilliant.
These men were real and not show biz types like Signature Sound (albeit with good voices). You don't need the flash, hip clothes and fake moves. Just sing like men and demonstrate the gifts that God gave you and praise His Name in song.
Amen to that!! i totally agree with you! Ernie and SSQ try waaaaay too hard to "put on a good show" and entertain the audience and alot of times it seems that that's why they're in it, like the main focus is not praising and glorifying God anymore... :(
this is what the statesmen and southern gospel is all about, and sadly the industry wont be this good again, with all the old school groups fading out
AWESOME!!! Great voices....Hovie is fantastic!!!!!5*****

Your right all the old groups are either retiring or disbanding cause they just can't make money anymore with all these new groups out.

They have died and gone away....starting in the late 40's through the 70's was the heyday!
