  • The man had such a natural wit, he is still sadly missed.

  • I fell in love with this song the instant i heard it.

  • Sister Josephine sounds like a right dish ;) haha love this guy.

  • Im related to him but i never met him:D

  • An excellent visual accompaniment to the boss's voice; thankyou!

  • @m1keridge the boss lol. I know what you mean though

  • jakes a great singer

  • omg its a TARDIS!!!

  • He spent several years in France and said that he'd been influenced by the chansonnier tradition in his songwriting.

  • I understand he particularly liked George Brassens and translated and sang his song 'Le Gorille'

  • Man is a legend.

    Where's the statue of him?

    We should start a campaign!

  • @renault25 hahahahahahahha fuck off

  • Does anybody else see the link between this fabulous song and the film "Nuns on the Run" with Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane? I'm sure they lifted the gags from Jake.

  • I love this song, in my head all the time! Jake Thackery is a legend. So pleased there are songs of his on YouTube,

  • some one told me he used to teach at a school in armley

  • Love our Jake! Handsome bugger too...

  • I suppose in a way we're all Sister Josephine. I was going to be a nun once but then i realised i was a male and i was five years old.

This song makes me think of private schools for some reason. Probably cos near by me there was a private school run by nuns and monk(ey)s

  • @coolawesometothemax Was one of the monks Brother Gorilla?

  • This song stays in my head for days after hearing it, just love to hear this song. Funny.

  • Wonderful old song

  • ha ha ha ha

  • Utter genius! A thinking man's Bob Dylan!

  • well that implies that bob dylan was in some way unintelligent and that jake thackray's songs in any way resemble his, and i'm not sure i buy either proposition

  • I'm glad you're not buying my propositions - they're not for sale, anyway. Sorry...

  • Is that because they were on the market and you got no offers?

  • A lyrical genious, and a truely unique artist.

  • when i was 6 or 7, we had a tape of this and it was my favourite ever...i found it again the other day and played it...i cant believe my mum let me listen to this when i was little... then again, i only get most of the innuendo now...hehehehe...its really quite rude...in a way...too late now...

  • Brilliant

  • sorely missed

  • Wonderful.

  • Genius! I'm still laughing!

  • quite marvellous

  • greg recommended this... we have since fallen out

  • Just thinking... as I grew up watching Jake, as you get older, you seem to realise now what quality that you watched way back then. Just wonder how Jake would fare on Shite Factor nowadays ? Programmes like that... ever declining standards me thinks ?

  • Decorman55 : Utterlly agree. I'm always amused at these sob story X factor scenes where the interviewed contestants say they've always wanted to be Famous Popstars. Then why haven't they learn to play atleast one bloody instrument? They can't read music yet their given million pound recording contracts. Ridiculous.

  • Dear elly when they say-"They want to be famous Popstars" I personally feel that translates as " I want Money and Fame the easy way and as quickly as possible" sod learning an instrument and playing LIVE and being creative and entertaining people.!!

  • A true master of the intelligent lyric. A great loss to music and the world at large.

  • Jake was a devout Catholic and in my opinion did a lot to relax attitudes towards the Church with such songs as this, after all,if you can't laugh at yourself you have no right to giggle at anyone else, sad, sad day when he died. Thanks for posting.

  • Great comments !

  • A very clever man, with a wonderful use of language!

  • A unique and irreplacable man. I used to make a point of reading his column in the Yorkshire Post. I think I spent Christmas Day 2002 asking my wife "Are you sure Jake Thackray's dead?" It didn't seem right somehow.

  • The first time i saw jake was at the crucible theatre in sheffield in 1971. With my mum dad and sister. By the way i was 9 and my sister 7 years old.Memory fails me as to which song my sister requested, but we left a note at the stage door, and jake announced he was singing it for Sarah, (my sister). I saw him many more times at the rockingham arms at wentworth and spoke to him several times. What a wonderful wordsmith, and very underated guitarist. Im 46 tomorrow and jake remains a hero!

  • Classic. Excellent.

  • Still the funniest song ever!

  • Jake was a master of his craft and a true artist.

The world was better when he was upon it.

  • I'm weeping! Thanks for putting this on.

  • Saw Jake for the first time at the tramshed in Woolwich in '77, I've not stopped laughing at his brilliantly funny lyrics since. Very clued-up musician, too. Hilarious stuff, great montage, thanks for posting.

  • Superb Jake at his best

  • Top class, Jake was the man !! God Bless

  • Absolutely, brilliant, brought back vivid memories of when I was a kid, watching Jake on the Bernie Braden show on tv !

  • Thanks to Decorman55,it was Bradens program I first saw Jake on.Didn't it used to be on Saturday night with Ester Ranthingy and the guy with the smoking jacket who did the monologues, what was his name?

  • His name was Cyril Fletcher. Not sure what his main claim to fame was - but I know he was a terrific pantomime dame!

  • His main claim to fame was odd odes.... quirky cuttings from the paper

  • Yes, manc...morrisfool is correct.. Cyril Fletcher, & yes your right that he used to recite monologues on the programme. Can`t remember though if he wrote them or not ?

  • Thanks again to you and morrisfool,I'm sure he did write them himself and were current to the news of the week ending with a ditti from something like the Smithington Mercury about a woman who had trained her cats to sing or something as bizzare.Great fun,was it called Bradens Week? maybe it's on You Tube, off for a look. Thanks for the reply.

  • @mancsmoveseast I remember Jake Thackray appearing on That's Life.

  • What a great montage you've created for this classic funny song!

  • oh wow that brought back memories!

  • Lyrics superb and what a guitarist.R.I.P Jake

  • Classic. Thanks for some lovely Thackray. Great visual accompaniment, too..
