I played in Bob's quintet for a short time in NY some years ago (80's), with Jimmy Madison, Chuck Loeb and Jim McNeeley. HE is one of the more amazing musicians I have ever had the pleasure of performing with. That band was nice, and I feel so fortunate to have had the experience. Now I see the Jackets and wish I could be Jimmy Haslip for a couple of nights... hahaha... Gordy Johnson
robbrie...yes i do realize your admiration for Wayne Shorter, as i admire him myself, but for my personal tastes...i would take Mintzer over Shorter any day of the week, much like i would take Freddie Hubbard over Miles Davis any day of the week, regardless of who preceded who...sorry dude :(
@tmg1968 sorry dude...Wayne Shorter would like to have a word with you. Wayne was Miles' Tenor as soon as Coltrane left. And after Miles, he co-founded a pretty ok fusion band called Weather Report :)
@tmg1968 sorry dude...Wayne Shorter would like to have a word with you. Wayne was Miles' Tenor as soon as Coltrane left. And after Miles, he co-founded a pretty ok fusion band called Weather Report :)
@tmg1968 I don't know, man. There are so many great players out that any one of 'em could be justified as the "next" Mike Brecker. Really, though, I don't think it should be said like that. They're just great players.
Mintzer blows me away. If you listen to his lines, they're borderline perfect. It's looks and sounds like he's just eatin' breakfast. His time is friggin' perfect and his phrasing is slightly unorthodox. Not on this cut as much, but on other Yellowjackets albums... definitely original. It completely sets himself apart. I love his altissimo register! It's sick! Sounds like he's holding on by the skin of his teeth. I love that sound!! Wish my altissimo sounded like that...
Absolutely great! Terrific musicianship - and Bob is a great guy and teacher. Had the pleasure of working with him and recording a CD with JAZZESSENCE (State Youth Jazz Orchestra of Hamburg, Germany)
It's insane to hear how big his sound is live. It just has this presence. He stayed at my college for a week and I got to play two concerts with him. Absolutely killin' it.
@GLeone221 I'm studying saxophone with Don Aliquo at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. We have a Jazz Artist Series here where we have 3 artists each year to play a concert with the top big band, play a concert with the faculty combo, and give a masterclass. Past artists have also included Phil Woods, Terrell Stafford, Greg Osby, Tom Harrell, Lee Konitz, Donald, Brown, Randy Brecker, Eric Alexander, Jim Snidero, Dick Oatts, Dave Liebman, , Eddie Daniels, Benny Golson, etc.
@GLeone221 Bob being such a versatile musician and composer, he ALSO performed his tenor saxophone concerto with our Wind Ensemble. It was an incredible week with him! I'm looking to study with him at USC for grad school. :)
@mxer6161 just cause he can belt out amazing solos doesnt mean he has to. sometimes is great to just play laid back and simple. i mean, it still sounds great!
@mxer6161 Well, if you've listened to much Bob Mintzer, he's not a four-on-the-floor style player like Michael Brecker was. Listen to early Miles Davis; he could play as high, loud and fast as Dizzy, but as he matured he played more laid back.
A mature jazz player decides what not to play, not just crap everything in.
@mxer6161 So in comparing Mintzer yourself, and thinking he's coasting, you saying you go hardcore, balls to the walls every time? That's pretty lame I must say. This "coasting"(as you call it) he plays is very hip and laid back. Its cool.

His sound is too polished, though I do prefer his playing WAY better than his writing...

@fuzzybear718 Yes, he is telling a story using the language of Jazz. That's the goal of all musicians.
