  • You da man Mike!!!

  • Really I´m travel into Another Dimension!!

  • What a little drumkit.

  • His drumming is another dimension.

  • 1:09 THIS IS SPARTAAA!!

  • wohoooooooo!!!!!!

  • Fuckin' Awesome Dude! Cool gig bra'.

  • omg... His arms!! THEYRE SO CLEAN!!

  • Pas vraiment un grand batteur mais il a l'air sincère :-)

  • @magmayt Pas vraiment un grand batteur ? Il vous en faut beaucoup ;)

  • 'Best' is inevitably a context-dependent concept. I don't think this drummer is as technically adept as Vinnie Colaiuta, Tony Williams, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, Dave Garibaldi, Brian Blade, Bill Stewart, Mike Clark, Billy Cobham, David Jones, Richie Morales, and probably hundreds of others. However, maybe they wouldn't make the music sound the way this drummer does 'overall'. And in that case, they wouldn't be the 'best' in this context.

  • Such an awesome song and Portnoy has some brilliant drum ideas in part of the song!

  • Portnoy is so talented with odd signatures..

  • this album changed the way i look at drumming

  • Portnoy \m/

  • check out my another dimension drum cover!!!

  • Comment removed

  • why such a small set Mike?

  • @brimbles72 because you don't need a big set to be good

  • I love this album, this guys have a really huge imagination.... now let's see what Mike Mangini can do.

  • i always hated the bands he played for... but i have to take off my hat to yo mr portnoy... youre a great drummer

  • its not the fact about good or not...evry one has a diffrent style of playing

  • i wish i could be some what as good as him. :(

i mean with all the odd time signature!

  • he's like really hot in this

  • Mike portnoy, niko Mcbrain, Mark Zonder, Neil peart

my favs all for different reasons

  • Then I disagree with Mike,

  • He's fucking awesome. Nice time signatures.

  • That's the problem with the YT community these days, all these kids wanna do is argue and flame each other over the net instead of enjoying what ppl have to offer.

  • i know i'm gonna go against all the MP fanboys, but...

I know he's solid as shit and can lay into the beat and play what he does with power and precision and whatnot, but i feel like he never challenges himself. Same old fills and patterns and never changes anything. Hopefully someone else knows what i mean, without responding with "WTF MAN MIKE PORTNOY IS DA BEST NO MATTER WHAT."

  • @Buhzie15 i'm not going to agree or disagree with you, i just feel like saying, i had to try and learn a part of danceopfeternity on drums today, and that shit is disgusting to play

  • @Buhzie15 "WTF MAN MIKE PORTNOY IS DA BEST NO MATTER WHAT."

  • what is the name of the dish that is under the left side of the ride?

  • @playnow00 @playnow00 Uhh I think you're talking about his max stax? If you are, they are his low set of stax, just google "max stax low" if you are interested.

  • @SummitDrums Thankks man !

  • Love his jam style at @2:24

  • Why don't you be your own favorite DRUMMER or MUSICIAN or artist??? Less imitiation and more creativity. Vive La France!!!! Onward never backward... Start a revolution. 'Nuff said-dk

  • @dkofva Inspiration is never a bad thing.

  • Love the grove at 3.00 nicely judged....

  • MATT GRIENER ! <333333

  • @DeeJaySammy Greiner sucks ass.

  • OHH DIOSSS MIOO!!! EL PRIMER BEAT ES INCREIBLEEE - FIRST BEAT IS THE BEST OF THE WORLD - I JUST WATCHED IT 34 TIMES IN A ROW TODAY -

    Saludos desde Lérida/España/Cataluña

Greetings from Lleida / Spain / Catalonia

  • This song is amazing and my jaw dropped with it's beauty.Portnoy is beast.

  • except for his snare and basedrum all drums sound like shit lol love the cymbals though

  • omg that china sounds like heaven

  • oh snap!! acordion solo!! NICE! :D

  • not a drummer myself, but is it just me or is mike using really long drumsticks in the beginning?

  • what i love about Portnoy is he plays drums like its a lead instrument,so even though it compliments what the other instruments are doing its very much a driving force in itself

  • this is my favorite era of Portnoy

  • He always has a crazy face when playing it's pretty funny

  • At the very beginning of the video it shows the title of the song.

  • this guy is a beast

  • wait a minute...i didn't know portnoy played with odd time signatures.

  • 2:23 en adelante the best parts

  • Happy birthday, Mike! Stay cool! We love you!

  • isnt this his kit he uses for liquid tension?

  • @destructivedaz Yes, and this is a song he uses for Liquid Tension.

  • Mike Portnoy is a god on drums....mans a genius

  • lol he looks like Lenidus and is about to spartan kick a guy into the endless pit when he plays

  • This is some good shit right here!

  • He's a great drummer, fo shizzle. This is a personal peeve of mine though (I'm not a drummer, I'm a bassist), but I hate when drummers use the flat of the ride cymbal, haha. I love when they only use the "bell" part. It gives it a nice, clear, loud, precise "Ding". Mark Zonder does that a lot. Love it.

  • ya. i like the bell more as well and i am a drummer. but the bow of the cymbal is great if they have a really dry or really heavy defined ping ride. if they have that the whole cymbal sounds lik,e a frwakin bell its awsome!

  • @liquifex well, that's like saying, Liquifex, i only like it when you play your middle C note. Lol!

ridiculous. and even more ridiculous that, as a professed bass player, you ask the drummer to limit his sound and expression options by "Staying on that annoying fucking bell" ONLY, for you. i would think you'd have more perception and a wider "scope" of realization that, a fucking cymbal offers a multitude of Sound Colors. But...hey everyone, Liquifex needs you to just hammer the bell. lame

  • No one could ever be better than him.

  • you're entitled to you're opinion, but mike portnoy actually disagrees with you. he thinks there are many drummers better than him...

  • @SiCmetalfan People got to understand that you can't judge drummers like that. There will never be a best. No doubt that Mike Portnoy is a freakin' great drummer, but there's many other great drummers. Mike Portnoy is probably my favourite though, because i enjoy his odd time signatures and style in general.

There will be favourite drummers, but never a best drummer. :)

  • I agree about never really being a single best drummer. there are too many greats and many great at different styles.

you like odd time signatures. check tomas haake, if you haven't already.

  • Excellent point. I have seen everybody from Mike, Neil Piert, Buddy Rich, John & the list could go on forever. Different era's, styles, etc. All GREAT Drummers but each with different styles & different times. Each builds upon the other. Do love this guy though. He can mix so many styles into one piece.

  • @Terinigan Pretty much. :P

  • @Terinigan If odd time signatures is your thing look up Bobby Jarzombeck :P him and his brother the guitarist are crazy... seriously...

  • @Terinigan Great Coment,,, 10000% agree.

  • @Terinigan You are absolutely correct! To each his own as I am sure Mike and Neal would say. Enjoy what each has to offer. Don't compare!

  • @Terinigan yeah, joey jordison="the" favorite. fail favorite

  • @PimpMasterT My Favorite Bobby Jarzombek

  • @SpartanLaserCanon yep. Bobby shits on Mike's face and doesn't even wipe it off.

  • @Terinigan couldn't have said it better myself. I would like to see anybody try to judge a competition between portnoy, neil pert, jordison... anybody else considered "best". It couldn't be done because there are no set guidelines to what makes a drummer "the best"

  • @AssKickULator Ya So You'd Have To Add Bobby Jarzombek Then People Would Vote Him The Best. xD It's Probably True.

  • @Terinigan i like u, at last someone finally gets it

  • @Terinigan top statement right there.

  • @Terinigan Virgil Donati <3 <3 <3

  • @Terinigan and anyway he is in my top 5 :). and he so down-to-earth!

  • i personally think blake richardson is as good if not a tiny bit better than portnoy. hes just not as expirienced as mike.

  • i think your right.

  • ya. blakes a god

  • @SiCmetalfan Yes there are, but Mike is the best drum composer period.

  • @votenpormi no he's not. you could name almost any jazz drummer with more challenging compositions on his belt. people need to realize that odd time signatures don't make a song incredible, or for that matter, much more complicated. mike portnoy is a good drummer, but a better calculator.

  • @abucket888 Sooooo... I guess you don't agree with my personal opinion.

  • @votenpormi to call a drummer the "best drum composer period" is not an opinion because you're claiming something about a musician in context of music theory, which is objective and cannot be argued upon. he is not the best drum composer period because he does not write the most complicated drumming material in the world. what you can get away with saying is that portnoy is your favorite drum composer or he writes the "coolest" drum compositions IN YOUR OPINION.

  • @votenpormi no he's not. you could name almost any renowned jazz drummer and i guarentee he would have many more challenging compositions on his belt. people need to realize that odd time signatures don't make a song incredible, or for that matter, much more complicated. mike portnoy is a good drummer, but a better calculator.

  • @SiCmetalfan that's true, he really has a small ego, which is why he brings all kinds of drummers onstage with him. He is great, definitely my all time favorite.

  • @SiCmetalfan

He's undoubtedly my all-time favorite drummer and in my opinion the best but to be fair I like to say that there are others as good only different. :)

  • @SiCmetalfan because is the true

  • @SiCmetalfan That is because he is humble

  • @SiCmetalfan Ya He Probably Wants To Be As Good As Bobby Jarzombek

  • @SiCmetalfan I have yet to meet a drummer that thinks they are the best in the world. Every drummer I know or have even seen on youtube willingly states that there are better drummers out there. There is always going to be someone who is better than you at something and that includes drummers like Portnoy, or even Neil Peart.

  • relax

  • Me.

  • @Trumavarium nothing is imposible hhahaha

  • sexy (the song that is...)

  • mike portnoy plays great!! you must watch to boby jarzombek too

  • groove at 1:59 ;)

  • its their style of music.

ur talking way out of ur position.

  • He's crying all the way to the bank.

Instead of bitching about it, write your own music.

  • i wish i was that X-Men girl that can take other peoples powers. i forgot her name but yeah. i think Mike might be willing to share :D

  • Rogue, Anna Pakin...

  • Too bad in order to take their powers, she had to touch them, and by touching them, she killed them...

  • bien educado noo les parece.... jejejeje!!!!!

  • on which album is that song?

  • liquid tension 2

  • liquid tension experiment 2

  • One of the best grooves ever! The time signature is hard to play though.

  • hey mike can u give me your drumset

  • i lold. so true

  • so perfect...let every says what want but Mike Portnoy is MY HERO!!!

  • ill second that he is mine to :)

  • Comment removed

  • yeah I love 2:25 it has always been my favorite

  • this part about as if from yago serial:D:D and gardel yago´s friend! :D:D:D

  • this is just absolutely incredible... pure groove

  • The best yet most underrated drummer. I just love their songs.

  • i dont agree with your statement fully... he isnt underrated, he is just shadowed by extremely overrated drummers in bands that made it to the radio. joey jordison, for instance.

Portnoy is by far a superior drummer to who people think are "the best", he just isnt known like those other drummers. Dream Theater had 1 big song many years ago, and thankfully have stayed on the downlow since cause most people dont deserve to listen to DT or LTE.

  • what is the sticking pattern from 3.23 onwards?

  • the sticking pattern is R (snare), L (1st tom), L (2nd Tom), R (floor tom), kick, kick. and that 4 times ;) understood?

  • sorry dude i actually think it is R (snare), L (1st tom), R (Floor Tom), L (2nd tom), kick, kick

kinda tricky to get the tom sounds right at that speed ;)

  • lol hmm so its either a double stroke or single stroke. ok i get it now, thanks! yeah its difficult to do it, but this guy's mike portnoy man!

  • referring to the 9/8 jungle beat :)

  • and to the 7/8 8/8 7/8 10/8 part in 1:41 ^^

it is really fun to play =D

  • I love this part so much

  • Duude he has like the perfect snare sound O.O

  • surprised?

  • Not really xD Its Portnoy, what else would I expect? Nothing short of perfection that's what ^_^

  • Technically "he" doesn't make the perfect snare sound, whoever mixed and mastered his drums does :P

I'll agree with what you mean, and feel free to ignore my pedantry. It's a very sexy snare sound!

  • i just love the smooth change from triplets to normal notes at 0:51. it's so subtle and yet so obvious^^

  • dude stfu

  • dude what the dick is your problem?

  • The beginning parts with the lower floor toms sounds like the Halo theme song.. sortof. :P

  • Dude they are dubed in. iI have this dvd and thats what Mike sed!!!

  • Who's playing the very high toms during 1:53 - 2:07? It's not Mike...

  • If you listen to the original recording, you can hear it better rather than in this video.

  • Yeah its him, watch closely again..

  • suuuu madre.........

  • nice fuckin acordeon.

  • I WANT THIS SONG!!! dammit, can't find it anywhere. I remember hearing it once in pandora and i fell in love with it

  • another dimension...

  • 1999 Liquid Tension Experiment Volume II - Another Dimension! (4th track on the cd...)

Just buy the cd off amazon or what ever, one of the best progressive albums EVER!

  • i think this video got me into drumming... years ago.. thanks MP!

  • The All Powerfull Portnoy...

  • best drummer :D

  • i love DT & LTE my favourite bands!!!

    P.D. Prog metal rules!!!!!

  • epic song

    epic drumer

    just epic music

  • It's Dream Theater, there's nothing that isn't epic about it

  • not if you like your music with cream. =P you fag.

  • It´s not Dream Theater you ass,it´s LTE. Read up before u speak up. I hate ignorant people!

  • well...its not like they seperate it really strict. They often play LTE-Songs at DT-concerts. Some LTE-stuff is even part of the Instrumedöey ^^

  • LOVING the nicko mcbrain ride groove at 0.36

  • i love thsoe odd time signatures he does randomly in a song.

  • rofl..Another Dimension

  • to get this straight

    is he from dream theatre

  • John Petrucci, Tony Levin, Jordan Rudess, Mike Portnoy

  • Okay, no.

Portnoy is a founding member of Dream Theater, along with Myung and Petrucci. Liquid Tension Experiment was a side project of his in '97, and it included Tony Levin, Jordan Rudess, John Petrucci, and himself.

  • Mike, Gavin, Virgil, Neil P, Danney C

  • yeah this time signatures are truly odd as hell ;)

  • I really need to get this music, its amazin!!

  • But Mike being the best, much better than Gavin

  • Mike you FUCKING ROCK!!!!!!

  • The number1

  • that end fill is sick

  • Comment removed

  • I prefer Gavin Harrison

  • They both are amazing remeber Mike took Neil Pert's work ahead to a whole new level and inspired a new generation of experimental/technical/prog drummers that included Gavin Harrison and Thomas Lang. They all are fantastic.

  • Gavin is older than Mike!

However.. we are talking about gods of drums!

  • That's news to me man but still man exactly both are gods of drums.

  • Actually, Mike is older than Gavin by two years. And...you don't have to be older/younger etc. to be influenced by other drummers. Point is, they are both great at what they do...gavin has a much groovier and lighter sense of direction, whereas mike is waay more rock in his blood. Both are great.

  • Sure.. (However Wiki says Gavin is older than mike by 4 years). Good afternoon

  • Making shit up is lame, Wiki doesn't say Gavin's age.

However, I found that Gavin Harrison's date of birth is December 27, 1970, while Portnoy's is April 20, 1967.

Portnoy is 3 years older than Gavin.

Porcupine Tree was formed in 1987.

Dream Theater was formed in 1985.

Dream Theater is 2 years older than Porcupine Tree.

So, if there's actually some influences between the two of them, Gavin would be influenced by Portnoy, not the other way around.

    Good night.
