I was diagnosed as an adult,at age 19 and I went my whole entire life without a diagnosis, and even treatment b/c the damn school didn't even care. I'm autistic, I was labeled "learning disabled" a long time ago, back in the days when there wasn't a lot of resources for the type of kid I was. That's why the schools are the way they are, they're overreacting to compensate for letting people like me fall through the cracks decades ago. In the 80's, when I could of benefited from treatment, connies like Savage would of simply called a person like me weak. But now that we know more about it all of a sudden he somehow cares. My nephew is supposed to be "autistic" but he knows right from wrong. He watches wrestling plays wrestling games and does wrestling moves on mn his little brother. My brother who is white and my sister in law who is half black does not do a thing. They do not do homework nothing. Just wrestling. I'm an ABA therapist. I have had many clients. These clients ranged from high functioning to low functioning individuals. There is a good range in age (due to privacy issues, I can't go into more detail). Savage is dead wrong. What many people don't realize is that there is a high co morbidity rate of autism and other disorders. Thus, it's not necessarily being over diagnosed if other disorders are present. As for big money in autism, agencies aren't exactly rolling in tons of cash.

When my son was 2 he started to display behaviors and traits that were not the norm. It took us 3 years to get a dx of autism. That was almost 10 years ago.
Today, there are so many kids just getting a dx within literally weeks. It should never happen that fast. It should be a longer process that rules out several other issues that could be similar to autism (like parenting problems, stress, speech issues, brain injury, etc.). Schools should not be able to label any child, period.
It's not uncommon for the school district to ensure that a child suffering from Autism gets placed into a special ed class. This is for the child's sake, to ensure that they recieved tailored education that will benefit them. Some children with Autism can struggle in a normal school enviornment. Michael Savage seems to look for negatives, by automatically claiming that such a service bankrupts the education system.
Think about it...How high does the percentage of medicated children need to be in order for you to start questioning the diagnosis. I took Ritalin as a kid and so did lots of other normal kids. When are we going to realize that most of these "mental disorders" are idiosyncrasies. Instead of teaching different personality types in different ways, they medicate all the different personality types and put them all in one classroom.
I have had bipolar I disorder since I was 4 or 5 and I get manic moods and they are doing the same thing with bipolar disorder. I had to have meetings every month under an IEP for it and was in AP classes and had straight A's and I never needed an IEP but they did that for money.

I don't believe those with higher functioning autism have it worse than those who can't talk. My son knows he can't talk or use sign language, it frustrates him to the point of punching and biting himself because he wants to ask to eat or use the toilet but can't make his body do what he wants it to. This will affect him more as he gets older and kids call him "retard" or pick on him because he goes to a special school, or has to wear diapers. Severe autism sucks!

A lady I chatted with suspected herself of being on the spectrum and a Psychiatrist wanted to diagnose her ADHD without an exact examination and this lady was like, no diagnosis unless I am examined clearly, she was diagnosed schizoid personality disorder when finally examined clearly

I have a friend that has Autism to the point where it is obvious and can still drive and work and wants no Government assistance but needs it. He is depressed alot because of not only the stigma but the fact that he is 25 and never had a girlfriend or much of a social life.

Anyone care to comment on what they consider a misdiagnosed case might look like. Where I come from, it's a long drawn out procedure, done by a whole series of professionals, a whole team in fact. My son was diagnosed a year and a half ago, with ASD.
It would be more effective to do investigative reporting on actual examples of of misdiagnosed autism instead of venting out like a crabby old man....but Savage's audience would rather hear him vent out like a crabby old man than find out the real story.
this is interesting, in the UK autism does not bring in extra money etc. so this issue is not a problem. We however do have an increasing amount of children diagnosed. It would worry me if ASD could be used to get money.

ADHD comes under the Autism umbrella. Kids sometimes have ADHD as an extension to Autism. My son was diagnosed with ADHD as an extension to his Autism. ADHD does NOT come under the autism umbrella. ADHD is *believed* to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. But autism is caused by permanently damaged brain circuitry that can actually be seen on an MRI brain scan. Just because your kid is a higher functioning autistic who is easier to control, doesn't mean other people are bad parents. It just means your kid's brain circuitry isn't as badly damaged. Thanks for the comments. For the record though, I believe that Autism and ADHD are very real. I just think that the autism spectrum is growing to a point where there are kids being diagnosed with autism or ADHD as an excuse for their bad behaviour. I think this in turn affects genuine Autistic sufferers who can't get the limited resources because of these misdiagnosis. It also gives kids excuses for behaving bad. Oh and your not dumb, it was an easy mistake to make.
I do want to clear one thing up though, and I'm being serious here. ADHD isn't a type of autism. Whoever told you that is wrong. I'm not an expert, but that is one thing I do know.

This is true. When I was accused of DUI an charged even though I was below the legal limit (based on obsebation of the officer). My lawyer wanted me to go to the store and get diagnosed with autism. I didn't go along with that and the charges were dropped.
Well I'm a parent of an Autistic child && let me say it wasn't easy getting him diagnosed. It takes so much study && interventions && a team of doctors to diagnose my child. Autism isn't diagnosed over one day.

I'm autistic, I was labeled "learning disabled" a long time ago, back in the days when there wasn't a lot of resources for the type of kid I was. That's why the schools are the way they are, they're overreacting to compensate for letting people like me fall through the cracks decades ago. In the 80's, when I could of benefited from treatment, connies like Savage would of simply called a person like me weak. But now that we know more about it all of a sudden he somehow cares. What a fake!

My nephew is supposed to be "autistic" but he knows right from wrong. He watches wrestling plays wrestling games and does wrestling moves on mn his little brother. My brother who is white and my sister in law who is half black does not do a thing. They do not do homework nothing. Just wrestling. I'm an ABA therapist. I have had many clients. These clients ranged from high functioning to low functioning individuals. There is a good range in age (due to privacy issues, I can't go into more detail). Savage is dead wrong. What many people don't realize is that there is a high co morbidity rate of autism and other disorders. Thus, it's not necessarily being over diagnosed if other disorders are present. As for big money in autism, agencies aren't exactly rolling in tons of cash.

When my son was 2 he started to display behaviors and traits that were not the norm. It took us 3 years to get a dx of autism. That was almost 10 years ago.
Today, there are so many kids just getting a dx within literally weeks. It should never happen that fast. It should be a longer process that rules out several other issues that could be similar to autism (like parenting problems, stress, speech issues, brain injury, etc.). Schools should not be able to label any child, period.

It's not uncommon for the school district to ensure that a child suffering from Autism gets placed into a special ed class. This is for the child's sake, to ensure that they recieved tailored education that will benefit them. Some children with Autism can struggle in a normal school enviornment. Michael Savage seems to look for negatives, by automatically claiming that such a service bankrupts the education system.

Think about it...How high does the percentage of medicated children need to be in order for you to start questioning the diagnosis. I took Ritalin as a kid and so did lots of other normal kids. When are we going to realize that most of these "mental disorders" are idiosyncrasies. Instead of teaching different personality types in different ways, they medicate all the different personality types and put them all in one classroom.

I have had bipolar I disorder since I was 4 or 5 and I get manic moods and they are doing the same thing with bipolar disorder. I had to have meetings every month under an IEP for it and was in AP classes and had straight A's and I never needed an IEP but they did that for money.
It seems like every brat who throws tantrums is "bipolar"... I work and go to college for my 2nd degree because my first career bombed and I have no idea why people who are drama queens get SSI for bipolar now.

I don't believe those with higher functioning autism have it worse than those who can't talk. My son knows he can't talk or use sign language, it frustrates him to the point of punching and biting himself because he wants to ask to eat or use the toilet but can't make his body do what he wants it to. This will affect him more as he gets older and kids call him "retard" or pick on him because he goes to a special school, or has to wear diapers. Severe autism sucks!

I am autistic myself but doing alright in spite of it, it does irk me when persons who really have autism, have trouble getting diagnosed while those who who are not on the spectrum get labeled this anyways.
A lady I chatted with suspected herself of being on the spectrum and a Psychiatrist wanted to diagnose her ADHD without an exact examination and this lady was like, no diagnosis unless I am examined clearly, she was diagnosed schizoid personality disorder when finally examined clearly

I have a friend that has Autism to the point where it is obvious and can still drive and work and wants no Government assistance but needs it. He is depressed alot because of not only the stigma but the fact that he is 25 and never had a girlfriend or much of a social life.
Theyre are different levels of Autism but those who are higher functioning probably suffer more then those who can't even talk, So I think Michael Savage could have worded it a little better.

ADHD comes under the Autism umbrella. Kids sometimes have ADHD as an extension to Autism. My son was diagnosed with ADHD as an extension to his Autism. I agree with Savage. people rip the backside out of Autism. I've seen it with my own eyes. My kid is hyper with ADHD. He doesn't walk around slapping kids like other so called sufferers, and have me in the back ground making excuses for his bad behavior. Autism is real, but so are parents who can't control their kids and use autism as an excuse.

ADHD does NOT come under the autism umbrella. ADHD is *believed* to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. But autism is caused by permanently damaged brain circuitry that can actually be seen on an MRI brain scan. Just because your kid is a higher functioning autistic who is easier to control, doesn't mean other people are bad parents. It just means your kid's brain circuitry isn't as badly damaged. Thanks for the comments. For the record though, I believe that Autism and ADHD are very real. I just think that the autism spectrum is growing to a point where there are kids being diagnosed with autism or ADHD as an excuse for their bad behaviour. I think this in turn affects genuine Autistic sufferers who can't get the limited resources because of these misdiagnosis. It also gives kids excuses for behaving bad. Oh and your not dumb, it was an easy mistake to make.

I also want to say that you are right about holding autistics accountable for their actions. I wasn't lying when I said I had Aspergers. True, I may be immature sometimes, but I do know right from wrong. Violent autistics should be locked up just like anyone else. It's not right that your government overlooks those problems.

One last thing. I used to live in a bad area where yobs wrecked the place. They used to torture people, sometimes the elderly and genuinely cause havoc.Some parents just sat back and said "It's not his fault, he has ADHD or Autism" and done nothing about it. What!!!! We'll see if you opinion changes if someone tortured a vulnerable member of your family and comes off with "Oh he can't help it, it's his condition"

This is true. When I was accused of DUI an charged even though I was below the legal limit (based on obsebation of the officer). My lawyer wanted me to go to the store and get diagnosed with autism. I didn't go along with that and the charges were dropped.

Well I'm a parent of an Autistic child && let me say it wasn't easy getting him diagnosed. It takes so much study && interventions && a team of doctors to diagnose my child. Autism isn't diagnosed over one day.

I am more than aware that there are unethical people out there who fake things to get away with any number of other things. If you hid behind something like this to get away with some kind of crime then you are the true unethical individual. And just because your ONE attorney backed this up doesn't mean every doctor in the nation does. Yours is just one account of the "bad seeds" out there. That doesn't make it common for Autism alone either.

You don't seem to realize that parents aren't getting label for their children so they don't get the help they need. A 'stigma' of asd is not going to ruin their life. It's people like you that scare parents out of seeking help for their child. You don't grow out of ASD and if you don't get help it doesn't get any better.

My 3 yr old son has autism and I think he is the most perfect thing on earth. You use the terms, but you don't speak like an autistic person.
