I might add Paul Revers ride by David Hatchet Fischer is an excellent account of the events that transpired on both days, The 18th and 19th of April. The RWVA is dedicated to keeping the memory of these events alive through the Project Appleseed.
A tidbit of info about Revere- His father and him were silversmiths, and very well known ones at that- hence the British soldier recognizeing his name.
And if anyone has one of his or his fathers silver spoons. KEEP that darn thing! I saw one on TV go at a pawn shop for 10K +.!!! Good golly!
And some of the Colonists were not on the 13 colonies side. Those were Loyalists or Tories. The people that were on the 13 colonies side were Patriots.
infact there were actually loyalist colonial militias out there. I do believe if my mind serves me correctly that the amount of colonists who actively engaged the British never amounted to more than 3% . whom were supported by a following 10%. the rest were either neutral, or supported the British.
And yes its seems to me as this is fairly accurate representation of the factual ride. not the childerns poem. Theres a .org website dedicated specifically to his ride.
The part at 5:57 was when Paul Revere was still on his horse and they stopped Revere. Revere did tell the regulars his name but then he ran off on his horse. But i'm not sure if they did take him off his horse and they tried to murder him.....
This video is historically inaccurate. Paul Revere was he who warned the – the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms by reading those bills and ah, making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were gonna be secure and we were gonna be free.
@esperanza31288 that is a blasphemy of history. he was not 'reading those bills'. I'm fairly certein he was 'ringing those bells', to be more historically accurate.
Absolute RUBBISH-this is total FANTASY ! AT LEAST 15 riders were sent out and DID NOT call out "The Regulars(or Redcoats) are coming" since there were many 'Royalist supporters on their routes"
I suggest anyone interested in FACT should go and study REAL historical accounts not the ones made up after the poem.
Paul Revere was an idiot and a COWARD and was dismissed from the Army - only escaping courts Marshall for cowardice for political and financial reasons.
@superswainguy Hmmm but did you know he even STOLE that ? Check it out !
"Documentation has come to light over the years indicating that Revere copied engraver Henry Pelham's drawings of the Massacre, produced his own engraving, and three weeks after the occurrence was advertising his prints for sale in Boston's newspapers"
So add fraud to the list - history is history no matter how unpalatable.
@SquireDonCristobal I did know that he stole the basic etching, yes. But can you tell me who Henry Pelham is? Or was? Revere had money and a dedication to the revolution, the publications of the Boston Massacre and all of the other propaganda news letters he delivered across the country side were all really quite important. He may have just been a stupid groupie, but he still did a fair bit. I agree the poem does over herald him, though.
@superswainguy Pelham was a artist who showed his original to Revere and was intending to sell copies. Revere went straight back and made his copies getting them on sale much faster than the trusting and unsuspecting Pelham who hoped to earn from them.
Take a look at the websit 'American History' by Suite 101-try search on - Henry Pelham Revere.
Far from contributing financially to the US revolution - he TOOK more than he gave and demanded high fees for military action at which he was useless.
@superswainguy "Pelham also wrote a note of outrage to Revere for his “dishonorable Actions.” Creating the image had cost Pelham time and money, and he had hoped to make a good profit from the sale of the images. Pelham complained that Revere had deprived him “not only of any proposed advantage but even of the expense I have been at, as truly as if You had plundered me on the Highway
@superswainguy Revere—without giving the Pelham credit or even getting his permission—made an engraving based on Pelham's work, establishing the picture as the defining image of the event. This engraving, inaccurate and provocative, showed a neat row of soldiers firing in a volley on command into a well-heeled cluster of townsmen.Later evidence indicated that no officer gave an order to fire and before any shots were. At least one soldier was attacked by a man with a club - early FOX news eh?
@superswainguy Sorry its been a while since I replied but thought you may find Bernard Cornwell's latest book an interesting read with regard to Paul Revere - The Fort which while being a fictional novel is based on fact. It deals with America's worst ever naval disaster which took place in Penobscot Bay in 1779 and involved Revere. I dont usually accept fiction as fact but I do know that Cornwell does his homework and checked out the true history which confirms the character of Revere.
@SquireDonCristobal I would actually be quite interested in checking that out. I've finished my assignment on Revere now anyway so I don't have to convince myself he was an American hero. I mean, the guy did some stuff for sure, but not enough to get the credit he got. History is difficult like that though, so many people are overlooked and forgotten and yet there are so many Paul Revere's out there it's rather unfortunate.
@superswainguy A very good book is "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong " by James W. Loewen is an excellent book which corrects the myths of US history and deals purely with facts. It sounds like the book your looking for. It knocks a few 'traditional' heroes and gives some credit where it should have been given. Good reading
Certainlt 'The Fort' by Bernard Cornwell' got me interest enough to check the myths around Revere.
Wake up and be a Free Man or Liberty Dies Tonight......my favorite line that we are reliving today and i guess if you think of it have been since then....
actually, dawes and revere made it to lexington and delivered the message, they continued onto concord where the colonial militia's weapons were stored, also sam prescott joined them after making it to lexington. all three were stopped by a british roadblock. prescott and dawes made an escape, but dawes fell off his horse and did not make it to concord, revere was marched back to lexington at gunpoint
Very impressive! I used this as a source for my report. It helps to see it rather than reading it over and over. Great job! I didn't mind the language, either. people make such a big deal out of things.
Great video! We study this in our third grade. I understand that swearing probably was said considering the circumstances. However, because of the language, I will not be able to show this to my Christian school class. I am very careful with what I show and read in class, because I cannot go against our school handbook. Yes, some parents may allow swearing in their home but that is their choice.
Did the swearing REally need to be included? The video would've still been great without it.
Well Mr. athome4now... keep showing accommodating versions of history to your kids. You sure will educate the sheep needed for the future, instead of men with an understanding of how this world is and how these brave men die for freedom!
Swearing is necessary for freedom? In order not to be "sheeple", our kids have to know how to swear? Swearing makes all the difference? I'm GREAT with historically accurate accounts, but I WILL NOT subject my kids to coarse language. Too bad, I was excited when I saw this...
