This was the radio hit version in the US as it's the "clean" version of the song. Them's recording of it was banned in the US due to the content of one line of the original lyrics.
tohse of you who didn't know where Shadows of Knight got their name, they combined the name of the british group the shadows, and added Knight because they all came out of Mt Prospect high School, whose team name was the Knights, a little bit of trivia, and by the way, this song was written by Van Morrison, who did it with his group Them.
This version is actually pretty damn good, much to my surprise. Before I came across this ,the only other versions I liked was the original by Them and Jimi Hendrix's cover. But this one can easily be added to the list.
I am not sure if they are the originators of this song as they go back as far as 1965 and they are the ones who get the most airplay on radios ! Although I listened to other versions and enjoy the version by a group called
They sound wasted-if this is anything like the Cellar clubs in Texas, no one would have noticed or cared. They would have wanted the ****** management to turn the lights back down.

Warren has a permanent collection of amps he made at my house in Southern CA. We play music often, he is a seasoned vet for my young alternative sound...still creating...he is a true lover of music. His rambling on about low-impedance pickups is way over my head, but I value his experience and input and I know what he is talking about. It's so great to hear him playing here.
Pretty sexed-up lyrics compared to the studio recording, which completely left out the "then she come to my room" bit from the Van Morrison version. I think Warren Rogers played lead guitar on the SOK studio recording (there is a "Where the Action Is" video, apparently no longer on Youtube, that shows Joe Kelley playing bass on "Gloria"), but I'd bet Joe is playing lead on this live recording.
The Cellar was one of our main hangouts in that time. Does anyone remember a band with a curly headed guy with a big mustache (I think his nickname was Curly). I think he got drafted around 1966...
The SOK got their name from the High School - Prospect High that had as their symbol as Knight in Shining armor. They used to hold dances that were billed as an 'All Knight Dance' and so the group came up with the name. Or so I remember.
Thanks for posting. This is from raw and alive at the cellar. SOK was the house band at the cellar. Cellar was a teen club in Arlington Hts.,Ill. No booze so kids could go see the bands live. My source says this recording was made in December 1966 at the the cellar. Its a great piece of garage band history! Thanks
DAMN this is awesome!!!!!

What I think is that Van Morrison and THEM did the original, but it was Shadows Of Knight who had the hit with the song, but not certain.

Van Morrison who played with a group called " Them" originated it !!

Ted Nugent played with the Amboy Dukes and was a student at St. Viator. They put every band to shame....way ahead of their time

@verdict4me I prefer the 1966 version. This is for the 1967 burnouts known as the "Facial Hair" crowd.
