  • [sigh] Legendary time in racing. The cars in those days were true widowmakers.

Sam Hanks won in 1957, and still in tears, announced his retirement.

  • now1000....great post...ever think about adding the "500 miles to Glory" sound to this?...wouldn't track shot per shot, but might add a little to it. I own the album and we could figure out the rest...let me know

  • @jenie0 I have a copy of that LP. Great record!

  • GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU!

  • Great post and such a treasure to own! Congratulations and thanks for sharing with us! Yes, we are spoiled now with having sound with video recording. We have come a long way with that technology. I did just post the 1963 Indy 500 on my page and got a bit creative, adding audio from what we taped at the 1988 Indy 500. I, too, did not care for dead silence and had to add something to get the goose bumps going! Still, an awesome video here. 1957 was the first year my dad was there.

  • Thanks for posting this! I love seeing old home movies of the Five Hundred. Newsreel footage is great, but home movies let you see what it looked like for one fan in the stands that day.

  • those guys had balls...almost no safety equipment compared to today, bad tires. and they'd be doing 160 mph down the straight into the turns.

  • My thanks, as well. Home movies of the "500" reveal the race from a fan point of view. They're always fresh and interesting.

  • "Now stay tuned for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

  • Great video. It would be really great if it had sound, but I'll take what I can get.
